2013 Rose Awards (from us)
Comments (57)Best picture: Fame (blossoms stay on the bush for weeks and even if faded they add color to the garden) Best actor in a leading role: Mellow Yellow (planted front and center, always blooming, "look at me" kind of bush) Best actress in a leading role: Julia Child (love those bright yellow blooms, bushy bush) Best actress in a supporting role: Betty Boop (blooms and blooms, never has any issues with mildew, no need to deadhead) Best actor in a supporting role: Christopher Marlowe (just a small bush, blooms regularly, trouble free) Best visual effects: Gourmet Popcorn (a mini which really does look like popcorn) Best foreign language: Yves Piaget (love the blooms on this bush, but sadly, a tree is shading it and it suffers mildew but blooms on) Best visual effects: Dark Lady (love the blooms, but another mildew magnet) Lifetime achievement: Snowfire (has been in place well over 30 years in a difficult, hot location. It carries on year after year.)...See MoreReine des Violettes
Comments (14)Ours never grew canes beyond 6-7 feet, and more often less. In our climate, it really WAS purple, most of the time -- well, mixed shades of lavender would be more accurate. It does go pink in hot weather. If Poodlepup wants a purple climber, there is Carruth's 'Night Owl,' which is truly PURPLE. But it has prickles. Most do. Purple, vigorous, AND NO prickles -- that's a pretty tough combination of requirements. We grow Wisteria here in coastal California, and it is by NO means an aggressive plant. Of course, it is spring-blooming only. I suppose it's a question of what wisteria, but ours is quite contained. I wish I could say the same for morning glory! Comments (11)More good closeups -- thanks! The foliage does resembles the linked HelpMeFind photos. Seven-leaflet leaves, shiny, somewhat elongated. Vielchenblau is nearly thornless and you say this one has few thorns. I have seen it grow much larger than the plant you described, but that specimen was well cared for in a public garden. I hope some others will chime in soon, since several here are experts on the old garden roses....See MoreCombine rose bushes: Rose 'A. Shropshire Lad 'with Rose' Purple Skylin
