Your 'Christmas wish list'

Is there anyone else out there that would love to see a couple particular conifers show up at their door on Christmas day? Most collectors and enthisiasts surely have a wish list, well I thought it would be fun to post mine and see what other people are seeking as well. It's always a good way to find and learn about new and amazing cultivars.

Mine are:

Cedrus Atlantica 'St. Catharine'. A treasured little green mini.

Picea ? 'Blue Tear Drop'. Saw a picture once on Coenosiums Gardens and instantly fell in love with it. A dwarf blue-green 'tear drop'. Radiant.

Abies Koreana 'Gait'. A wonderful intermediate fastigate fir with masses of lovely cones.

Picea Glauca 'Goldilocks'. Another conifer I've seen on Coenosiums, a lovely small shrub of gold hues.

Picea sitchensis 'Rayner's Rescue'. A tiny Sitka spruce mini from the Foxhollow post. Fantastic. Wow!

What are yours? Maybe you have 25 'St. Catharines' just laying around your yard and want something I have! Haha! At least I can dream.

no such list for us colder zone peeps ...

the best you could do is a gift cert or an order confirmation for spring delivery ...

oooohhhhh how bleak xmas will be.. now that i know others get conifers for xmas ... bah humbug ... lol ...

My list includes ANYTHING miniature or dwarf I don't already have. Though right now a 10 gallon Picea englemannii 'Bush's Lace' to give a new bed an established look would be nice....

Will..Abies koreana 'Gait'(another on my short list)is available porterhowse.com. They also have A.k. 'Blauer Eskimo'.
I'm thinking an order from Porterhowse may be under our Christmas Tree (I'll give my husband a gift certificate...heehee)

Ingrid and Tosca: It's nice to know I was missed: thanks for the welcome back! I was in Florida for two months and went into hibernation as far as the forum was concerned. Failed to offer good wishes on a lot of birthdays, too. But I was present, though silent, and the garden is definitely still around, and growing. Well, sort of. We've gone over three months with about half of inch of rain in that period, and no rain in the forecast. The garden is still hanging on, and at least the temperatures are dropping. Lately we've been transplanting things. This is earlier than usual, but the plants are so dry and so miserable that I figure they'll probably gain from the transfer. I'm weeding and mulching, and staying in touch with a lot of Italian gardening enthusiasts, whom I would say are a relatively small but rapidly growing group in this country. The weather's pretty (though dry), and all in all I'm a pretty contented gardener. Thonotorose: Your situation sounds grim. Good luck. Melissa

Here's wishing for good weather for your drive too Sharon. Definately nothing beats being surrounded by family and friends! This year we may have to do much of that via phone/emails/web-cam but that's OK. DH's brother and his wife and kids are staying around here for the holidays too, plus one of my nephews is doing a practicum/internship in Edmonton for the winter so he'll be here too. What's on my gift wish list? We usually buy the kids a few individual gifts plus one bigger "family gift". Last year we bought lots of fun family games -- Life, Monopoly, Sequence, Clue Jr., plus a few more. We had a blast learning/re-learning them! Our oldest is 10 now so yeah, a few of them were a bit over their heads yet but that's OK -- at least we know they will 'grow into them'! LOL Not sure what we are going to do this year though. Haven't given it much thought yet!

I agree with Jan - I would love to have Southern Dazzle from Nicole Harry. Now I could also make a want list that is quite long. I would love to have many of the Stamile intros for '09 and some from the Gossards and some from the Rices and on and on and on. I have told my husband that I want $$ for daylilies for Christmas and birthday. I think he will gladly do this since he has such a hard time shopping for me. He is happy for me to make it so easy for him. At least I hope he takes me at my word since I have already reserved Sir Francis Drake and Get Jiggy from Floyd Cove plus won several on the Lily Auction. Happy Holidays, everyone! Ann

Vermiculite, perlite, a bale of peat, plant labels, and new tubes for my plant lights. If I've been a really good girl (probably haven't), I'd like another seed starting mat. I know that's stretching it. Can you guess how I spend my winter months? Oh, more snow would be good. My gardens would really appreciate it. Sledding would be much easier. I just made an order from Porterhowse. Don seems like a nice guy and they have a lot of rare and unusual stock. Mostly I am interested in their Deodar Cedars since I have a couple of great sources for everything else(S&S and Coenosiums).

I ordered
2 Cedrus atlantica 'Saphire Nymph' #1 pots
1 Cedrus atlantica 'Liliput' #1 pot
1 Cedrus deodara 'Feelin Blue' #1 pot
1 Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Fletcheri' #1 pot

Cost a pretty penny, but they aren't easy to get conifers. I'll post some pictures once they arrive.

Hey Will,

Sounds like you are on a roll.

Its Pica mariana 'Blue Teardrop'

one of the newer varieties coming from 'Nana'. Usually without any interference it creates quite interesting forms, similar to water drops. That is why it is called the 'Blue Teardrop'. The structure is compact, highly dense with decorative, nice blue-green needles. Medium speed of growth, about 4-6" (10-15 cm) per year.

Dave, I am guessing that this is grafted and not rooted cuttings, correct? I have had people tell me that 'nana' is usually rooted and not grafted, but I don't feel like laying my head in the snow to get a look at mine.

Bill, I see no indication that this cultivar was ever grafted.

Excellent...

That explains why my 'nana' is surviving periodic flooding. Now I have to get my hands on one of these guys and drown him. The 'Nana' is back in da pond in this pic

What an immaculate little tree Dave. Truely a gem. Did yours come from a friend or a source that has others? I'm drooling, awesome!

4-6" per year? That's pretty signifigant growth. Might be a ten foot tall specimen in old age.

will... you better get this ....

ALL HEIGHT ESTIMATES ARE AT TEN YEARS ...

ALL PLANTS CONTINUE TO GROW THEREAFTER ... at the annual rate ... resin once suggested that a true redwood failed to continue above 386 feet once it could not overcome gravity ... in pumping water up

ergo ... if 10 feet at 10 years.. and it grows one foot per year.. it will be 20 feet tall in 20 years .. 30 at 30 .. etc ...

this further complicates your spacing ... ken

Yeah I've made numerous changes lately(seems like my 'off-days' lately have been two hours of work outside, come in get some rest, post here' two more hours of work, repeat, etc.
I've removed many of the 'dwarves' in my front drive bed with mini's and 'smaller' dwarves, dwarves that grow 1-3" a year tops. There are still a few larger ones, even a few that might be classified as intermediate(picea mariana aereovarigiata), but for the most part, the bed is mini's and small dwarves. I will undoubtably have problems anyway, but it is going to be much less now then it was. If things aren't really crowded until twenty years from now I will conider that a victory.

Will,

The 'Teardrop' came from friend who is a buyer for a nursery I used to work for part time.

This cultivar is good for 2-3 inches (5.08-7.62cm) of growth a year due to part shade. My way of slowing growth because of space limitations.

intermediate(picea mariana aereovarigiata),

mine has gone from 2 foot to 8 feet in 5 years ... intermediate my pastie white ...

This 'Picea mariana Aereovarigiata' has doubled in height in the last 4 years.

(Distinctive
characteristics.) "A cultivar with a confusing nomenclature, as pointed out by H.J. Welch. It has been grown as P. glauca 'Aurea' for years. (Conifers The Illustrated Encyclopedia - D.M. van Gelderen and J.R.P. van Hoey Smith).
'Very rare. Needle tips yellow-gold, at least on young foliage. Lovely; Looks from a distance like a yellow-tipped BLUE COLORADO SPRUCE.' (NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE TREES - Arthur Lee Jacobsen)
