Yes, Kate is right. The only way to make a climbing rose climb is to tie it to something, trellis, wires attached to the wall or some kind of support. Roses do not climb like vines. They do not have tendrils to hold on to things to enable them to climb on their own. And be patient. Climbers can take anywhere from 3 to 5 years to do any real climbing. It takes them that long to build a big enough root ball to be able to send water and nutrients up to tall climbing canes. So it will not send up those very long canes until it has that big root ball. Also there is some evidence that the plant will not send up those canes if it does not know there is support. So tie those shorter canes to the support right away. And, spreading the canes out more horizontally will give you more bloom. If they are all just going straight up you'll only get bloom at the top. If you spread them out sideways the main canes will then send up more canes called laterals and each one of those will have blooms. The more horizontal, the more laterals, the more blooms.

The Garden Safe product is just neem oil. I wouldn't expect it to burn in cool weather. (It doesn't do much good either.) However, in the original set of pictures, I saw an orange patch that might be spray burn, but it was out of focus. #3, as Olga says, is blackspot. Notice the fringy edges (very fringy in this case). Smaller spots on other leaves could be nascent blackspot (not sure). The rose must be very susceptible, so if you decide to keep it, you will need to spray with a very effective fungicide beginning with leaf-out in spring. The black lumps are puzzling. From a distance, it looks like some type of gall, but the angular, horned look is weird. If the texture is woody, I'd say it is a gall. Sometimes these have larval insects inside. I would prune below these. What do others think? The rotting brown sprouts probably emerged in winter and were frozen.

Rev d'Or did very well in Earthkind trials for Texas gardens, so may do well for you, too. I like a modern red climber in my garden - Dublin Bay. It reblooms well - no fragrance, though. It can definitely take the heat. Anita

I will bet that if you trace the stems that those hot pink blooms are on, they will emerge from the plant below the graft joint. Many hybrid roses are grafted on a root stock known as 'Dr. Huey'. They are not "own root" roses. (Older heirloom varieties more often grow on their own roots - like the 'Cecile Brunner' in my yard) Dr. Huey produces blooms the same color as those you show in the photo. My understanding is that if you cut the hybrid graft back too far, you will have this problem. I think you are stuck with the pink blooms at this point. :-( Actually, I have a spare Iceberg bush that I can cut back and ship if you have something you would like to trade!
