I need to make my front door look floral.

Hello!

I'm a complete beginner to gardening, but l'd like to bring some floral beauty outside my door. I've attached a picture. All ideas welcome, please! This is my first time, so l'm having trouble being creative because I want it to look beautiful.

(1) What sort of potting should I use to make it aesthetically pleasing? I'm renting, so I won't be able
(2) Where should my pots/plants be placed?
What are some easy (for a beginner) but
GORGEOUS flowers I can get from the garden centre this weekend to plant here? By the way, I'm in the United Kingdom and this door is north-east facing.

Any other ideas to make my entrance look prettier?

I'd do a grouping of 3-5 pots of different sizes and arranged to the left of the front door. It looks best if the pots are similar in color but they do not have to be identical and should be in a range of sizes or shapes but none too small or wee. They just won't show up :-)

As to what to plant, describe the situation and its aspect to the garden center staff and they will assist you in plant selection. Since it is NE facing, maybe impatiens or begonias or fuchsias.

Be aware that anything grown in a container will need regular attention with watering and fertilizing.

did you get florals permission? .. i cant really see here standing there all summer long.... lol ...ken

ps: always include a big city location.. so we can hone in on appropriate plants for your area... looks like britain to me.. but what do i know...

I guess I could have one custom made but I know they make such a thing because we had one in our last house. We bought a metal cabinet that came with a thin plastic or metal door. Our cabinet maker then made a door for it and the installer attached it. I just don't know where to buy one now for a do it yourself project. Our GC ordered the last one and I don't even know how much it cost since we built that house back in the days before "cost plus' contracts and such. We don't live in the same city as before so I can't even try to get one where we did last time. Surely I'm not the only person who has put a cabinet door on a medicine cabinet that matches the rest of the cabinetry in the room...Anyone else have any leads??? Thanks.

Here is a long-running thread on Therma Tru doors. We have one 5 year old TT, and really like it. Tried to get a new one last year through a lumber yard dealer. It was a piece of junk! The re-ordered door was only slightly better, but we refused them both, and went with a different company. Do consider that you are going to be waiting a long time for a 6' tree planted even as close as the center of one of your lawns to provide any significant amount of screening or shading of the house. But which particular window are you thinking about? A tree lined up just right with one of them and planted close enough could provide an adequate level of screening pretty quickly - maybe even immediately if of the right size and shape. With it also casting a moving shadow over part of the house some day. Otherwise you could block the street with solid fencing and/or hedging/screening plantings consisting of or including dense shrubby kinds. Usually river birch is not affected by bronze birch borer, with up here anyway it being the European, Himalayan and paper birches that are being hit now that the pest has come this far west. For instance the next door neighbors to a friend that lived near Seattle had two cut leaf weeping European birches and one river birch in their back yard. When the borer came to their neighborhood the European birches were being drilling out and dropping branches on his side of the fence in no time. Luckily the neighbors were quick to have these cut down. Providing in addition a much better view of the river birch, which as of the last time I was on the friend's property was still standing there looking intact.

We have a storm door with a full pane of glass. It allows you to see our lovely door, but lack of a crossbar in the Middle means fingerprints unless you are super careful to just touch the frame. When the screen is in, lack if a crossbar in the middle means you risk stretching or tearing the screen. Also, we have these plastic things that hold the screen or storm in. You can see manufacturer videos about how easy it is to switch, but the plastic has no pliabilty so it's such a miserable job, we often leave the storm in all year. We haven't put the screen in yet, despite tempsin the 90s a week or so ago. So, chech how easy it is to swap screen and storm and in person, not just on a video.

now, now Ken, they may not know our resident helpful UK gardener, floralUK2 yet ;)

I agree with the pot idea, but I sort of envisioned a really tall and larger circumference pot with something evergreen, and maybe changing out the annuals to fit the season. That's just me. I think bigger is better since it'll hold water better and have a higher likelihood of success with any plants that are grown here.

Yes, some pots to the left, extending under the window if possible, but also one pot with something taller - a small trellis with a clematis? Or perhaps as rob333 suggests, a taller evergreen. If you could grow up that wall to the right (a climbing annual on netting, in a long narrow window box placed on the ground) that would be quite pretty but not sure how your neighbor would feel, or if it would interfere with access.

As for plant choices, I'll leave that to others from your neck of the woods, or your local nursery can assist you.

P.S. That little triangle of dirt there - is there enough room to put a stand (like a shepherd's hook) for a hanging basket? Or would that get in the way of entry...?

I'd just use one tall container to the left of the door, weed the paving and make sure when you water not to let it go through the air brick.

Err on the side of big. Small containers can look pathetic. For plants, think something impressive like a Cordyline or Phormium, something trailing, like variegated Ivy and something bright like a couple of Pelargoniums or Petunias. Swap the Pelargoniums for Polyanthus and bulbs for winter and spring.
