Will my apple tree survive heavy storms?

Hello everyone,

We live in Los Angeles and we just bought a dwarf young apple tree last weekend.

We planted it in our backyard. And since then, we got 3 big storms, it has been raining heavily for the whole week. I noticed that some of the tiny leaves are turning yellow.

Is the apple tree dying of root rot? Will it survive?

We also have a matured avocado tree, and that area is flooded. Is that going to survive since it is more matured?

My apple trees survive Spring here every year. Sometimes it can be weeks of rain. While I can't imagine your tree is happy just being planting and all, it will survive the odd entire week of rain here and there without rotting. Trees would have never survived this long if they couldn't handle such things.

what is your soil ...

define what you mean by standing water... duration.. depth .. etc ....

define how you planted it ...

it MIGHT be water.. it might be how you treated it at planting.. and it might just be transplant shock ...

was it potted or ball and burlap? .. did you do any root surgery if the roots were circling????

transplanting .. and properly planting a fully leafed out tree is incredibly stressful to said tree ... rain.. in soil that drains SHOULD be a plus ... no matter the amount ... but if your soil is clay.. and you created a tub that holds water .. then you could have problems ... but it usually takes longer for roots to rot.. rather than diagnose stress ...

you MIGHT want to stick it back in the pot ... but wait until others have provided their thoughts .... if the pot is gone.. the nursery you got it from might have a recycle bin ....

An excerpt from "The Backyard Orchardist" by Stello Otto. M7 (also known as MVIIa) - This is often considered the ideal stock for the small semi dwarf tree, well suited to the home orchard. It has a nice open spreading growth habit and a good root system with strong anchorage when combined with all but a few scion varieties. At about 50% of standard size, it is similar in size to a peach tree and ideal for espalier or decorative cordon. M7 grows well on most soils but does best on fertile loam soils and clay soils that tend to have consistent moisture. It does require regular watering on dry sandy soils. Although susceptible to wolly aphids, it is resistant to collar rot. It does have a tendency to root sucker heavily and needs to be planted deeper than other rootstocks to reduce this problem. The book is older, but is still the best fruit tree reference I can think of.

It should survive. After you squash the worms check all the other trees to avoid same. BT works down here if you need to spray another time.
