I didn't get a lot this spring because of lack of space so the ones I did get got planted or potted up almost immediately. I did see today that I have some bands and a few of last years rooted cuttings that are going to need up potting soon though. But that's a good thing!

I'm way past planting out by now, but I have been getting up at dawn to work in the yard before it heats up and it's wonderful--so quiet and cool I don't even mind weeding. Besides, I feel so virtuous when I finally quit around 9:30.

I won't be planting my new bed of teas (aka the Pine Tree Garden) until the fall. I plan to prepare the bed this summer, then plant in the fall to catch the returning rains. Also, I like to let things settle down to a slow simmer in the summer after the intensity of the winter work and the spring flush. I do a bit of deadheading and pull some weeds, but summer is not my busy season outdoors. It's too darn hot.

Wow, I'm so impressed you got 3 holes dug in one morning! I have a number of roses which need planting out but the ground is so hard right now (hasn't rained for a few weeks) that I think I'll need to soak it several times before I can dig it. It really is nice to work early in the morning, before it gets too hot!

Harmonyp, you made me smile. I might have been done planting in April too, had I not clicked "Add to Cart" so many times. Just think of it as my effort to help support our rose vendors.

seil, yes, potting up IS a good thing. I find it a very relaxing thing to do and it sounds as if you do too.

rinaldo, there is something lovely about working in the early morning. I often think of Monet as the play og the sunlight changes the look of the garden--delightful!
Rosefolly, you are right about Summer being too darn hot. (I am thinking of a song from "Kiss Me Kate" that expresses the same feeling with a little more enthusiasm) Our rain is about done here too except for some roller coaster thunderstorms and the odd hurricane. A bed of teas would be so beautiful!

RabbitRabbit, I got 3 holes dug only because I was working in an area that had been previously dug. I have another section that yields up rocks to go around the water garden. Digging there often requires the help of the hose.

I love getting up around 5:30 or so, fixing the coffee and sitting on the patio while it's cool, watching it get light, there's just something serene and peaceful that time of day; it doesn't last too long, but it's my "alone" time and I treasure it!

I had Mme Pierre Oger once, it lasted a few years in my old home, it is a beautiful rose, but I would probably have to spray it if I wanted to keep it. It seems to draw blackspot easily.

I concur with early starts, somewhere between 7 am - 10 or so works well here when it starts to really warm up. We already have had some near mid 80s here though and I just dont like it. Couple years ago we had a southern style heat wave with temps into the hundreds for like 5 weeks, I keep saying I want to move south, until it gets really hot, then I remember I hate the heat just as much as the cold.. I guess no place is perfect!

Mme Pierre Oger, its one of the most unique roses to me, translucent.
