Karl, I remember when this award 1st started.. lol

Is the winner a member here?

Yes, I remember how much effort it took to get this award going. But thanks to your efforts in a large part it's still apparently alive and well. I have forgotten however what the original criteria was for winning this award. To refresh my memory and perhaps for those who have joined since those days you can remind us what the specs. are for winning. And of course Congratulations to Ms. Cheng. I wonder if past winners realize that GardenWeb is a functioning forum. It would be nice to hear from the past winners if they are computer savy.

I think the test fields are moving to Ohio simply because Gardens Alive is located there and that is where their other R&D facilities are. Makes sense to have it all in one place - and saves money. Gardens Alive bid for J&P and even though their offer was, I believe, more than Blackstreet it was not accepted because they would not guarantee they would keep the all the jobs in South Carolina where Parks Seed and Wayside are. Too bad as I think they would have been better owners. Personally I think Weeks is in good hands. Garden's Alive have good people there who actually know something about the plant industry. Keith Zary is a good example. I don't know if Tom Carruth is staying with Weeks but hopefully he is. Christian Bedard also knows his stuff. IMO California mainly grows large roses because of Dr. Huey. It simply pushes larger plants. But Dr. Huey does not do well in my area (or most areas this side of the country) and keep in mind since it cannot be grown from seed RMV is a result of it being used. Personally I'd be happy to see it vanish as a rootstock. There is a lot of growing in Arizona these days and I suspect we'll see more there. And don't count out Tyler, TX. But I think in the end that won't matter. The trend is heavily towards own-root and towards liners finished in pots. Much of the public and quite a few garden centers don't want to deal with bareroots. At best I think we'll see one year field grown own-root crops for wholesale use but I'm not holding my breath on that continuing either. As to retail I think you'll see more and more 2 quart pots being used for mail order - even from the big boys. The traditional bareroot budded crop takes two years from planting to harvest. That means you are attempting to guess what the rose market will be in two years. Think of all those growers who planted crops in the winter spring of 2007/2008 for fall 2009 harvest and spring 2010 sales only to see the bottom fall out in September of 2008. By then the planting of the understock and budding (read the most expenses) were spent for a crop that was now likely going to never sell. With liner production you are almost producing on demand and that means you can react to the market far more quickly and keep losses under control. And conversely bring in larger profits if a rose, or the rose market, heats up. I think the changes in nursery ownership and nurseries closing aren�t the only big changes we are in the midst of. John, Your solution sounds simple; but is it solving a problem or just per longing one? If ARS wants judges to abide by this solution they should say so, and than all judges will be using the same procedure when judging. You have to question is it fair to all exhibitors or even in accordance with what the Guidelines mandates? For an example, take a challenge class that specifies three floribundas sprays, all different varieties. With overall appearance being a prime element in judging challenge classes and carries with it an extra 30 points. This includes a pleasing color combination, uniformity of bloom form and degree of openness. Showing three Hannah Gordons etc. all from the same plant, calling one "Hannah Gordon", one "Raspberry Ice" and one "Nicole". More likely assures you of winning with this combination, than a collection of three floribundas sprays all of different varieties as the challenge called for. Is would more likely be the winning challenge, but is this fair to other exhibitors in the challenge class? Because an exhibitor received a rose from a nursery called "Tabris", entering it under that name as suggested. Is not in compliance with the latest ARS "AEN" publication, using only the official approved exhibition name, "Raspberry Ice". Ron Schwerdt

The Garden Web Rose Forum Best of Show award goes to the best one stem rose in the show at the ARS National Rose Shows. Prior to this award, the best rose was considered the hybrid tea queen and ignored all other classes. Best of Show is picked from the winners of each class so it can be a shrub, OGR, miniature, floribunda, spray, or any other type as long as it's a single stem.
Our thought in starting this was the word "Rose" in American Rose Society meant any and all roses, not just hybrid teas.
Although most hard core ARS exhibitors still strive for the hybrid tea queen, there is now an award for others, who may not grow hybrid teas, to win.
The permanent trophy, a sterling silver loving cup, was purchased with $1500 in funds donated by members of the Rose Forum.
The hard core hybrid tea exhibitors and many others in the ARS didn't support our endeavour, but the then ARS president, Dr. Tommy Cairns, co-sponsorsed it with us and it was approved at the National convention in Portland, Oregon in spring, 2001. It's now awarded twice yearly at the spring and fall ARS National Conventions.
It was first awarded in 2002, in San Jose, California.
I was suppose to be there to present it in April of that year, but I had my stroke in March and was still hospitalized in rehab. I did make it to Philadelphia to present it in the fall of 2002.

Few Rose Forum members show at these conventions so I doubt any have won the award.

Just the fact it was awarded at the World Federation of Rose Societies International Convention indicates its standing.
Few who post here now were members of the forum at that time.

Karl, thanks for the update. What irony that you, the prime mover on this award, were in the hospital way back then and unable to attend its initial presentation. Thank the Lord that you have since recovered enough to be a vital part of the team "Roses" (whether we win awards or not)....I can't imagine why any HT rose exhibitor would be against such an award since they can also compete. But I'm sure they had some convoluted reason back then.

They feared any Best of Show award would take the prestige away from the hybrid tea queen.
Over the years since it's inception, very few hybrid teas have won BOS.Lots of shrubs, floribundas, and OGRs have though.
But the HT queen still gets the best press and place on the awards table so they've managed to supress it some.
