I'm having good luck training Dublin Bay to grow up a privacy fence. Great blooms, nice color and the foliage is pretty much bulletproof.

Dublin Bay is really nice, I agree, but you don't want red. I am in zone 9, though and can't recommend specifically for your zone.
My best repeater, and fastest initial grower, is Pearly Gates. It has large pink flowers that fade to very pale pink but the form remains good for a very long time. I can't smell well, but it is reported to be scented. It is always in bloom here. It repeats better than any of my other climbers--Joseph's Coat, Westerland, Buff Beauty (which is really nice but still newish here),and Dublin Bay. Actually, it always has blooms in large clusters.
Dream Weaver was initially in too much shade and has been moved twice since. I really can't speak to its repeat or how it does in cold winter climates. It has an amazing spring flush.

Check out Compassion. Or, Morgengruss. But Compasson is a real winner and I seem to recall that is hardy in zone 6.

Viking Queen--large pink double blooms and fragrant. My 2-year old VQ has been disease-resistant so far. It is a lovely climber.

Wow, thanks for the responses. I haven't heard of any of these roses. I'm not surprised, there are a LOT of climbers out there! The more I look the more confused I get. No wonder folks have so many roses. It's hard to make choices.

Compassion is one of the climbers I am trying this year, based on recommendations from this site, that it is fragrant, disease resistant (ADR rose) and repeats.

Oooh I love the Impressionist! And Compassion is now on my list of favorites. Wowie, that's a stunner!

I've also found there is a climbing Angel Face, one of my favorite roses. So many roses, so little space...

I'm also finding if a nursery has one they don't have the others. Sigh... I found a place www.directgardening.com that has Angel Face for only $4.95. That can't be right - not for a good sturdy rose. And www.kellynurseries.com has it for only $6.95. Nice prices but maybe too nice.

You might want to consider disease resistance as well. My experience with cl.Angel Face was that it was a black spot magnet and it didn't survive in my no spray garden. If you are willing to spray fungicides, then it won't be a problem. There are many great roses suggested here: New Dawn or Awakening, Viking Queen, Autumn Sunset, Penny Lane (a lovely rose), Westerland, Ginger Syllabub are all fairly disease resistant without spray and nicely scented as well and good repeat bloomers. The new Kordes climbers are also supposed to be very disease rsistant and I am trying some this year.

Ooh, pretty -- thanks for the pictures. Now I have some new ones to look over. I adore Angel Face, she's my favorite rose, but I lost two bushes here already so maybe this isn't the best location for her.

New Dawn worries me because I planted two that were "supposed" to be New Dawn but were not and turned into flesh eating monsters that I just spent the weekend shovel pruning.

I will go and research the others. I know I looked at them this weekend, but they are all starting to blend together in my head.

I could put in one more if I found one that is shade tolerant. It will get just a bit less sun than the others, so it's not like deep or even medium shade. Unfortunately mine don't get early morning sun as I live on the west side of a small mountain.

Well, but New Dawn is a flesh eating monster! :-)

One of the crosses one bears in regards to growin that rose is dealing with its vigor and its thorns. If you like an "antique rose" look and you liked the color of New Dawn's flowers, you might want to look into Awakening. It's a New Dawn sport that definitely reblooms once it's settled in (that can take a few years), but has something like twice as many petals as New Dawn and Dr. Van Fleet do (New Dawn is a repeat blooming sport of Dr. Van Fleet, which looks just like New Dawn, but only blooms once a year).

Kellynurseries is an affiliate of Directgardening.com. Thye also affiliates with a few companies thta I would not order from. Warning sign that neither of them is listed at gardenwatchdog.

I would stick to a reputable rose nursery. My Compassion came from Pickering and it was a great plant and healthy.

If you like the look of the Impressionist, check out the new apricot colored Aloha by Kordes. I don't know if Palatine still has it and if they still ship but I would check out these two vendors in Canada. Not only because they are my favorite vendors, LOL, but because their use the rootstock that is probably the best in your zone.

Crepuscule is a good repeat bloomer for me as is my Aloha [pink] - its an older one and always in bloom, but it forms more of a tall shrub than a climber, but maybe thats just the way I have it pruned. New for me this year are Dublin Bay, have heard very good things about, and I love my Pearly Gates. Parade is another good one, Allister Stella Gray, Royal Sunset and I love Peach Silk and Kiss of Desire.

Oooh more possibilities. I got back a sizeable tax refund and am trying to be responsible. My old abused Shih tzu from a puppy mill has to have an eye removed because of untreated glaucoma and that's going to be over a thousand! Her "good eye" cost us $250 the other because her daughter was playing with mom and poked her in it (she arrived here pregnant at 13! :( ) Hubby is still out of work...sigh. Gardening for me is therapy and I've bought quite a few roses this year. My depression pretty much killed a lot of them over the last couple of years...double sigh...

I want to put at least one climber at the end of the deck so I can enjoy them close up. I'd love one that is VERY fragrant, gets at least 12' tall as our deck is raised and blooms all summer and is really bushy, color is not a concern as it will be all by its little self. I'm going to do some more research.

Jane, a lot of people here seem to like Darlow's Enigma for a situation like you're describing. Put the name into the search function here and you'll find lots of references to it for you to evaluate.

i agree completely with some of the others on here- if you can find one, go with Viking Queen on its own roots. i've had mine for 4 years and it is by far the healthiest in my garden of almost 40 roses. it has thrived on three yaers of neglect until i actually learned how to take care of it. it takes a couple of years to establish but it is virtually the perfect rose. it has it all.when mine is in full bloom it belongs in a magazine. BTW- i don't even have to spray it while all of my others get sprayed.

I am not sure Crepuscule is a good recommendation for zone 6.
