Comments (9)I recently decided that I'd had enough with the consumer grade power tools and started researching this subject myself. I'd been using a mccolloch gas trimmer and a poulan pro (what's pro about it?) p446t with attachments and wanted something more. I looked at echo, tanaka, shindaiwa and stihl. I ended up getting the stihl km 90r kombisystem and now I'm wondering why I waited so long to do it. The stihl exudes quality and power and it never bogs even at part throttle because it's gotta go through 3 tanks to break in. The stihl dealer is helpful and always stocks replacement parts. Go to a big box store and try to find a replacement part. If you are truly looking for a tool that will last you for many years to come then stop looking at consumer grade stuff....See MoreMowers vs. Cars
Comments (120)Personally I think this is a really interesting discussion. I am an engineer at Honda R&D near Columbus, OH. At my location, there are over a thousand white collar workers, mostly technical. Within a hundred mile radius of me, there are a 4 Honda assembly plants, employing around 10,000 people. At other sites in the US and Canada, there are probably another 15,000 workers. Each of these plants is turning out thousands of new Hondas per day. Nearly every Honda/Acura sold in the US (by volume) is made in the US. The engines, transmissions, every major component. Furthermore, Honda actually *exports* cars from the US, something that the Big 3 can barely talk about. Sure, there are niche cars like the S2000 roadster that are 100% Japanese, but that is a tiny part of our market. I think these are pretty impressive numbers, especially if you consider that Honda is only something like the 7th largest market share in the US. Its been here since 1979, I'd wager that in those 27 years Honda has contributed significantly to Americans and their way of life. There are a lot of secure $25/hr plus full benefits jobs available in Ohio because of Honda. The US auto industry lost their way in the oil crises. They haven't been able to turn it around since then. They concentrate too much on short-sighted markets like giant fuel-guzzling SUVs. Its not that the Big 3 makes bad cars, its that they make cars that aren't in demand. Compare a Focus to a Civic. A Taurus to an Accord. Sure, those Fords might last 200k miles, but I'd much rather spend that time in a nice Accord than a hard plastic Taurus. I would rather support the thousands of American workers who build Hondas than support a few suits in Detroit and drive a Mexican Dodge. Comments (10)Why are you surprise? There are so many people keep talking about dealers and dealers. YOu are taking a chance. If you have a good dealer, it is good, but if you have a bad dealer like I had, it'll save you a lot of nerve to buy from Lowes and HD. If compare to FS55, I'll take Echo and Husky any time of the day. As I said, even Stihl commercial 4Mix has been getting mixed reviews. To be honest, if I have to put my money, I'll bet on Echo, yes even the cheap SRM210. Yes, ALL ECHO ARE TRUE COMMERCIAL, I have been on different forums reading how much people like the Echo SRM210 and HC151 trimmers that sell in HD and OSH for $219 and $279 resp. The Husqvarna 125L also has been used by commercial people with good result. Dealers might willing to service the equipment after 30 days, but there are many many occation they don't honor warranty and charge for repair. They do charge a lot, like over $120. For trimmer and blowers that is between $300 to $400, I'll take my chance with the cheaper one in box store. Or online sales if you can get it cheaper....See MoreDisappointed new Stihl Trimmer owner
Comments (22)If I am not mistaken... All Stihl equipment is required to be assembled and serviced when sold(fueled, oiled, test ran). A few people are also correct that Stihl has a 7 day return policy. This is not a dealer policy but Stihl's. If something can't be returned call Stihl. Or If something can't be returned it might not be in sellable condition. Last on my rant is box store returns. Try returning a lawn mower to home depot that has gas in it. You will be told you must take the machine out of the building because they can't have fueled machines inside the store. Some returns people will tell you to go down to the tool rental t have them drain the gas. They are never happy when told to do this. Most of the items being returned are sent to an outside company and checked over as well as repaired. This costs the HD about 40 bucks. Unit is then sold as refurbished. HD return policy on fuel equipment has changed several times over the years but was only 14 days on power equipment. After that machine is sent out for warranty repair. If it is not warranty(which it was usually not) customers will get an estimate to repair. If not repaired customer still pays the $40 estimate fee. You want best price do the small dealers a favor and shop Home Depot. You want service do yourself a favor and shop at a dealer. Also remember just because something is 3 months old does not mean it will be covered under warranty. Example fuel tank vent leaks fuel into air cleaner. Customer removes air filter to make machine work. Debris enters engine. Original tank vent was warranty. But now entire warranty is void. Example customer bought new mower did not put oil in it. Ran engine for 1 min. Realized what he did added oil. Unit runs ok for 6 months. Now engine is seized. Tech finds metal transfer on crankshaft. Customer claims he has had oil in it from min 1and changed it every 40 hours( which is true)not warranty. We fix 16-20 mowers a day. 1-2 warranty requests a day. Warranties approved by tech and mtg a month .............4 last month. I have seen returns on used units. We check them over If nothing is damaged and unit is barley used it gets returned and discounted to the next customer. I have also seen engines warrantied because a customer used straight gas. Obviously this is not the norm. But a good dealer will go the extra mile and talk to distributors or manufactures to try. I also know that the profit that a dealer makes on an fs46 is about 10- 20 dollars. Try asking a counter person for a discount on the cheapest chainsaw or trimmer....See Morelsimon77
