'Strike it Rich'- Does anyone grow this rose?
Comments (27)I'm incredibly late on this topic, but here's my take: I'm in my second year growing this rose in a pot, and it's probably the most eye catching rose I have. The deep bright gold contrasts the darker green foliage and red new growth beautifully. I pruned mine back pretty hard this year and it's just now blooming. It's got a small problem with blackspot and I've had to remove a lot of the foliage from the bottom of the rose, but up top it's filling out nicely. The fragrance is my biggest disappointment because I try to only grow roses with a fragrance. The advertised fragrance is a big reason I purchased this rose, yet I can't smell anything from any of the blossoms. I don't know why that is. Maybe it needs more time? Other than that, I love everything about this rose! As a side note, I grew the sport of this rose, Ch-Ching last year and all of those blossoms had a strong fragrance. Both are growing on Dr. Huey....See Morecan anyone start for me a Russell's Cottage Rose?
Comments (2)I have a rose that I'm fairly certain is Russell's Cottage Rose. I grew it from a cutting from my grandparent's garden. I recently moved and have to transplant the rose, so it shouldn't be any trouble to get a new start from it at the same time. If you are willing to take a chance that I properly identified it, I would be happy to send it to you. GK...See MoreDoes anyone grow Lioness rose?
Comments (16)Diane, your F-I-L's place sounds just my sort of garden. And how great to have been sent boxes of avocadoes! I have a lemon tree in the ground, and one in a pot. But they both have leaf miner, which I'm treating so far with neem oil, and the one in the ground had gall wasp (I think) as well. Something that made it weep, and die back. I cut it back almost to the graft a few weeks ago, and it's sent up 3 little shoots - above the graft - which have leaf miner still, but not too badly. It may still have gall wasp too. I only use the lemons for Lemon Delicious, which I have to make vegan these days. Too lazy to make lemon curd, and I'd be the only who could eat it. Though my son might sneak a little behind his girlfriend's back! The area which is available is a great deal nearer the house than the one in the ground, and I'd like a small tree there, and lemon blossom smells so wonderful. I have an avocado tree - a Reed. It's been fruiting for around 5 or 6 years, though didn't get a one last year, as a terrific rain storm knocked every last baby fruit off the tree. They're mostly rather watery. Lots this year. I live in hope. I'm not going to try another Austin. They've all BS'd terribly here. A shame. I tried lots! It's Teas and Chinas for me, and the Rigo Rosen Kordes range. The humidity is bad here, and it's worse than ever this year. It used to not get really humid till February (late Summer), but this year it started in Spring. I just drip when gardening, even before 8am. Did you have a look at the video of Lioness on Treloar's website? Magpie, that soup sounds so good. And actually just the thing for you and your family while you're unwell. I hope you're on the up and up?...See MoreDoes Anyone Grow the Texas Roses from the Antique Rose Emporiun?
Comments (24)I have STAR OF THE REPUBLIC that the ARE introduced in 1998. I had wanted EVELYN but the Brits decided to make her extinct because the rose was no longer under patent, so STAR was a substitution. I'm not sorry. The rose established itself very quickly own root and the first year gave me spring, summer, and autumn flushes with a few blooms between cycles. This was a worry of mine because I had read posts on this forum how her repeat bloom was a disappointment. Well not in my garden. The color is gorgeous too, an apricot pink blend. Flower form isn't as perfect as Evelyn but you get better foliage that is more resistant to black spot. Fragrance isn't as delicious either but is still strong and very pleasant. Another thing I like about Star of the Republic is the smooth canes. This rose is virtually thornless. I am really looking forward to seeing what it will do in the Spring. I like it so much that I'm ordering another. My growing conditions: USDA Zone 7a. We got four seasons with hot, humid summers. Raised flower bed against western side of house. Perfect soil because I basically dug a pit down 5 feet, lined with stone, and filled with loamy purchased garden soil with balanced pH (this was done back in the day when I had a young body)....See Moreberndoodle
