Suggested Pruning Tools for your Xmas Wish List

I read some of your wishes on the other thread and wanted to make some suggestions.

I can understand Felco pruners being on a number of lists and agree that they are essential. But interestingly enough, I have a tool that has replaced my Felcos for 99% of my needs. It's a pair of what I have dubbed "my snippies".

They are very lightweight and short so they fit in my pockets easily, and they can cut anything up to and including 1/3"+ branches. I use them for everything shrub and perennial(plus small tree branches), just not thick tree branches. I keep one pair inside , to do indoor plant pruning and cut-flower arranging, and 3 pairs outside. They are made by Florian Tools in Ct. and here is a link. Florian is having a sale now too!

Also, Annette, Florian's large ratchet loppers are excellent (we have both lg.sizes) and the ratchet concept saves you from having to have alot of arm strength. The tool actually does it all itself.All you do is hold one handle steady and lever the other handle up and down, while the ratchet blade closes down on the branch and cuts cleanly through it.

The loppers are expensive but I can't tell you how thrilled we have been w/ them these last 5 yrs.They will be with us through a lifetime of gardening, as will our felcos and snippies. Like any great tool, always a wise investment. Everyone I know who has not sprung for a great tool, after they finally do buy one, they are kicking themselves for not doing it sooner.

we use these for ornamental grasses, large stands of iris, peonies, or other perennial swaths.

PrMoon, here in Ma. you can get welded iron Obelisks (round and square) from a garden store in holliston ma. and I have also found them at Homegoods! They are made in mexico, and i have also seen them in a gardening store in wilton ct. and at brimfield.In fact, if hit at the right time, HG can be a really great source for gardening decorations and structures. Mahoney's Winchester too.

LOL Mindy you've been reading my mind, next on the list to buy, ratchet loppers. I agree with you on the little snippies, off hand I don't know which brand my two pair are. We learned a long time ago, buy good ones and you never have to buy again, cheaper in the long haul :o).

Mindy....thanks for that tip on the obelisks. I'll look for them next time I'm at Home Goods.

I have bought my loppers at Sears. They replace the Craftsman line when they break, no questions asked. We haven't had to replace them, but we have replaced our Craftsman shovel when it broke and last time we changed to the metal shank rather than the wood one.

I love my pruning hand saw. I forget which one I have, but it works great. Our son would rather use a battery powered electric saw.

"I better burn the CC bill before DH sees it. " Does the DH still buy flowers for you? Even when I was single and bought my plants, if it produced flowers and somehow I croaked it, I figured I got more enjoyment out of it and spent less money than for a bouquet that lasts a week. If you'd like some entertainment, there's a great thread about how to 'count' roses... 1. Mini roses don't count. 2. Floribundas 'because they are not full-fledged hybrid teas' count as half. 3. Shrubs, Climbers, Ramblers, Old Garden Roses, etc. don't count because they can be considered "landscaping." 4. Roses not planted 'or in pots' don't count. (See the "Territory" Clause). 5. Roses that were discounted count as half. 6. Roses received as gifts don't count. 7. Odd numbers must always be rounded off, if you're out of room, round the number down. For every one-hundred, divide by two. This is known as a "stock split." 8. Roses whose names you don't know or can't remember obviously don't count. 9. Roses that are on Shovel Prune Watch don't count; the roses that replace them also don't count as they cancel each other out. Duplicate/multiples count as one as they are considered a set. Roses that are not planted in a bed don't count. (See the "Landscaping" Addendum). Bareroots don't count because they are dormant when they arrive; once you plant them and they start to bud out, well, you've already done your count, so you will just have to wait until next season, by which time you'll be sure you already counted them. Mislabeled roses don't count because you probably already have one of them somewhere, which has already been counted once, probably. Anything less than Grade 1 counts only a fraction, and since fractions are not whole numbers they can be rounded off (remember the rounding off rule). Roses that you think you might give away can be excluded from the count, makes it easier to part with them; if, by some chance you wind up keeping them, oh well. HTs that get huge and wind up taking more than one space should be counted twice, but remember the duplicate rule. Now if, after counting, you have under a hundred roses, you must immediately place some orders and they don't count because they're in transit and therefore not in the ground. Roses ordered on a whim really don't count because they were never on a list. (This is known as the List Rule: If it's not on a list, it doesn't exist, most likely). If you cut many roses and give them away, this is considered Charity, and everyone knows that you get special allowances for Charity, which brings us to... Tax Deductions. (see Claiming Roses as Dependents). See? You really didn't have as many as you thought you did! Time to go order some more!

