Garden Watchdog Top Five Awards for Rose Nurseries
Comments (17)If my memory serves me correctly, a man by the name of Carl Pallek had a first rate rose nursery in Saskatchewan in Canada, selling mainly Kordes roses. I was a Canadian customer and they were first rate in comparison to other nurseries selling roses. When he got to retirement age, none of his children were interested in carrying on the business. He closed it down and moved to Ontario. When Rene Palatine came to Canada from Switzerland, having owned an organic nursery there, Mr Pallek helped him set up his business in Ontario. The Palatine nursery is still an organic one in Canada. Palatine holds a high standard for their roses and will be carrying many of the older ones. When I downsized from my large rose garden, I sent over 80 pieces of budwood from my first rate older roses that I got from Vintage and other OGR nurseries in the States. So hopefully you will be seeing some of your favourites on the list in the future....See Morewinner of gw rose forum bos award at ars convention
Comments (8)maryl The Garden Web Rose Forum Best of Show award goes to the best one stem rose in the show at the ARS National Rose Shows. Prior to this award, the best rose was considered the hybrid tea queen and ignored all other classes. Best of Show is picked from the winners of each class so it can be a shrub, OGR, miniature, floribunda, spray, or any other type as long as it's a single stem. Our thought in starting this was the word "Rose" in American Rose Society meant any and all roses, not just hybrid teas. Although most hard core ARS exhibitors still strive for the hybrid tea queen, there is now an award for others, who may not grow hybrid teas, to win. The permanent trophy, a sterling silver loving cup, was purchased with $1500 in funds donated by members of the Rose Forum. The hard core hybrid tea exhibitors and many others in the ARS didn't support our endeavour, but the then ARS president, Dr. Tommy Cairns, co-sponsorsed it with us and it was approved at the National convention in Portland, Oregon in spring, 2001. It's now awarded twice yearly at the spring and fall ARS National Conventions. It was first awarded in 2002, in San Jose, California. I was suppose to be there to present it in April of that year, but I had my stroke in March and was still hospitalized in rehab. I did make it to Philadelphia to present it in the fall of 2002. It's now awarded twice yearly at the spring and fall ARS National Conventions. Few Rose Forum members show at these conventions so I doubt any have won the award. I was suppose to be there to present it in April of that year, but I had my stroke in March and was still hospitalized in rehab. Just the fact it was awarded at the World Federation of Rose Societies International Convention indicates its standing. Few who post here now were members of the forum at that time....See MoreTop honors awarded at International Rose Trials
Comments (8)Laura, Thanks for the info on 'Crescendo' and S&W. I've often ordered from that supplier & have always been pleased with their product. They are, however, "middle men" and purchase all their roses from wholesalers like Weeks and the now defunct J&P. Viewing the small, leafed-out plants visible in the photo I linked to above, and considering the fact that S&W is offering the rose only as a container grown plant, I'm led to strongly suspect that J&P was planning to market this rose only as one of its 'New Generation' (own-root) series, & that's probably what S&W is offering. IMHO, if true, that's not good news. I've been underwhelmed with other 'New Generation' plants -- 'Pope John Paul II' and 'Sedona', for example, are two very promising roses that would probably perform much better if grafted. PJPII recently became available on Fortuniana. I'll wager that on that rootstock it will be vastly superior to the wimpy 'New Generation' plants that I'm coaxing along. Unfortunately, Fortuniana is not an option for me....See MoreSoCal Rare Rose Auction Nov 16-17 2013
Comments (40)Beth, I noticed an outbreak of similarly coloured petunias appearing all over the UK (gold and maroon) which caused me to literally avert my eyes on walking past. As a rule, I am a lover of bright colours (no beige in my house or wardrobe) but am strictly old school when it comes to roses - white or pink (or palest yellow at a pinch). Course, that does not apply to the dahlia beds, nor the many rows of cutting gladioli or luridly coloured annuals (apart from said petunias) in my allotment. Particularly enjoying a combo of orange, purple, deep red and acid green.......just not in the roses. And yeah, striped roses, not even pink and white, really do it for me but I was agog at the variety available in the US....See Moreandreark
