Comments (52)Ehh I.M.O both Stihl and Shindaiwa are neck & neck "hybrid-4 is just a fancy name like 4-mix is for Stihl" they both work exactly the same. Ohh yeah and a correction I have Br600 blowers not 500 it just says magnum on the cover I thot they were 500's this whole time.. Since we've been looking at some interesting engines lately that take the road less traveled, a comment by rafe03 on this story about this hybrid engine that needs no oil in the crankcase and no oil pump either, but it operates as a 4 stroke. The fuel mix lubricates the engine like a 2 stroke. The fuel mix is drawn in through the crankcase and, by a very roundabout way, makes its way to the intake port, lubricating everything along the way. There's an animation on the Stihl site. "Cue Link" (http://www.stihl.ca/4mix/english/stihl4mix/mixprinzip.htm) And now you have whats called a 4-mix engine. Which is just basically a hybrid 2-stroke engine posing as a 4-stroke and with the power 2 back it up. Life used to be so simple, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel. Now we have 2 and 4 stroke hybrids, 6 strokes, external combustion engines ..., and turbines and electrics and hybrids....See Moredisappointed in Stihl 340

If registered you don't even need your sales slip from the purchase. The ignition system has a 5 year warranty on parts. You should have only been charged for labor. If you didn't ask for warranty the dealer may not know how old the saw is. Most people will bring up the subject and ask. Your dealer can go to the dealer info web site and look up the purchase date if it was registered and you no longer have the sales slip. In our shop, any equipment bought from us and if the owners name match's the sales record, when the work order is entered in our computer the purchase date is automatically put on the print out. You may not have bought from this dealer or he may not be on the same computer program so you need to go back to him and ask him to check Stihl's registration records to verify. If you are under the 5 year coil warranty you should get a refund on what you paid for the new coil....See MoreStihl Trimmer FS80
Comments (20)Hi Ian, On your stihl fs80 trimmer you first need to check for spark and compression. To check for compression w/o a gauge; remove the spark plug and then hold your thumb over the sparkplug hole while turning the engine over with the pull start. You should not be able keep all the pressure in the cylinder with your fingertip no matter how hard you try. Next, check for spark by putting the plug back on the wire but do not thread it in to the cylinder. Touch and hold the threaded end of the plug to the cylinder and then pull the engine over with your other hand and look for a spark at the tip. You may also be able to hear the spark if its good and hot. I hope you had some oil mixed with your gas when you had that trimmer running? If not its going to be needing a set of rings. I would also replace the fuel line going from the filter to the carb, and wash out or replace the filter. The carb jet which is closest to the cylinder is the low side, with the other as the high side. Rotate each in to the cylinder with a screwdriver while turning clockwise untill the jets seat. Next turn each jet out 1 and 1/2 turns to start. This will get the engine running. Allow the unit to warm up for a minute and adjust the low side jet clockwise by 1/8 turns for the highest idle speed. Once you have attained the high idle, back the jet out an additional 1/8 for good acceleration. Next is the high side, go to full throttle and adjust for highest speed. Again back the jet out an 1/8 turn counter clockwise from highest rpm to keep the high side from being too lean under a load. Hope this helps you sort it out. Make sure you use a quality air cooled engine oil for your fuel mix. If you have any questions please post them. Best wishes, Bob...See Morein the market for new trimmer
Comments (10)Even at the $200 price point, I think you're going to be disappointed with Cub Cadet, Ryobi, TroyBilt, and the rest. My opinion is that Echo and Stihl are the best for reasonably priced homeowner trimmers. The Echo GT-225 and Stihl FS-45 are both curved shaft machines which retail for about $175 to $200. Next level up would be Echo SRM-225 and Stihl FS-55 which are both straight shaft, gearbox models selling for about $225 to $250. The engines on both curved shaft models are identical or very similar to the straight shaft machines. The straight shaft do offer more versatility and the ability to handle brush blades and saw blades. While you might be able to get a little cheaper from a big box like Home Depot, many authorized independent dealers will match or come close to the HD price, and you will get better service. The independent will take the time to set up the machine properly and spend a few minutes with you getting you familiar. Also the independent will handle any warranty work, even if you buy from HD. They're supposed to treat HD warranty the same as their own customers, but if they are busy, who can blame them if big box warranty moves to the back of the line. Good luck with your choice....See Morebill7
