That's a big list you've got there. I don't know how you do it, but I find it very exhausting just to look after 10 roses.

Roses I will be getting rid of:

Falstaff - constantly mildew, and has virus symptoms.
Heritage - due to RMV.
Jude the Obscure - virus symptoms; black canes, caused by extreme hot temperatures, I forgot to cover it.
Soeur Emmanuelle - As above.

Roses I have on order: Evelyn, Mayor of Casterbrige, Jayne Austin, Sidonie, Reine des Centfeuilles, and Nahema.

Shovel pruned Social Climber and Scent from Above by J & P. They are only hardy to zone 6 and although they did survive with protection, they are black spot magnets. So, I shovel pruned them and am replacing with Ramblin' Red and John Cabot, which are hardy in my 5b zone. :) Besides that, Scent from Above is supposed to have a nice deep yellow color, and they fade in the sun to a washed out pale yellow. Yuck!

Finally got rid of Bloomfield Abundance, after 6 years. I felt bad, because it came back like a trooper every year after dying to the ground, but it just didn't make much of an impression on me--the individual blooms were small, pale and lovely, but they were sparse, scattered, and hard to see from 10 feet away. Note to roses: if you're going to have small blooms, have tons and tons of them so they show up. Also got rid of two Blushing KO's that were too big and gangly and grabby for their spot--I had intended to move them, but they were 5 years old and had roots the size of my arms, and ended up just chopping the poor things out with a pick axe instead.

Waving bye-bye today to a Mr. Lincoln that needs to be put out of its misery, and to a single-petalled red climber that does not deserve its prominent position...jillions of thorns, a few dinky flowers. It may be Ramblin Red, I forget, but it is going, in favor of Parade.

Purple Tiger - doesn't get more than a foot tall and I only get two flushes out of it. It's too bad as the blooms are very unique but it's much too tiny for the spot it is in. I might put it in a pot if I feel sorry for it. I'm replacing it with Cinco de Mayo.

White Lightnin' - doesn't bloom very often, blooms don't last, don't have good form, and it gets eaten by JB more than almost any other rose. Will probably be replaced with Pope John Paul II.

Paradise - I really like this rose, but I bought a cheap bodybag and it doesn't do very well. I'll eventually replace it with a better specimen but for now it might be replaced with Rock n Roll or Lime Sublime depending on what catches my eye at the nursery.

Reine des Viollettes - I like this rose, but I bought the home depot version and it hasn't held up well. It dies to the ground every winter and then takes forever to grow two canes about 5 feet long with a bloom on the very end. It will be replaced with a blackberry bush.

David Austins "The Mayflower" might have only 1 month to live. It's got one more upcoming spring flush to show me it's stuff or it's out of here. The blooms have yet to open properly each passing year. Hopefully, this year, the 4th, it will look better. 2/3rd's of the blooms usually just turn brown without opening. It gets no blackspot but, who cares when it never puts on a decent show. Hopefully, it will make me change my mind next month, we'll see.

Dan, I know what you mean about Mayflower. Mine is about the same age as yours. I almost got rid of mine last spring--blooms didn't want to open. But after its spring problems, it really took off, so I forgave it. The only thing I did after the spring bloom was completely prune out a couple of the older canes--all the way to the ground. Once they were gone, new ones sprung up and it bloomed nicely for the rest of the summer. So I figure I'll just have to assist it a bit in the spring (slight pressure with your thumb on the blooms will often make them pop right open--but sometimes you have to gently peel the outer rim of petals so the rest of the rose can open).

I will be curious to see if this year the new canes perform better than the old canes did last year. Maybe this rose just needs to be re-newed a bit every year to bloom its best.

Here's hoping anyway.

Night Owl, a rose pretending to be Blaze but that isn't, and Angel Face. I am actually replacing AF. Deceased from this winter were Lucille Ball, Iced Ginger and Caramel Antike isn't looking too great either. I can live with it though as I have far too many to list sitting in my little portable greenhouse to replace them. With the probable demise of those two yellows I would love to try Joe Woodard from ARE.

I am always heartbroken to have to say goodbye to any of my roses that don't make it through the winter...but it sure is nice to have a perfectly good excuse (to my DH) to go buy new ones that I really want! Lol!

This years obituary includes:

Pink peace - I split this rose and lost both :(

Honor - Winds just too much for it this year

Color magic - Barely surviving

Memorial day - Have two more, so not really a loss, bad performer

Climbing Josephs Coat - That doesn't

Unknown yellow - very weak

So far, I have bought 3 Firefighters, Honey Perfume, Dream Come True, and Home and Family! Going back tomorrow!!!

Here's my list:

White Lightnin' - Thrip and blackspot magnet.
Silver Star - Blackspot magnet and no scent
Claire Rose - Hardly ever blooms, and blooms are boring.
Wright Brothers - Nothing impressive about blooms.
Boardwalk - Huge plant, small blooms.
Red Baron - Nice red, but not much form - gave away.
Reunion - Three years is long enough to wait for it to grow!
Denali - Huge plant and blooms, but weak necks make them all fall over.
Engagement - Florist rose, great form, tiny blooms.
Martha Allen - Lovely silvery color, but small blooms - gave away.

That is all so far, but I have my eye on Careless Love. It blackspots in spite of regular spraying, and the blooms tend to ball. I'm also giving Grande Amore one more chance. The first year, it grew great, but now it is looking less attractive and the blooms are small and rare.

