Shrub/tree grows understory to HUGE oak trees

Hi,

Hope someone can help me identify this shrub or tree?

I have setup a Flickr gallery with photos and detailed captions:

There are about 8 of these shrub/trees growing under three HUGE coast live oaks. Its at the very top of a seasonal creek that flows to a lagoon within 1 mile of the ocean in Central California. They have single berries (not clusters) and are now turning dark brown/black in color (prev green and red color). The leaves are smooth and not hairy (check the photos). The biggest are about 15ft tall? and the smallest are 6ft.

It kinda looks like coffeeberry to me (based on internet research) but i thought those plants were small shrubs. Our arborist thought they might be Toyon but he didnt really look closely (he was there to look at the Oaks). I think that Toyon has pointy lobes on the leaves and this plant has smooth edges, so probably not Toyon?

Any thoughts?
