I assume you meant it was labeled Joseph's Coat, since it certainly looks like it.

Do not cut it back. Climbers should be pruned only for dead wood and occasionally, when they are big, to shape them.

Roses take a break after their first flush. Leave it alone. Water once or twice a week, depending on heat (stick your finger in deep; if its dry water, if it's wet do not). If you haven't fertilized, you could do so now. Then again in the fall. If it starts getting yellowed, blackspotted leaves, decide whether you want to live with Blackspot (it won't kill the rose) or you can spray a fungicide every two weeks.

Cutting it back will have made it spend energy growing, instead of blooming. However, no rose blooms continuously - even the best bloom in flushes, every 3-4 weeks or so. What you can do between flushes, in addition to the above which is good advice, is deadhead it. Snap off the dead flowers, or parts of dead flowers, so it will not try to make rose hips, and will bloom again faster. Just snip off (or you can use your fingers) the finished flower parts - do not cut back the canes at all.

catrose, it WAS labeled as a Don Juan. We didn't realize the mistake till I googled it and then came across the Joseph's Coat while looking at rose bushes in Google Images.
I misspoke. My husband said he didn't cut it back, he pinched off the spent blooms. He had read, as you guys have suggested, to not cut it back. Thank you for your answers. It's been about month since it last bloomed. Will continue to watch it. It IS producing some new leaves.

That behavior is normal. The rose flowers, you cut off the flowers when they are finished, the plant rests a bit, then it grows new stems with flowers on them and the process repeats.

As the rose gets older and more established and strong, there will be more flowers and faster repeat. When young, the plant is not as strong and new growth and bloom is much slower. The young plant is growing a good strong root system at the same time and must conserve its energy for that.

So our Joseph's Coat rose bush has been in the ground for 2 years. I'm sad to say that it's never bloomed like it did right after we bought it. The blooms have been much smaller, not has healthy looking, and instead of the wide range of beautiful colors, they're mostly orange. What fertilizer do you guys suggest? We've used Bayer 3n1.

I grew a Joseph's Coat on a wall, and grew two on an arbor. My experience was about like yours, but I kept them for many years. Finally, I gave them all away and put two Chocolate Sundaes in their spots. The Chocolate Sundaes don't repeat much and have no fragrance, but the bloom form is pretty, and the color is one I love having in this garden, so I put up with them.
I don't feed often, but when I do I use Rosetone or fish emulsion.

Give it a good dose of liquid fertilizer (miracle grow for roses is a good one). If you gave it bayer six weeks or more ago a good dose of miracle grow will get it blooming again quickly. Be sure to give the correct dose and be careful not to add too much. Just follow the directions carefully. Nothing works as fast or noticeably as liquid fertilizer in my opinion. In about a week it will sprout new growth on every stem resulting in more flowers.

Also, more rose bushes will give you more flowers. If you had a few bushes you'll be sure to have at least one of them in flower all the time. (That's a good way to become a rose addict!) lol

Thanks for the advice. We haven't done anything to it this year (as far as feeding). We've had more rain this year than the past two years combined! There are quite a few blooms but they're nothing like they were the first time they bloomed after we planted it, they're small, not as healthy and not the array of colors (that makes it a "Joseph's Coat...coat of many colors").
We actually tried to find another bush or two. No one has them. My SIL found some online from Home Depot. Might order a couple more :)

Can someone tellme what to treat this rosebush with please? Some of them have spots, are healthy. It's on some of the leaves as well.

My Joseph's coat bloomed gloriously with loads of flowers but not a a lot of leaves. Now that it is done the plant looks almost bare. Is something wrong with it? I live in zone 7-B.
