Are there varieties of coreopsis that are annual?

Last year I planted two masses of coreopsis in the same bed about 10 feet apart. Both of them did absolutely fantastic all summer. One of these was a yellow (sunburst type) variety and the other was a beautiful dark red but the flowers on each were identical in size/shape. Anyhow, the yellow variety is well on its way to coming back this spring and seems to have spread quite a bit. But there are absoluely no signs of life from any of the red coreopsis. Is it possible that this was an annual? I sware the tag said perennial but I don't remember exactly. I had never seen red coreopsis before and I just loved it so I'm a little bummed its not coming back. Any thoughts? By the way, we have had screwy weather but ALL my perennials have at least started poking out of the ground. Thanks for any advice/info. Lyn

Yes, there are annual coreopsis -- one that I've grown is Plains Coreopsis, which is medium tall and airy. I'll put a link below to a Google image search for annual coreopsis, and you'll see a bunch of examples. Also, some perennial varieties are more fussy than others. I grew pink Coreopsis rosea in California just fine, and it's supposed to be hardy in my current climate, but it didn't come back for me here.

I grow lots of different annual coreopsis and like them better than the perennial I have grown because at least they dont get your hopes up about comming back -although they do reseed a bit. What is up with the zone recommendations of the perennial types? In my experience they should be in the category of "what ever zone we feel like" (said in brattiest voice). Mahogany midget is a very nice annual variety.

Dracopsis Amplexicaulis - clasping coneflower I kinda thought they'd be okay now. Are you talking about Rudbeckia hirta Gloriosa Daisy which is a hardy annual, bi and P depending on location? You should be fine planting Moonbeam in early fall, just make sure it is in a somewhat dryish spot if you garden in clay, perhaps a little high, and not somewhere where the melting snow runs off. I have two large clumps, one in a regular mixed perennial bed & the other with daylilies. The first clump is over ten years old. I find that Moonbeam likes rich soils, but needs to be dry in order to winter well in the cold here. It also needs to be rejuvenated every 3 years or so as it seems that its long bloom seems to deplete the soil somewhat. (I lift them, split them up a bit, replenish the soil, & replant them in the same spot, or as I did once, use some to start another clump elsewhere). Moonbeam does get a late start for me in spring & it is easy to mistake it for grass or weeds, so mark it well. I also tried Baby Sun & Tequila Sunrise (a variegated variety) late last summer and they both wintered over well in a raised bed & have bloomed heavily for me this year as they did in their first year. Creme Brule was planted last year in the spring between some established daylilies & wintered over, but it is still too new to tell if it will be a long lasting perennial. I'd also wait till next spring to plant most other varieties of Coreopsis. Early Sunrise has wintered over for a couple of years in my garden, but its survival/return is always iffy here. IME, if you plant 3 to 5 plants, one or two won't return the first year, several will live a couple years and one, if you're lucky, will persist for 4 or 5 years. They do bloom for a long time, with larger blooms than the others I mentioned, so it's a tradeoff, depends what you want. I only tried Zagreb one time. I fall planted. It returned but never flourished, seemed to be stunted, perhaps from planting late & I finally removed it after a few years. Other gardeners I know have had no problems with it at all. As someone said, the really pretty newer varieties of pink coreopsis are annuals here. However, I have had some luck with rosea. It is a spreader, doesn't really clump for me, & unlike most coreopsis it prefers consistently moist soil. It seems to like the moist lower edges of my daylily bed. Be warned, however, it is a pale bluish pink which does not go well with peachy pinks. I have it planted with Cerise Queen Yarrow (behind on higher drier ground) around some small orchid daylilies (Siloam David Kirchhoff) at the front of the bed. A very pretty combo when it works - the dl sometimes bloom too early, while both the CQ yarrow and C. rosea are mid to late summer bloomers for me. Ah well...:~) that's gardening!

Well this is most disappointing. I did see some pics on google that looked exactly like what I planted and they are listed as zone 7-9 which isn't even close to me. I feel like I got scammed. The nursery had them in with the perennials when I bought them (and I bought a lot of them). Perenniel in zone 7 is completely useless to me! UGH! Jackied...I had no idea they were that fussy about coming back (even when actually a perenniel in your zone). I was under the impression that coreopsis was invincible. At least my yellow clump came back. I really liked them because they flowered all season and let me abuse them. Thanks for the help!

The only coreopsis that has never died out for me is Zagreb, yellow thread leaf coreopsis.

The red coreopsis you have/had is probably 'Limerock Ruby' - when it first was distributed (three years ago maybe?) it was thought to be more hardy than it actually is. I think it's really only hardy to zone 7. So it's a perennial for some people, but not those of us in zone 5 or 6.

Interesting to know that others have had problems with coreopsis coming back. I've had a nearly perfect record with C. grandiflora, pretty good luck with C. verticillata Moonbeam and OK luck with Zagreb (some didn't come back), but I was sorely disappointed that C. rosea didn't come back.

I'm in zone 6, and somewhere I saw that C. rosea was hardy to zone 5. In my former zone 9 garden, it became a vigorously spreading tall groundcover. I loved that plant! Any hints for how to get it growing well here in Utah? Maybe it got too dry or too wet that winter? It's hard to tell what went wrong.

C rosea is hardy in zone 5, at least it has been for me. It does show up quite late in the spring. It also likes a bit more moisture than most coreopsis. Mine (in a bed off the patio) likes to move to the patio runoff area. It has never gotten thick enough for me to be a groundcover, but it does grow prettily trailing around & among other perennials.

If it was an annual Coreopsis keep your eye out for self-sown seedlings...at least here anyways they are popping up :D
