How old is too old (for an Austin rose)?

Gertrude Jekyll was my first Austin rose. I ordered her from Wayside when they first introduced the Austins, and I'm thinking that must have been at least 20 years ago. It survived years of pampering and years of neglect, with more than half the canes coming back each year. This year I don't see a single sign of life. Even more puzzling, my much younger Gertrude Jekyll appears to have been killed off, too. That one is less than five years old.

I'm wondering about the Austin life expectancy. And I'm also wondering if caterpillar damage (tent caterpillars and gypsy moths) could have contributed to their demise. I was vigilant about picking them off, but all my roses lost some foliage from them in the past couple of years.

Thanks for your input!
