Bloom times will vary depending on the region so it is most helpful to find sources specific to your area. Typically your local extension office will have the most accurate information for your location as well as recommendations for the apple cultivars that will perform best for you - not all apples grow equally well in all areas. Generally there is enough overlap in bloom time so that early and midseason bloomers will work together and midseason and late will work but obviously not early and late :-)) You are always safest selecting cultivars with similar bloom periods. And some cultivars are triploids or pollen sterile and not suitable for any pollination purposes. Jonagold and Gravenstein are included in this catagory.

And I'd be leary of many resources that promote lengthy lists of self-fertile apples. Most are not and even self-fertile trees will generate better crops if cross pollination is provided. 'Fuji' is sometimes listed as "partially self-fertile" which really equates to requiring another cultivar if you hope for any reliable fruiting.

Apple orchards where I live (eastern washington) usually have a few pollinators in fuji apple blocks. If you are looking for one tree a fuji should produce apples but there won't be as many as if there was a second tree (many orchards use a red delicious as the pollinator and just cut it back to a trunk and a few nubs each year). On the other hand the apples should be bigger. If you are looking for a single tree that sets heavily, gala is probably your best choice out of common varieties.

When it comes to cross pollination in general, and Malus in particular, here's a simple rule of thumb: cross pollination provides for best fruit set. Some of the best pollinators for fruiting apples are certain crab varieties, Dolgo being one.

That being said, any Malus, fruiting or ornamental that flowers at the same time will work as a cross pollinator. Unless you happen to live in a vacuum, odds are there are pollinators near you.

As far as I am aware, the only fruiting Malus variety that is completely self-infertile is Mutsu (sp?). Nearly all are partially self fertile (also meaning partially self-infertile)...perhaps acceptable if you are merely looking for some fruit for fresh eating, as even one tree can produce far too much fruit for even a large family to eat. If you are looking to can, make large amounts of sauce, butter, etc, you may want a larger yield...but that would also mean enough trees you don't need to worry about how many to plant to ensure pollination.

Unless you happen to ordering from a place that has just about every apple variety available, don't expect them to have a complete pollination chart...why would they list a pollinator they don't carry? While you may cherish the information (in some cases, more is not always better), a company quickly learns to provide only information for those plants they actually carry.

This doesn't really answer the question, but I found this thread by searching for GoldRush apples, so I'm chiming in about that. GoldRush, according to the people who bred it, is both the daughter and great-great-granddaughter of Golden Delicious. It also has a crabapple in its ancestry, which gives it disease resistance. That doesn't tell me when it blooms, but all I know is that the Goldrush apples I got from a farmers' market were the most delicious apples I'd ever had. They were very intense, both sweet and tart, quite firm and crisp, with a bold spicy flavor. I like Granny Smith, but I liked these even more. I hear they store very well too.

Regarding pollination, what I heard is that apples and crabapples are such popular trees, unless you live in the middle of nowhere, it's quite likely that a neighbor will have a tree that's blooming at the same time, so you don't have to worry about pollination. If you do live in the middle of nowhere, this doesn't help you, so you might want to plant just one tree, but graft different varieties onto it, to ensure pollination without needing a whole lot of different trees.

I live in NM and I want to plant some fruit trees in my backyard. I would prefer Goldrush because I know of an orchard near my area that has them. They're the best apple I've ever tasted. However, I can't seem to find any pollination information. I have limited space and also plan to plant a fig tree, nectarine tree, and possibly a peach tree. Do I have to plant two varieties of each kind? Can Pixie Crunch pollinate Goldrush? This is my first time gardening since I was ten. I'm getting confused. Please help.

There's certainly nothing wrong with posting a fruit tree question in the Trees Forum, but I'd bet you would be more likely to get better answers, from people interested in that particular subject, if you asked in the Fruit and Orchards Forum.
