Tiny Purple/Rose colored Rose

Does anyone know what this rose is? I took a cutting off a bush that looked more like a shrub about 4' tall. It was covered in these tiny roses and buds. Each rose is about 1 3/4" across.

Most of the roses are a lavender/purple color but others are more of a rosy color. They are all on the same stem.

I like your photo and I wish we could see some of the leaves too, to help with the ID.

This may be an old rose variety called Vielchenblau. That's my best guess, anyway.

I'll try to get some leaf pics. This rose has no smell and isn't a climber. It also has thorns but not to the extent where the entire limb is covered in them.

Thanks everyone so much! I guess I am FINALLY coming to understand color complements...I have lots of purple runner bean vine, purple butterfly bush, some kind of purple/black caladium and the purple/chartreuse sweet potato vines. Lots of lavender/hot pink cleome, hot pink/chartreuse zinnias and verbena boniarensis.I planted roses for the first time this year and have mostly whites/pinks/reds. I'm in Zone 6 in Nashville with a microclimate closer to 7 probably. I haven't had hardly any disease issues and I haven't sprayed....i guess it's just beginner's luck. I AM feeding and watering them like crazy! I'd love any suggestions for fragrant vigorous free flowering roses good in a vase and any photos or links to photos would be great.

Thank you! It does look like the Amadis. I am going to research the boursault more but wanted to answer those questions. I posted more pictures to the above link. Some canes are thornless and others have thorns. From the ground the canes come straight up and are not flexible at first but some canes are longer and those that are longer become arching and more flexible. The leaves are medium green and not rough, they are smooth. Foliage is not shiny, it is matte. At the cottage the owner indicated that his son-in-law had mistakenly mowed over the rose bush so his was short and, well, looked mowed over. So yes, it is throwing out longer canes and those are bending after a certain point. I looked at some pictures of the Amadis and it looks quite similar, my center is more yellow than the pictures but this could just be from those pictures I have viewed thus far, need to spend more time looking at the pics. And I have it in a great location right now to hold the color, although that will change in a few years I'm sure. There are pine trees behind it several feet and on both sides, several yards away. Provides it with great protection and the sun is not beating down on it all day so the color seems to stay great so far. But the pines will grow obviously. Is your Amadis large? Once bloomer? Its my first rose to bloom, the rest of my roses are still buds not opened yet. Thank you for this help! karen

Hi enchanted, it's Diane again. Previously I had suggested that Lauren's Grape poppy was a wonderful plant of the most gorgeous color. Lauren Ogden, a well known garden writer, seed expert, and book author is the developer of this poppy which she selected for over and over in her own garden, till she got the pure strain for Lauren's Grape seed. It's widely available now, but my favorite seeds are from the company, Renee's Garden, and they call their seeds, Lauren's Dark Grape, and it is a rich and dark color. These are annuals and bloom briefly, but the plant can fit about anywhere. The leaves are a beautiful silvery color, and I love the "pepper shaker" seed pod that develops. Let the plant reseed or gather seeds after the pod is ripe, and scatter in late winter or very early spring. Here are a couple of pics, taken by my talented granddaughter. There was a little too much sun the day these were taken. If you've seen my photos, I should mention that every one of them she photographed. Pagan, you have good eyes, the pot on the right is White Princess. It has many blooms too. The Sun was so bright and you can't see the blooms very well. Marie

More good closeups -- thanks! The foliage does resembles the linked HelpMeFind photos. Seven-leaflet leaves, shiny, somewhat elongated.

Vielchenblau is nearly thornless and you say this one has few thorns. I have seen it grow much larger than the plant you described, but that specimen was well cared for in a public garden.

I hope some others will chime in soon, since several here are experts on the old garden roses.

These pics and the description (other than the climbing part) sure look like Veilchenblau. Ramblers and Polyanthas share the same parentage in some cases early on ... that's why they used to be called 'baby ramblers'. The only problem is that I can't think of a Polyantha that's purple.

Is this a rose that you have known for more than just this year? Could this be Veilchenblau that someone cut back?

This rose is at a health food store. It's the first time I've noticed it. It was there when the owner bought the house. I'll ask if she cut it back. It sure doesn't resemble a climber because the base is probably 2' across (individual canes, not 1 stem) and it "fans" out at the top.

I'll try to stop by and get a pic tonight.

That's how ramblers renew themselves ... they produce new canes from the base, and will eventually make a make a dense thicket. This is different from 'suckers' because the rambler's new canes are not on runners away from the base of the rose.

This is the bush. The solid green bush to the rear left is not part of the rose bush.

Looks like Vielchenblau to me. It has probably been cut back, as others have suggested.

I've been trying to make cuttings from this rose without success.

Can anyone give me some hints on how to propagate this one?
