Feedback Needed for Bathroom Makeover - paint, gel stain, etc.
Comments (25)Here is what it looks like now after painting it Palladian Blue (thanks, sueb20, for the correct spelling): This is a spare cabinet door I have that is a dark alder (which is quite similar to cherry): I do like this much better. This shade still has a tinge of red in it. I'm wondering if I should aim for this type of finish or something without the red undertones? Also, if I were to layer a brownish/black gel stain (like a walnut or java) would it work better to reduce the red/orange of the existing stain? Other possibility could be a mahogany, but since the existing stain has quite a bit of red/orange, perhaps that'd be too much? I'm not going to sand away the entire stain there now, just enough to get off the poly layer. The cultured granite doesn't photograph too well, but it has little greyish/black flecks in it. Usually I find a java stain too dark for my taste, but I'm curious how it would look next to the cultured granite. I don't think it works too well with the existing finish--it's too orange and shiny for me, as the same time, is it fairly good shape and I don't want to ruin it. Next task, though, is to clean the grout in the floor tile and reseal before DH and DS return so the bathroom can be used again....See Moreneed help picking paint color for princess bathroom
Comments (13)The Sweet Caroline is really pretty once it's up - I'm using it in my new baby's nursery now I liked it so much. Her room is still in progress (as is the girls' bathroom). I think it would go really in your 6-year old's room with the Betsy comforter, and it's a slightly more "mature" color so might work better with an older child. I have two girls (4 and 5 mos.) - it sounds like we're kind of doing the same thing in terms of linking their rooms. The baby has green (Sweet Caroline), 4 year old has the pink room, and the Jack-and-Jill bathroom in between is a blue-grey color (Sherwin Williams North Star - SW 6246). I did hex tiles on the floor, too, but with black accents. I decided to go a little more neutral with the bathroom since both the girls' rooms are pretty theme-y (once I finally finish them!). Aren't little girls fun?! Between decorating and buying cute clothes, though, I'm going broke, LOL. Comments (19)olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? Lastly, I had the idea of applying pieces of beveled mirror framed by black molding floor to ceiling along the back wall and continuing behind the toilet (similar to this only floor to ceiling with the exception of base molding & crown): [Traditional Bathroom[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-bathroom-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_712~s_2107) by Northbrook Architects & Building Designers Michael A. Comments (24)I agree with eld..there's a reason the middle mirror is there. Can you paint the frames while they're on the wall? I mean, without taking them off? I wouldn't know, but it's not like am a big specialist in painting. If yes-then maybe makes sense painting them first too. Logistically speaking. I still would try to at least find the wall color by the time I'm painting the mirrors...to know what I will be working with. Color of trim/your blinds will work nice; but what if you want to paint them in your wall color, just in different sheen? Will make them less prominent too. Although I suspect they are much more proportional that they seem; the color is throwing them off, because it's very different from the rest, and it makes you concentrate on it=the mirrors seem heavier than they really are. All the greiges that other people describe as perfect greiges-were too cool for me. No Elephant Breath, no Dove Wing, no Revere Pewter-they were very nice when I put them on the paper. Very greige. The moment I taped the paper to the walls-they became simply gray. And I didn't want gray. I wanted greige. Well. Long story short-The room I wanted to be greige turned out to be the room when I mixed my own custom color..:) I don't know how it's called, I named it myself. I just went warmer and warmer until I loved what I saw. I'm afraid it's trial and error. Forget how they call the color, at some point...just try shades that might work, to your eye. You'd be surprised how little resemblance some paint colors bear with their names. And I agree with eld that your mistake is an easy fix. Really. I'm stuck with a prison-cell-looking-window in one of the rooms, because my husband insisted the grids of the window should be proportional to the grids of another window:) Now he agrees with me the grids should be proportional to the window itself, but it's too late lol....See MoreJamie Webb
