Need help picking out woodland edge attention grabber

Near the woodland edge, I lost 1 30-40' post oak for whatever reason and 1 same size southern red oak from a lightening strike at the wood edge out back. These will be cut down shortly. This spot is directly out from the living room and very visible. I was thinking about putting a variegated something out there. I am mainly after summer interest. The spot is south facing and gets a lot of sun (8+ hours) and also on a gentle slope so there is never standing water anywhere remotely close. Also deer are a big problem out there so something deer resistant would be a plus. I am open to anything other than a juniper or similar looking conifer lol It is also about 200' away so it does have to be moderately showy.

Thanks for the advice again! My garden would look very different if it weren't you guys and gals helping me along :)

John