Bon Silene: Not suitable to the climate.
Karl Lagerfeld: Very low tolerance for thrips.
Abbaye de Cluny: Disease prone.
Amber Queen: Not thriving at all after two years in the ground.
Black Baccara: Intolerant of outdoor conditions and insects. Should have stayed a florist rose.

Why do I love when this subject comes up? I love roses, I should be sad to hear so many are on death row and yet the descriptions of the various crappy performing plants ("two long canes 5 feet long with a flower at the end") cracks me up! Well, it's funny until I find one on the list that is a crappy performer and I just bought that one! Yikes!

A lot of my roses are new, many just bands bought this year but they have grown a lot and have blooms and some I am liking better than others. So far, some of the plants that are going to need to prove themselves (before going on The Hit List) are:

Golden Unicorn - not a band but a potted plant bought from a nursery. The blooms have a 5 minute period in which they look good, color and shape-wise, before passing into a blowsy, faded mess.

Blue Skies - Another potted plant bought this year. This one may be the first to go on The List. Strange, strange color. You will either love it or hate it. To me, it is fakey looking. But the worst problem is the plant is very unattractive, already BSed out the wazoo and scraggly. I don't care how beautiful blooms on a plant are, I like a nice looking bush (can I say that?!).

Pink Iceberg - Planted in the ground for a year now....just kinda blah, both flowers and bush.

F.J. Lindheimer - Not a bad plant.....blooms are pretty and bush is moderately attractive but it's in a prominent spot which always means a plant better look good! There are too many other roses in pots (or online) that need a home!

Jude the Obscure - I think I've got a bad plant. It finally is blooming and the blooms are beautiful and fragrant but my plant is worthless and weak! May have to replace this one as everyone raves about it.

Will O' The Wisp - Taking it's sweet time. I love the little unusual colored flowers but (so far) it's been stingy and is very slow growing.

I don't know if it's just coincidence but it seems that my Jude and the Will O' The Wisp were both bought from the same online supplier. There were also a couple of others bought at the same time that didn't survive from last year. They just didn't thrive. Hmmmm. My bands bought from other sources are all growing like crazy.

I've got a small garden and about 25 roses - so my list is small to begin with. If Tipsy Imperial Concubine does not have blooms that open well this season, that's it. She's outa here. Yves Piaget has one more season to prove himself - same reason.

I got rid of Sheer Bliss (maybe not enough sun for such height) and am eyeing Earthsong (probably my fault; I didn't plant the band deep enough, 4 years ago).

In replacement, have adopted a really pathetic looking "Granada" from Home Depot, kind of like bringing home a mangy mutt from the pound. Yes, I know; I should start with a brand new one. But I've always loved Granada in spite of the color being a little bit florid for the rest of my garden. There was a bush here in my back yard when I arrived, 30 years ago, and I've always wanted to replace it. Plu,s the scent is incredible.

I gave away my duplicates of Jeri Jennings & Oshun to my friend and replaced them with Distant Drums and George Burns.

I also dug up my last Pink Fairies, which will be replaced by Paul Cezanne, France Info, and Marvelle. I just couldn't take those nasty, tiny little fairy scratches any more when I pruned them. For some odd reason, they seemed to get infected and hurt way more than the other rose thorns...dunno why.

I always hesitate to post my sps. What is one person's dud is another's favorite. I sp'd Ambridge Rose and Sharifa Asma. First one too delicate for my heat and too short-lived. A purple daylily now lives in its spot.
SA just wasn't my cup of tea--my tastes are not refined yet. I put Evelyn in its coveted spot.
Oh, and Yves Piaget, which only looked good a few days a season. Either it was too cold, too hot, or too wet for its blooms to open right. However, when it was good, it was very good.
Replaced it with The Imposter.

I am getting rid of a few of my knockouts just to make room for more interesting roses. Intrigue is on the list too, I have a tree rose intruige that is a one cane wonder, it looks bad compared to the other bushy full tree roses I have. The intruigue rose in the ground is not much better, it is still under a foot tall after being in the ground for over a year. It was a body bag purchase, so I didn't expect much. Europeana is coming close to being gone, in our cool and rainy spring it has become a PM magnet. I never have had powdery mildew before and the fungicides I am using don't seem to put a dent in it. Hopefully it will clear up with some warm weather.

Dallas, I have mildew on my Europena as well. My Intrigue is a PITA

I had to SP my 18 year old Yves Piaget because I was rebuilding a border. She had done admirable duty for all those years stopping passersby when she was in bloom. I'm really going to miss those blooms. I also found a home for Pure Poetry. After all the chatter about her I was not overwhelmed. For one her blooms opened too fast for me, although to be fair she was only a year old and may have improved with time. In my ever decreasing stock of roses, I want something that I fall in love with, and Pure Poetry wasn't it.

I have removed a few more of my HT's simply because between midge, beetles and black spot, they are just too much work for too little return. I continue to seek low maintenance alternatives.

Sadly, it might have to be my beloved Ginger Hill. It is the only in-ground rose that suffered any die-back, and it was significant. It now has only 2 viable canes our of 6 - 7. I am so disappointed. I may try budding a couple of bits of it to multiflora.

Modern Magic isn't looking spiffy either, but it was always a runt.

Snowheather I wouldn't be too hasty to prune the white HT Denali. It took until my Denali's fourth year for the canes to finally get strong enough to support those huge beautiful white blooms, but finally last year they did an admirable job the entire year.
That certainly made it one of the more spectacular white roses I have ever seen.
I was sorely tempted the first three years to do the deed as well, but I just kept holding off for some reason. I am soooo glad that I did.
