How high is the fence? Will the canes intermingle in any way with the shrubs, or are the shrubs sufficiently far away from the fence that the roses will grow unimpeded? (That will matter a lot when it comes time to prune those canes!)

You want only orange(ish) or yellow(ish) climbing roses?

Do you care about fragrance?

Can the flowers be small or should they be "typical" size (for a floribunda or hybrid tea)?

Do the roses have to rebloom, or can they only have one bloom flush per year?

(I know, I know. Lots of questions, but answering them will give people a much clearer idea of what you hope for.)

When I had Joseph's Coat it did not perform well. Long and gangly and lots of black spot problems. It was the first rose that I ever SPed. Most of my climbers go up higher than a chain link fence, at least 8 to 10 feet. Down the street, there is someone who has grown two climbing pink Fairies onto a chain link fence. This is an excellent rose with very little disease, small bloom, with no fragrance, but a continually blooming rose. It is beautiful. Check it out on HelpMeFind.com.

My best climber is Fourth of July and I just got Dublin Bay which has no diseases. So far, so good. CJ

Something like The Fairy would work. It's whats called a polyantha. It grows wider than tall which would be good. Most climbers have bare legs and get too tall and more flowers on top. There are many such roses but none come to mind. Most likely others will chime in.

I have Brite Eyes & love it. The colors are lovely and it is extremely hardy and blackspot resistant. It was hybridized by Radler of Knock Out fame so it is really a good choice for a beginner.

I love pinks especially, yellows are great, what i liked about the orange of josephs coat was that it wasnt too orange.
I dont mind the shape of flower, fragrance is an added bonus. the shrubs would be far enough away to provide circulation. The fence is 4 ft high, i planned on training the canes horizontally , and some on top to have heavy blooming there. Also i really want them to be reblooming, that is one thing for sure.

i have the fairy in a low growing shrub form, they are very easy to care for!

the more i read online it looks like brite eyes is the way to go, but it may take a few to cover the fence.

What I hate about Golden Showers is that the blooms don't last very long. Joseph's Coat will never cover your fence because you'll be replacing it every year. Jacob's Robe is similar to JC in color but a much hardier rose.

We planted the yellow climber "Sky's the Limit" this year and it has just been amazing! In fact, I want two more for next year! The blooms are medium size, but the growth is vigorous! We placed it on the side of a carport with lattice on the sides. It has already covered 2/3rds of the length. We also planted dublin bay and pearly gates, but their growth has been no match to skies! We may have to find them another home next spring, being as skies is taking over.
Just wanted to give this idea to you, as we have been astonished with the beauty and vigor of this rose!

Skip Joseph's Coat and Golden Showers. There are many newer varieties that are a HUGE improvement on both of those -- the only thing those two have going for them is they are available cheap up front. Don't waste your money though -- you will be much better off to buy one of the newer, more floriferous and more disease resistant varieties.

I liked the Brite Eyes and Sky's the Limit suggestions. And, even though it is an older variety, I also like Autumn Sunset -- a widely available yellow orange sport of Westerland that would be good for your zone and has the same general colors as Joseph's Coat. Or go with the original Westerland if you want more orange and less yellow.

Climbers that perform well for me are Lemon Meringue, Night Owl, Iceberg, Flutterbye and Westerland. I have pics of a couple of those below. Night Owl is very big and bushy and I planted next to Golden Showers becuase Golden is kind of scraggly looking to me. Iceberg has spread well and gets really tall/long. Flutterbye's colors vary with each bloom and as the bloom ages. All of these are pretty resistant to black spot.

Hi, I recieved a joseph's coat for Mother's Day. It seems to be doing great where I put it and growing great. My dummy question is I have never had a climbing rose, and not sure about what I should do for the training. It is planted next to a tall fence, and close to the corner of the house. So....
Also if anyone could help me. I have a rose from last year. Dont remember the name. Large red rose that blooms on new growth. It was great last year but this year I am having a problem that I blamed on the weather. The pedals outer edges look horrible. I thought maybe the wind and rain ( we had a lot this spring and early summer)but I notice that it is still happening and saw some already forming on some buds. Any idea what is going on? Please help a newbe out, my grandmother's are all passed away and mom dosent know anything about plants, flowers , etc

For a yellow you could try Scent from Above and Social Climber for a pink. Both are Jackson and Perkins roses, both are very vigorous and would definitely cover your fence quickly. They do get some black spot though. I planted 3 of each last spring and by late summer they were growing through the trellis and were probably 6 ft high.

I am in the process of growing stuff to cover a 5' chain link fence. I would NOT choose a climber for this; it will be too bare at the bottom. I have Abraham Darby in one spot and Buff Beauty in another. Both will climb if encouraged, sprawl if not shaped, and "shrubbify" if trimmed to do so. I am not sure how they would do in zone 6, but here in zone 8 (Portland, OR) they should be plenty big enough and full enough to cover the fence pretty nicely. I have also added a Clematis armandii near the Buff Beauty. It has some more architecture (the roof over a carport-like addition) and deck above that to climb onto.

If you use climbers, I would plan on some lower plantings down below.
