I just picked an old LB (late 70's) from the trash, it has good compression but will stall unless you keep pushing the primer button. Probably just needs a carb rebuild. It has a nice magnesium deck and is in good shape. I'm going to use it for a small rental property, so its retirement is over! (better than the scrap heap though)

My diesel TDI gets 1000 miles per tank ( most of the time more than that ), gets 45 MPG, has more interior volume than new Passat's and most SUV's for that matter, and currently has 200K miles on and burns no oil between its 10K mile oil changes. Oh, and I could sell it in an instant for over half what the original MSRP was...

BTW, it's really fast too, it's got about 230 lb.ft. of torque at just about 1800 RPM...

For whoever is interested. Old or exotic cars have always appealed to me. My LB being a bit different from the rest fits right in to my ecclectic garage.
Current driver is a BMW wagon, soon to be given over to the wife to replace our aging Caravan.Beater is an old Cherokee that won't die. Garage queens are Ferrari 400i and Bitter SC. Lots of sixties and seventies domestic stuff over the past years too.
I'd love to have another lumbering GM sled of the late sixties but three dollar plus gas precludes this.
A used BMW or MB will probably be my next everyday car.

My two cents on the domestic vs. foreign issue is that most domestic and asian cars are built to a price point, whereas most euro brands are made to a quality point.

Small collection of Toro Power Handles and attachments - couple of rotaries, reels, snowthrowers, tiller, edger. It was a neat concept and I think a modern version could still make sense today for certain applications.

Numerous Wheel Horse GT's and a few riders from the 60's up to early 90's.

Two Late 70's Echo string trimmers and two Echo chainsaws from same era - I think they will last forever if I can get parts.

A '39 9N Ford and two 8N's.

'87 GMC Suburban, 339,000 miles (replaced engine at 217,000 simply because I lost trust in it for trips)

'03 Avalanche 2500, 86,000 miles, been back only for warranty/recall on rear seat belt straps, tailgate cables and an AC sensor.

I went to college and attained a "Motorcycle, Marine, and Outdoor Power Products Technician" degree. While in school, I attended Skills USA (former VICA) and competed in the Outdoor Power Products Technician category. I received First Place in Regional, and State. I attended the National competition down in Kansas City. There I was awarded Third Place in the nation's graduating and competing Outdoor Power Products Technicians. I was sent down to Louisville for the National Lawn and Garden Expo for a week free of charge. I also received a Snap-On tool set, a free Briggs 5.5 Intek which I sold for $50 unused, and many other handy gadgets and gizmos.

I worked at a shop for nearly five years as a lawn and garden mechanic. After that, I worked at a golf course as the head mechanic for two years before deciding to go back to school for Aviation Maintenance.

I think I definitely belong here. You'll just have to deal with me.

As to why I hate this thread:
It was originally brought up as an investigation to whether or not there was a correlation between a person's mower choice and the vehicle they drive. It quickly became apparent that no one was keeping track or even cares -- maybe just me -- and all the posts were purely posted to brag oneself up.

I personally think this is retarded as stated twice already.

For what it's worth most of the guys here enjoy talking about mowers, cars and just about anything mechanical. I certainly do. Whether it is a discussion about what someone owns, the history of mowers with Maytag motors or how to repair a hydrostatic drive, the discussion can be worth reading. And you might learn something.

Your comment about "having to put up with you" leads me to believe you are quite young. My suggestion to you would be to lighten up and enjoy the conversation. Or just be silent if you have nothing of value to contribute.

I hadn't posted anything on this thread; but your bad manners are quite evident. If you live in crummy apartment and are scraping by that is no one's problem but yours. If other people can enjoy some success then it is probably due to hard work and making good decesions in life. If you feel resentful then that says something about you.

Another interesting correlation would be value of house versus type of mower. Do all people in $250,000 plus houses drive John Deeres, or do some have a MTD in the garage?

I've witnessed a couple with a $250,000+ home with a MTD in the garage. It's all about whatever works for them and what their needs really are.

In the town where I used to live, you could easily find MTD's in the garages of $420K houses. Reason being $420K gets you a 50 year old house with about 1,000 sq ft in a neighborhood where many people can't afford water to put on their lawns. Its an interesting comment to bring up none the less. To me it seems like it depends on how much an individual is interested in lawn care and if they are a gear head. Sometimes money makes a difference, sometimes not.

I honestly believe that a new Civic is a better car than a Cavalier. So I bought the Civic. Conversly, I also thought the Polaris ATV was better than the Honda So I bought the polaris.

I bought my Buick Regal and Honda Odyssey because they were ranked high on Consumer Reports, JD Power & Assoc., and others. I bought my Toro 20017 push mower because of Consumer Reports. I bought my John Deere LX178 because the price was right and that is all we used on the farm and have always had good luck with them.

Personally I think this is a really interesting discussion. I am an engineer at Honda R&D near Columbus, OH. At my location, there are over a thousand white collar workers, mostly technical. Within a hundred mile radius of me, there are a 4 Honda assembly plants, employing around 10,000 people. At other sites in the US and Canada, there are probably another 15,000 workers. Each of these plants is turning out thousands of new Hondas per day. Nearly every Honda/Acura sold in the US (by volume) is made in the US. The engines, transmissions, every major component. Furthermore, Honda actually *exports* cars from the US, something that the Big 3 can barely talk about. Sure, there are niche cars like the S2000 roadster that are 100% Japanese, but that is a tiny part of our market. I think these are pretty impressive numbers, especially if you consider that Honda is only something like the 7th largest market share in the US. Its been here since 1979, I'd wager that in those 27 years Honda has contributed significantly to Americans and their way of life. There are a lot of secure $25/hr plus full benefits jobs available in Ohio because of Honda.

The US auto industry lost their way in the oil crises. They haven't been able to turn it around since then. They concentrate too much on short-sighted markets like giant fuel-guzzling SUVs. Its not that the Big 3 makes bad cars, its that they make cars that aren't in demand. Compare a Focus to a Civic. A Taurus to an Accord. Sure, those Fords might last 200k miles, but I'd much rather spend that time in a nice Accord than a hard plastic Taurus.

I would rather support the thousands of American workers who build Hondas than support a few suits in Detroit and drive a Mexican Dodge.

Yes, the Honda & Toyota products are in my opinion much better designed than many of the cars coming from Ford and GM.

Honda and BMW are on the verge of introducing hydrogen fuel cell production vehicles (that is huge). It's nice to know that other countries companies are helping us move away from dependancy upon foreign oil.

I'm not seeing any patterns, and I doubt there is any correlation between a man's mowers and his cars. It would be dramatic to assume a guy who uses a 1960 Lawn-Boy might also drive a Saab 2-cycle car, but he probably drives a 1998 Ford F-250. You just can't predict it. BTW, I'd love to have a Saab 2-cycle!

Just like human beings, the car needs to dissipate heat in order to avoid overheating and exhaustion. The performance of your Mazda car is greatly dependent on your cooling system. No matter how gutsy its engine is, it can't work normally without a cooling system.
