Garden hose and hose end questions

I seem to be lost in a vortex of leaking hose couplings- or rather where the hose clamps to the coupling. In my little world, I've made some custom length hoses for this and that and they all seem to develop leaks. I've used hose ends with hose clamps, hose ends w/ the plastic clamp style- even used pex type couplings and clamped them on good. After a period of weeks , they all seem to leak- never to seal again. The hoses we use are of a better grade, but not the contractor type- which may be 100% rubber, I dunno if that would help or not. Anyone have a solution here? TIA

I would get the thick brass connectors and use metal strap clamps. even with the metal strap clamps you still have to periodiclly retighten. Regardless of the type of hose they work loose. I used RTV or super glue with some sucess at the joints and on the screw threads. IMO the plastic ones arn't worth a dare.

I have repaired a few hoses due to freezing damage. I have not had leak issues with the brass end/hose clamp combo on my Gilmour hoses. I have had issues on a cheaper hose though.

I have hose troubles too. I have had really bad luck with every hose I have bought from OSH recently. The regular hoses kink horribly. The "Kink-free" hoses sprout leaks in them after just a few months. They are also stiff and hard to handle. For storage, I have one of those boxes where you turn the handle and the hose reels itself in. I also use a nozzle on the end of the hose where you can turn the nozzle to shut off the water. I think the water must build up pressure in the hose when I turn the nozzle to 'off.' Maybe that is stressing the hose fabric too much, so it develops leaks? (And it is not like we have good water pressure either). I'm taking the hose I have now back to OSH because it developed leaks after only 3 or 4 months. It is supposed to have a lifetime guarantee, so I want my money back OSH!

There should be a rubber/plastic/silicone washer in the female end of the hose. If there isn't one, or if it's not too good, which seems like the case, go to a hardware store and get a couple rubber washers. They usually come several to a package and cost a couple of bucks. It sounds like you've got pretty strong water pressure, so try not turning the spigot on full blast.

one of the best greenhouse growers i ever met.. let his plants.. on a routine basis.. wilt.. before watering again ... the theory was.. it encouraged root growth .. there is no reason you cant do the same ... just watch.. observe.. etc .. my rain barrel .. weep hose project failed.. as there was not enough HEAD PRESSURE ... to actually let the water weep out.. at the far end of the hose ... this became readily apparent.. as i tried to attach a new length ... the next step in your knowledge.. is to use actual engineered drip irrigation ... where release is predictable along the whole length ... but its not a rain barrel thing ... come to think of it.. i also ended up with mosquito larvae in the whiskey rain barrel .. that was the end of that experiment ... i plugged the spigot.. added a pump.. and had goldfish in it for a few years... IN MI ... winter and all ... [a good heater too.. lol] ken

most of the time i don't care if they leak. odds ar ewhatever i hook to the end will have a leaky washer anyway.

but what it have done before is to put silicone on teh end before pushing it in the hose. then clamp it down. never had one of those leak yet.

I have couple 1/4 inch drive torque wrench tighten them to 20 inch pounds they stay tight for me brass ones. I all most every time get new hose put male brass end on hose they seat to washer better for me.

Use Permatex No. 2 or No. 3.
