Top honors awarded at International Rose Trials

The trials are conducted under the auspices of the World Federation of Rose Societies. The event at Rose Hills is the only international rose trial in North America. Incidentally, Rose Hills Memorial Park is an expansive complex containing a cemetery, mausoleum, crematory, a number of chapels, gardens (AND a flower shop!).

"What do you think? Do you know that the AARS is defunct - that the 2013 AARS rose is the last All-American Rose Selection ever?" Yup, I know. We will do just fine without the AARS. Most of the "winners" evaporate from commerce shockingly fast, which suggests that they aren't the "grow 'em anywhere" treasures the organization would have us believe. It was an industry-promotion machine, and in many ways little more than a marketing tool, IMO. We no longer need that kind of entity making choices for us. If anything, the comments above clearly indicate that the rose growing community has learned that regional assessments shared on a personal level are far more valuable, and that our microclimates can be a determining factor. It has been my experience that a neighbor one mile down the road from me, with the same soil, light and cultivation can have a very different experience, cultivar to cultivar, than I do. The AARS is completely useless in helping growers at that level.

What/who/where is Zary associated with now that J&P is kaput?

I've no information on what Dr Zary's plans are, but I can't imagine that he won't remain active in the world of roses for years to come.

He has a stunning new HT, 'The Crescendo Rose' that was slated for introduction by J&P in 2011. Since its release was sceduled for the 2011 season, the rose must have been in full production for some time. I'm waiting to hear if/when it will be released, and by whom. If any of you have info on the release, please post it here.

The rose honors the Nashville Symphony. It's pictured at the link below along with Keith and his wife in the company of a trio of country divas.

At the "rose trials" link, in the various European trials, a high proportion of the winners are very double, single, semi-double, or cupped, as opposed to HT form.

Crescendo is on S&W's website for sale, but only as a local pickup, containerized. They state, "Not available for shipping due to restrictions".

Not sure where you're located, but they are in White House, Tennessee. I believe most of their offerings are grafted to Huey.

Thanks for the info on 'Crescendo' and S&W. I've often ordered from that supplier & have always been pleased with their product. They are, however, "middle men" and purchase all their roses from wholesalers like Weeks and the now defunct J&P.

Viewing the small, leafed-out plants visible in the photo I linked to above, and considering the fact that S&W is offering the rose only as a container grown plant, I'm led to strongly suspect that J&P was planning to market this rose only as one of its 'New Generation' (own-root) series, & that's probably what S&W is offering. IMHO, if true, that's not good news. I've been underwhelmed with other 'New Generation' plants -- 'Pope John Paul II' and 'Sedona', for example, are two very promising roses that would probably perform much better if grafted.

PJPII recently became available on Fortuniana. I'll wager that on that rootstock it will be vastly superior to the wimpy 'New Generation' plants that I'm coaxing along. Unfortunately, Fortuniana is not an option for me.
