Old Troy Bilt tiller ID problem

I am trying to ID a Troy Bilt tiller and am kinda stuck. It looks to me to be a Pony, but all the info on MTD's archives for Troy Bilt machines for 1976-1982 show the Pony with 2 different controls for the tines. My tiller has only one control for the tines, they are either engaged or disengaged. There is not another handle or even a place for one by the engage lever. Could this be an earlier machine? Or just a different model? I checked the serial number, the serial number on this machine is 29134. There is no prefix as most of the info shows the serial number having. It has a 5 horse Briggs which appears to be original. The engine was painted white by the factory, with the type of carb that is mounted on top of the tank, no bowl or such. What I have read states that this was an engine available on the Pony. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

By any chance does your tiller have solid rubber tires? I have an older Trybilt tiller that has the 5hp B&S engine as you described. Mine has solid rubber tires and electric start that i don't use. Don't have the serial number handy, but can post it later. I've never been able to find a parts or maintenance manual for it.

To my knowledge, for the past 60 years, all Troy-Bilt machines were factory painted in red - from the original heavy duty Gardenway units to the current lightweight MTD models. It also seems that your serial number doesn't correspond to numbers listed in other sources. Perhaps it's a tiller made by another manufacturer?

Have troy built pony from 78 to 81 era. The motor been replace by Honda ge 160. The transmission pulley is sloppy the bolt is tight. You can move it around by hand. What is missing? A key , bearing? Serial number 118349 stamp on transmission frame. Other numbers 20512CT. 8F2 24/82. Tring to find Manuel and parts list.

Looking at the link that baymee provided, I would suspect a broken belt. Can't tell for sure, but you might have to remove the tines and pull the side plate off to see the belt. Your owner's manual should address this.

140 wt oil tighten up bearing to tight. drain refill with 85w-140 older troy bilt tiller use 140 wt back in winter I put 140 in one it choke engine down when turn on tines so had good tiller with to thick oil Drain out install 85w-140 engine could keep running allow tines turn serval minutes before start tilling alittle warmup help the belt are belts. When have plastic shim gaskets always use torque value on bolts or socket screws with locktite.

I think you ought to look for a much newer replacement engine, to replace that old and obsolete engine, for which parts are exceedingly hard to find!