Jeannie, How about one of the Ayrshire ramblers? I have been rather falling in love with 'Venusta Pendula', which is a very vigorous once-bloomer with pink-edged white semi-double blooms and dark pretty foliage. We have summer heat, which you folks do not, I know, but I hear VP does well in Germany, another place with cool summers. The Ayrshire ramblers, bred from Rosa arvensis, one of the few European members of the Synstylae group, have a reputation for doing well in poor conditions. I don't know if they would have disease problems in your area: mine are healthy until late autumn, when the older leaves get black spot. I can handle that. 'Venusta Pendula' is generally considered to be not fragrant, but mine is decidedly myrrh-scented: either other gardeners can't smell this fragrance, or they're listening to each other rather than going out and smelling the rose. Or I have the wrong rose, but I don't think so. Another Ayrshire rose, I believe similar, 'Ayrshire Splendens', is definitely myrrh-scented. I have this variety too, but am still getting to know it. The myrrh fragrance is thought to have entered the English roses through an Ayrshire ancestor of one of David Austin's founding roses, 'Constance Spry' I believe. If you can get cuttings, by the way, the Ayrshire roses root very easily, though this is true of ramblers in general. The chief item on my wish list is that the 78 or so roses that make up our definitive order from Petrovic in Serbia arrive reasonably promptly and in good order, and in a period when it's not raining hard or snowing. That's a fair amount of wishing, but not totally unreasonable. Mr. Petrovic told me he'd be sending the order out around the end of November, but I haven't heard anything from him (I need to get in touch), but it's been raining here for the last week, and perhaps they've had weather equally unsuitable for digging over there. It's been raining abundantly here this fall--and we have so far no slides and no signs of slumping on our land--and temperatures are forecast to begin dropping next week after a very mild fall. So, so far, so good. I've done most of my planting and taking cuttings, so my main task after the Petrovic roses are planted is pruning and maintenance. Yeah I've made numerous changes lately(seems like my 'off-days' lately have been two hours of work outside, come in get some rest, post here' two more hours of work, repeat, etc. I've removed many of the 'dwarves' in my front drive bed with mini's and 'smaller' dwarves, dwarves that grow 1-3" a year tops. There are still a few larger ones, even a few that might be classified as intermediate(picea mariana aereovarigiata), but for the most part, the bed is mini's and small dwarves. I will undoubtably have problems anyway, but it is going to be much less now then it was. If things aren't really crowded until twenty years from now I will conider that a victory.

It has been a good year for me, finding all the tools I wanted/needed on SALE. Except the Maslin pan, of course, since it's always full price, but so worth it. My 40+ son came for a visit, helped me make Apple Pie Jam, and now wants a Maslin of his own! He's going to need a really big stocking. I've asked Santa for a pocket camera to take photos of what I bake and can for my farm's Facebook page and website. The Olympus Stylus actually has a setting for "cuisine"!!!! LOL MY SIL, the chef, gave me a little potato peeler with a ceramic blade - wonderful for apples too large or too soft to fit into the rotary peeler - it looks like a disposable shaver. On my wish list is a Kyocera Mega-peeler with a much wider ceramic blade that could also be used to shave cheese or chocolate, besides those huge Wolf River apples. The little peeler is on my shopping list for gifting my friends who cook, bake, and/or can, and a Side-Swipe blade for my DD's Kitchenaid stand mixer since she keeps drooling over mine when she uses it. I would love some Felco Pruners! Mine right now are the Fiskars and they don't last long around here.
I also want an umbrella trellis for a nice clematis.
But, hubby never thinks of garden stuff to get me, so Santa may have to intervene!

I sent my son a link to Felco pruners.

My husband asked me today what I want for my birthday (22nd) and Christmas. I told him that I've ordered what I want, to just pay the credit card bill! LOL :-)
