Liftmaster Garage Door Opener 1265LM closes all opens up again

Hi

I'm wondering if somebody out there can help me with a perplexing issue I have with my Liftmaster 1265LM , I have some tech ability but Im no expert on this ,it all started with one day the garage door quit opening at all you would just hear a clicking sound like a relay, I checked the back of the unit it was flashing 5 times repeatly, out of the manual- 5 FLASHES - Motor overheated or possible RPM sensor failure. Unplug to reset.

Symptom: Motor has over heated; the motor unit does not operate or trolley is stuck on stop bolt = Motor unit hums briefly; RPM Sensor = Short travel 6-8 inches. - Unplug unit to reset. Try to operate motor unit, check diagnostic code. - If it is still flashing 5 times and motor unit moves 6-8 inches, replace RPM sensor. - If motor unit doesn't operate, motor unit is overheated. Wait 30 minutes and retry. If motor unit still will not operate, replace logic board

I read on the manual this is the rpm sensor most likely first then the logic board 2nd, so i installed the new rpm sensor 41C4398A RPM sensor assembly with new inturuptor cup,

same issue just clicking, BTW I did try to unplug the unit for a whole day to see if it would reset, same issue, now just yesterday I replaced the logic board (41A5021-I) red button ,was a C revision cross references to the newer revision board I, now finally the garage door does open all the way but when I try to close it it hit the ground and goes right back up to full open position, after tinkering countless hours of adjusting travel down and force down I still can not figure this out, then when you make the adjustment you only get I think 5 tries, then the relay click comes back on, then the 5 flashs of the led again, have to unplug the unit wait 15 mins then try again . I think the motor gets very hot when going up/down repeatily and its a saftey feature that shuts it off temporalirilly,

BTW -the interuppter cup is on all the way reseated the connetor to the rpm sensor as well, both photo eyes are on solid green and appear to be working no flickering unless you break the beam.. ?

I feel like im spinning my wheels Please Help-Thanks Very Much for your help..

This is driving me crazy and been working on this for about 4 days now, out of work and can not afford to hire a repair guy right now..Thanks Dennis

If the door hits the floor and then reverses it is traveling too far in the down direction. Here is the way it works. When the door hits the floor, the motor stalls and the interrupter cup quits spinning and the RPM sensor board quits sending a pulse to the logic board. The logic board reverses the motor and the door opens. What needs to be done is figure out why the 'down limit' is not working or if it is just out of adjustment. The easiest way to do this is remove the cover of the motor unit and watch the limit switch assembly while the door is closing. Turn the down limit several turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. This should get the door to stop short of hitting the floor. Now some tweaking will be involved to get it right. You have it right about the thermal protector. It is to protect the motor from over heating and sometimes seems a pain you know where.

Although my door is a different brand I had a very similar problem. The fix was the wire going to the beam at the floor level was intermittently loose. The light appeared green but as soon as the door started moving it would jiggle the wire just loose enough to cause an interruption. Yours does not sound exactly the same but it's worth looking at.

I moved to the house two years ago and it's been the same since. The door works fine (until now, but this seems to be an unrelated problem). The spring is there but it seems loose or disconnected. You're right, maybe it's time to call a repairman. Just look in the yellow pages?

No light coming on when you push the button is leading me to believe you have a problem in the wiring harness or still possibly a bad board. You can purchase a power tester at local hardware store for a couple bucks. I would get one of these and make sure I still have power coming into the opener at the other end of the power cord. If you pull off the cover the power cord should be coming into the unit on the back right hand side. I would check that to make sure there is power there. If there is I would follow the diagostic diagram the manufacture sent you. If your not comfortable with electricity, I don't recommend you try hardwiring anything. I can't think of any other normal, easy things to check. If I were there I would swap boards to see if anything changed. If you have access to another board of the same kind you can try that. Otherwise I would be on the phone with a tech myself if I could not visibly see anything else wrong. Good luck and let me know what you find.

If the opener was manufactured prior to 1993 it did not come with sensors. It sounds like you may have a combination of problems. I would first check the door springs to make sure one of them isn't broken. Next remove the cover off the motor unit and check the condition of the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It should be obvious if it is going bad. On the rear of the motor unit you will find a couple controls. The up and down force adjustments. Increase both of these about 1/4 turn and see if there is any improvement. The normal life of these units is 10 years so you may have a losing cause here. (There are always exceptions though).

First make sure there is nothing between the bottom of the door and the floor. If not, your door is evidently expecting to travel downward further to fully close. There is a 'down limit' adjustment screw on the side of the drive unit. Turn in in the direction indicated to decrease the travel in about 1/2" increments until it no longer reverses. This is also a good time to check the chain tension and security and proper operation of all associated hardware, including the neutral balance of the door when operated manually.
