Joseph's Coat grumpy

This winter my Joseph's Coat, now three years old I believe, seemed to do really well. Almost no cane die back whatsoever.

About three weeks ago I trimmed off some of the dead wood. Since then we have had a lot of evil cold nights, around 28 or lower. With more on the way this weekend. I have noticed since then a LOT of cane die back. Not just the tips but whole canes.

If I have to buy a new one to replace this one I can accept that. My question is it dying back because I trimmed it too early or owing to some of the crazy temperature fluctuations that have characterized spring in our county.

Thank you.

Kate
