Annie Laurie McDowell is about to pop!

I drastically pruned this plant in January. It received a light feeding of Gro Power Plus, less than half the "normal" annual rain and water from the lawn sprinklers, nothing else. The wall is 5' tall and the rose is planted on the north side of it. This is what she looked like today! The fog lifted and sun broke through around 3 PM so I could take the shots. I can't wait until it warms up a little more so these buds all pop! This is ungroomed, not dead headed and not hosed out to remove dust, dirt, debris and yellowed foliage. The plant has literally remained untouched for the past three months. Kim

Stunning! I'm quite jealous. I'd be sitting out on that patio every morning with my coffee enjoying that view, not wanting to start my day! Your dog is equally beautiful, by the way.

It looks chlorotic to me. That can be nitrogen and iron deficiency. It can also be caused by over watering. Nitrogen flushes though the soil with water. Too much water can reduce the amount of available nitrogen, as well as reduce the amount of oxygen in the soil. Iron is better absorbed with nitrogen, like taking Vitamin D with Calcium. One aids the other to be absorbed and utilized. It shouldn't surprise you some look that way while others don't. If they were all budded to the same root stock, so all the roots were genetically identical, they would pretty much be afflicted with the same maladies at the same time, within the limits of the scions' genetics. But, they aren't. Each one has a different root system with different capabilities. Some absorb iron more easily than others, just like some people absorb nutrients from foods more easily than others. That's a huge benefit of having a garden all budded on the same root stock. It's often easier to figure out what to feed and how to to use. With each root system often completely different from the next, it can lead to one area requiring more of some type of fertilizer than others. Check to see if the pots seem water logged. If the soil appears, feels and smells as it should, then holding too much water shouldn't be the issue. What have they been fed, how much, and when? Perhaps these particular plants require heavier levels of iron and nitrogen. Multiflora types do here in my garden due to their inability to deal with higher alkalinity. Many roses aren't as efficient in dealing with lower nitrogen and iron locked up in insoluble compounds due to alkalinity. Sometimes, the plants grow much more quickly than they are able to take up the nitrogen and iron. I used to see that in the old garden when heavy mulches of fresh horse manure were applied then heavily watered in. A lot of nitrogen from the urine pushed the growth faster than iron could be absorbed, or when insufficient iron was available because the conditions were still too alkaline so it wasn't being released. If the issue is seen in older leaves, it means it occurred when those were growing as new foliage, or perhaps the plant is preparing to shed them as they have reached the end of their useful life. In new foliage, the issue is currently occurring and can be "fixed". If you have recently fed them, perhaps they are being pushed from the freshly applied nitrogen combined with the heat. If the food didn't contain enough iron, they may benefit from something which contains a bit higher available iron. If they haven't been fed in a while, they may be telling you they need feeding. It's also possible there is enough iron there, but they are reacting to the iron being locked up in the soil by alkalinity. Perhaps the ones already showing the issue are more sensitive to it than the others, or those pots have become more stressed than the others due to being more exposed to reflected heat or direct sun? It's difficult to determine without actually seeing how they are arranged, how they are exposed to potentially affecting causes. Might the affected pots get more heat from nearby hard scape? Or, might they not get as much sunlight as the ones not showing the chlorosis? If the others are heading toward the same condition, it sounds as if it's heat, water levels or lack of fertilizer. The ones already showing the symptoms are either more sensitive to the issue, or are encouraged to be more sensitive because of more heat to their pots, pushing them to grow more vigorously, using up the available nutrient levels faster. When and what did you feed last? They are showing they seem to need more iron and nitrogen, whether it's because they didn't receive enough; it's been flushed through the soil by more water; are being pushed by greater heat; are reacting to alkalinity issues; or are just in a more vigorous growth spurt than those nutrient levels can efficiently provide for is difficult to say from the photos. Catsrose, I got interested in ALM after reading some post here on HMF about her. Then I read her HMF description and member comments. There were a lot of comments about how her fragrance wafts and is the strongest someone's ever smelled, and how much she's willing to bloom. Here in the summer we're hot and most rose scents burn off to nonexistence, so I got visions of a wafting rose by my front door, always in bloom. Then there's the reported disease resistance, low thorns, and easy care. Something about this rose just seemed almost too good to be true, but I was hoping it's just a treasure that I have yet to experience, I guess. So is it not all of those qualities? By the way, I love cats and roses too, and my dog, so I guess I could have been Catsdogrose. Seil and Catsrose, I was intrigued to see that you're both in Zone 6, but ALM was not hardy for Seil, yet grows to 15X15 for Catsrose. That's a huge difference. Am I missing something? I was hoping that our Zone 5b cold winters would limit ALM to a more manageable size, like 6 X 6, or even 8 X 8. Is that not the correct thinking? I have considered weeping China Doll and other roses recommended, but they're only mild for fragrance on HMF, and I'd like to get something very fragrant that wafts in the front, if possible. I first considered ALM for growing on several arbors that I newly installed. But the lack of hardiness was what made me reconsider. Even though the front of my house is not protected, it's probably the warmest place on this property due to all the concrete and rocks absorbing heat and then reflecting it back during the night. Last winter, my Heritage rose never even lost its leaves, and it's planted in the front. That's unheard of in my zone, though granted last winter was freakishly warm. I raised the seedling in the Newhall garden. In those years (early nineties), that area experienced a one hundred degree temperature swing from summer to winter (115 - 15 F) many years. The "milder" years only swung about 80 degrees, with the extremes not quite as dramatic as the more volatile ones. Anything potted remained in the pot ghetto where MANY cans of soil shaded the can sides. I had to create shade there with plants, stacked blocks to create raised beds, and groups of potted plants. As with any "infant plant", it requires creating a "nursery" area where you can more easily regulate and control the conditions. I had that in Encino, where "winters" were not sufficient to stimulate black berries to flower and the hibiscus flowered all winter long. Summer for the past several spiked to the triple digits a few times and was frequently in the mid to high nineties. Fortunately, I could use existing plants and the shade of the house to provide more protection than I could provide in the rear (western and southern exposure) where the adult plants struggled. I would only plant things in gallons during "winter" when I knew the conditions wouldn't fry them quickly. Once it began climbing into the eighties and higher and remaining there, two, three and five gallon cans were the rule for most plants. It takes a lot longer to completely overheat two and more gallons of damp soil than it does a gallon. Even here, where it has seldom exceeded the low eighties, I have to shield smaller pots from the intensity of the blistering sun. The air and wind are cool, but that sun is brutal and it fries things VERY quickly.

