Need help choosing a RED rose, finally!

All of my roses so far have been in the pastel hues, which are definitely my favorites. They are all in the same area and I like the look of all the pretty pinks, apricots, and light yellows.

BUT I have now opened up a spot right next to the house in which I would like to put a red stunner. I think that a nice red would look really good against the blue-gray of the house. It will have plenty of room to spread out, at least 8 feet wide. It should be remontant, fragrance is a definite plus, and the foliage should be really attractive and dense the whole year.

Go ahead, TEMPT ME. :)

As someone who prefers the paler colors like you do, the only true red I have is Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona. It satifies all your criteria except maybe the foliage one. It does blackspot for me (but nearly everything does here). I do some organic spraying which controls it.

Someone recently posted about their Francis and had some wonderful pics as well. I'll include the link for that post below.

I'm sure those here who like the reds will give you lots of possibilites.

I forgot that I now have a very small baby red china. I'm thinking it's most likely 'Louis-Philippe' or Cramoisi SupÃ©rieur'.

Either or both of those may be what you're looking for.

Gertrude and James Galway can be grown as climbers/will get bigger than St Switun. What size were you looking for? Even though David Austin lists Gertrude Jekyll as one of the recommended roses for shady positions, here in part sun/shade she got horrible, horrible blackspot. I love the blooms, she has the classic heavenly strong sweet damask fragrance-but I finally removed her because the bush was horrid. If you like myrrh fragrance, have a look at Scepter d'Isle. I've not grown it, so can't comment if it will work in part shade, but it does have an intense myrrh fragrance, to my nose. (Note Tamora is a blend of myrrh plus other notes, but if you love that myrrh/anise, there are lots of choices for you.) dMary----------------Great news and am happy for you!! WE got the HE5t washer and dryer set last Sept. It is not the steam one(from what I read on here that is not worth the extra money). We use our set daily and have had no problems. Our local store owner(Sears) has five kids and he has had no problems with his HE5t set. Remember you do have time left on your protection agreement, so make sure you switch it. The Whirlpool set just does not have as many features as the sears set(but made by the same people). Go to the store and compare.............and again--really happy for you!!!!!!!!!! dennis

Of the roses you listed, I know only about Gertrude Jekyll (very thorny!) and Scepter'd Isle. Don't remember how it was thorn-wise, but it is a lovely rose, kind of thin, tall, and lanky canes, although my Scepter'd Isle which I have been growing in the ground for several years now is only about 3.5-4 ft tall at most. Hard to measure, however, because its cane have a graceful drooping quality. Lovely blooms. Hope that helps. Have you considered Princess Alexandria of Kent? A color I would recommend is the SW 6335 Fire Brick by the Sherwin Williams Brand. The product SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint would help the paint last and last throughout the elements. I hope this helps.

Hi, I am just a newbie, but I have "Maggie"(found 1980) and she is also against a grey background. She is just a baby but I have heard nothing but rave reviews of her, especially in our area.

bellegallica and sheriberrie beat me to it. I was going to say Cramoisi Superieur first, even though it's only been in the ground a month. It's blooming (Big round red heavy blooms) it's head off now.

I love Louis. I have 2 of him. Such a happy rose.

Maggie I think I will love - only in the ground 3 months. She's slower to take hold than the others. Really awkwardly shaped, but everyone says she's wonderful so I don't mind being patient.

I'm also very happy with my Don Juans on Fortuniana. Huge dark red flowers with nice fragrance. He gets some blackspot, mostly when the new bud eyes are developing. Only in the ground since December, so it's a little early to give a really strong recommendation, but they like the heat.

Bellegallica, I have seen a lot about Francis Dubreuil, I'll look into it further. I know what you mean about blackspot, many of mine have it too, but these golden oldies are so vigorous, they hardly notice it.

I had heard a lot about Cramoisi Superieur/Louis Philippe, and I was wondering if all the hype were true. It sounds like those two are a great bet.

I just planted Maggie! I had it in my mind she is more hot pink than red, so I didn't even consider her for this spot by the house. Everyone seems to think she's wonderful, I can't wait to see what she does.

The hype is true. I have an eight foot Louis Phillipe in shade. Maggie is one of my favorite abused roses. It smells great.

I'm in the same zone and it seems that either Cramoisi S. or Louis P. Satisfy all your requirements as to size, foliage, color and scent. For zone 8b, these are undoubtedly two of the best roses ever introduced. They have dense foliage and can be clipped as a hedge if desired. Excellent bloom Spring and Fall and intermittent throughout the summer. They never stop blooming completely. I have only Cramoisi, but Louis P. has been confused with it in commerce as the two are almost identical. They are fragrant but its a light fragrance. Can be used as a cut rose, but lasts only 24-48 hrs. Will reach eight feet high and as broad if you want that, but easily kept to whatever shape desired. Great foliage. No spraying needed. They can get powdery mildew, but rarely, and it is usually transient and not serious. (Maggie is much more open with larger leaves and a little to the magenta side. Not as good as a shrub as Cramoisi.)

Brhgm and Newtie, this is exactly what I wanted to know, and from two folks right in my backyard. Now my only problem is, do I go with Philippe or Cramoisi! Whichever one I come across first will probably win.

Mine are young, but CS has a bigger, more globular flower with more petals. It's a different look than LP which has a lot of pink in the centers. CS is plain, bold red with an occasional white streak. And they are among the smellier ones in my garden - stronger than teas generally.

Cadenza - healthy bush, lots of bright red blooms, Cameron Bohls - the same. Also Dame de Coeur and Valentine [never out of bloom]. All these can be had at Chamblees.

I have CS, LP, Maggie, Valentine and Cadenza. I love them all. Valentine and Cadenza are definitely more red than the others so you would have to determine how "red" you want your rose to be. CS and LP have dense, full foliage and repeat freely for me. Maggie has a more open form, has larger flowers and beats the others when it comes to fragrance. I am growing Cadenza on a trellis against my wooden fence and it is a very manageable climber that produces long-lasting clusters of blooms. Valentine is fantastic!!! It is a bloom machine, (quickly becoming one of my favorite rose bushes) but has little fragrance and the plant is much smaller than the others. Hope this helps.
