Joseph's Coat, Jacob's Robe, or Pinata?

Hi rose people,

I killed my Joseph's Coat. Tried to move it from the narrow arbor, where it sliced and diced its way through my arms twice a week, but the roots had grown under one of Grandpa's old concrete septic tank covers.

Hubby is missing "that St. Joseph's Medal rose."

I have a place up against an east facing fence that screams for those hot colors. Joseph's Coat did not have the prettiest foliage, and I was wondering if any of you would recommend replacing it with Jacob's Robe or Pinata instead. I would especially appreciate hearing from those of you in Southern California.

I just bought my 3rd [and last] Jacob's Robe at Chamblees this weekend. It is a weak plant, but this one looks strong and I will baby it. The other 2 died despite good care. Colors are much prettier than Josephs Coat. I was told that Pinata defoliates in summer. So it sounds like a toss up as to which is best. If I cant get this Jacob's Robe to thrive, I will give up. The colors on the other two are too harsh. Westerland sounds like a better rose. I have one in a pot and it is strong. Colors in photos look pretty. Others may have a different opinion, but it sounds like there are better climbers than these 3........

You have already grown Joseph's Coat so I probably cannot add much to what you know. Except that we bought ours from Heirloom several years ago and even in limited sun it has grown very well. Two weeks ago I cut it down to about 1.5 feet and moved it to a very sunny spot in the front yard. So far so good on the transplant. Myself if anything ever happened to this rose I would go right out and buy another one. I love it.

That rose never did much for me. It's a blackspot magnet. A different rose entirely, but much hardier, bigger, and profuse-blooming is Pleasantrie aka Pleasant Valley. It's descended from Mutabilis and it's quite similar except much brighter yellow, orange, and pink. Gets huge though. Way too big for me so I had to give it away. It's a single, unlike JC, but you get a thousand more blooms and less BS.

Wait...it's been a long time since I went to Sunday school, but did Jacob have a coat of many colors too? They must've been all the rage back in Biblical times! Actually, who the heck IS Jacob anyway? Wasn't he the one with the whale? It sounds like a case of the grower taking naming liberties with the Bible. Frankly I think if they rename it anything it should be something like "Concertina Wire." I have to put on a Kevlar body suit to get within 5 feet of mine!

Hi, I recieved a joseph's coat for Mother's Day. It seems to be doing great where I put it and growing great. My dummy question is I have never had a climbing rose, and not sure about what I should do for the training. It is planted next to a tall fence, and close to the corner of the house. So.... Also if anyone could help me. I have a rose from last year. Dont remember the name. Large red rose that blooms on new growth. It was great last year but this year I am having a problem that I blamed on the weather. The pedals outer edges look horrible. I thought maybe the wind and rain ( we had a lot this spring and early summer)but I notice that it is still happening and saw some already forming on some buds. Any idea what is going on? Please help a newbe out, my grandmother's are all passed away and mom dosent know anything about plants, flowers , etc

I like my Joseph's Coat. I transplanted it too this winter without cutting it back that much, and it didn't mind. It is blooming already.

My Pinata has never acted like a climber after years. It is not any more disease resistant than Joseph's Coat. I don't know anything about Jacob's Robe.

Renee -- Since Joseph's Coat didn't have the greatest foliage for you, might you consider instead 'Mutabilis.'
It does the same marvelous color shifts, and is completely disease-free in California.
I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are anywhere near Newbury Park, CA, there is an Heirloom garden where you can see a mature Mutabilis.
Though it's considered more of a big shrub than a climber, this one was planted half under oak trees. In response, it has climbed up through the oaks in a very attractive manner.
The location would be the Stagecoach Inn, Ventu Park Rd., Newbury Park, not far off the 101 Freeway.

I hate to say it, but of the three roses, Joseph's Coat is the best. It does rebloom like a champ even if its foliage is prone to blackspot and rust. Look at Aloha Hawaii for something new that is reputed to be disease resistant. It's not as brightly colored as Joseph's Coat, but nice.