Galgal if I ever do you'll be the first to know. Virginia, they haven't got to her yet or anyone else in that area, that I know of. It's hard clay over there, which could account for slow growth, but since she's growing inch by inch and everyone says she's a slow grower, I think that could be another reason. I've noticed That roses over there do tend to take a little longer to take off and I think it's the clay and because I'm still, adding to that area trying to make it better with mulch, rabbit manure, chicken manure, ect. The ones they have gotten have always been in soil that I've worked for years, and now is over shaded to much from the trees. Did you see the post where I told you they tried to get SDDJ? I'm glad I caught it in time, and that might be why he didn't root. I noticed after that through this year he was losing a few canes and I was wondering why, but was either so busy, or feeling bad I almost didn't catch it. I dug him up and planted him really deep. I read in Susan Verrier's gallica book that deep planting discouraged voles, and I was out of my main go to to get rid of them. I don't think my colder weather in the winter has anything to do with it, or atleast I don't recall her losing any cane during winter. I'll pay extra close attention this year.

When did you know that this rose was going to be great? Thanks for putting up the pictures and I wish you more successes like this. All of us can put up pictures of our roses but only a few can say they raised them from seedlings. Congratulations again on this masterpiece.

Really beautiful. My plant from Burling is 2 inches tall in a band pot. I suppose it will take a little while to look like this gorgeous creature.....

Thank you! I knew as soon as I saw the foliage and total lack of prickles, I would retain it, but when it flowered, it stole my heart. I wish it was at MY house. This is the decade-plus old plant at a friend-client's house. The dog is hers, too. Brodie is a bit over a year old, white, male Golden Retriever. I spend my time in that back yard attempting to maintain the climbers on the walls; the lemon trees and pots on the patio while he insists I throw the balls for him. But, the world stops when his "daddy" comes to be door! Each of my three dogs are smaller than his head. Two retired brood female Toy Fox Terrors and an old, blind, slug Chihuahua. My Annie Laurie McDowell is smaller, too, having only been in the ground for less than a year, in a rather inhospitable spot where it receives too much reflected heat, but that's the only ground/fence space I can create for her. Should she so well in my climate? Central Alabama, plenty of water, but humid and can be quite hot. (Though usually not as hot as Texas)

I wish I could gell you, Kay. I know she's been grown in quite a few locations around the country and none of those from whom I've heard have ever mentioned any disease issues. But, I've not grown her in a muggy climate so I can't say. It will be interesting learning how she does there, though. Where in Central Alabama? I was born in Birmingham and raised on the Alabama-Florida line. My great grandmother was the first lady "Hookie Cop" in Alabama back in The Depression.

Pretty much any rose can be budded, Susan. As I've stated before, this one was budded on Pink Clouds as one of the very first plants propagated by Burling way back when Mel Hulse brought me the large cooler full of bloom sprays to Sequioa for me to take to Annie Laurie to obtain her permission to name it for her when we filmed the documentary about Ralph Moore. As with Teas and other slower to develop plants, own root versions will accomplish this. They just take longer. Keep your fingers crossed. I sent K&M bud wood this summer. If they like how it performs for them in their garden, they may begin offering it budded on Fortuniana. Thanks. Kim

I came across pictures of Annie Laurie McDowell several years ago on the web and the rose stole my heart. I trudged over to SJHRG to see her only to be told she had been lost in a bad windstorm.

I fear that my micro-climate may be too chilly for her. Mid 60s with a cold blustery wind is the norm.

I have never seen her in person and am enjoying your pictures of her tremendously.

Oh, WOW! You must be so proud! How neat to have created such a great rose that will bless so many folks with its beauty. I hope to have her some day if the waiting lists ever get caught up. Just gorgeous. (Brodie looks like a sweetie, too :)
