Joseph's Coat Rose on Fortuiana?

Has anyone seen this anywhere?

I checked CoolRoses and Nelsons and don't see that they have them on line (have not called yet)..

Wondered if anyone is growing this incredible rose in Central FL.?!

I got mine 2 years ago from K&M roses, on fort.... am not happy w/it, it has hardly grown and has only had abt. 2-4 blooms all that time, I don't think it is suited to Fla..... sally

Good to know. I am brand new to roses! Pix of Joseph's Coat are so beautiful though. Do you mind giving me a few recommendations? And do you frow all of your roses in full sun there? I am originally from St. Pete.

What is going on is that you just planted it 6 weeks ago, and the poor thing is trying to grow roots while simultaneously supporting all of that top growth. However, it looks mainly fine. If it was mine I would cut off ONLY the canes or parts of canes that are brown and obviously completely dead. Then I would leave it alone for at least one year, so that it can grow roots and get established. Next Spring, when it stops freezing, you can prune it a bit. Jackie

Joseph's coat can be a very beautiful rose but in the PNW it does best as a large shrub. This rose needs loving care and does better in rich or clay type soil. It also requires extra fertilizer. Yes, it is prone to BS but it still is worth spraying with a dormant oil and suphur type in the early spring before it starts to bud out . Then again in the late spring but using the weaker summer solution. Pinata grows best as a large shrub and looks better in partial shade (which it tolerates) to perserve the different colours of the flowers. They also last longer too. I didn't like the fade out and discoloration of Pinata until I grew it in partial shade and there is definitly a difference. I honestly don't think either one of these climbers will droop or even bend as their cans are quite stiff. Friesinger Morgenrote also is happiest as a large shrub and again has stiff canes but is still a good climber. In my garden the repeat was not generous.

Hi Vela! I can send you the cuttings. Just need to know where to send them. Also, and maybe someone can give input on this, but I had an attack of thrips and I have sprayed my roses down with Garden Safe pest spray, but I just worry that if I send a cutting I will be sending you some of my pests. Can anyone give any input on this? Is it a valid concern? Thanks, Emily

Most roses like full-sun, or at least 6 hrs. of sun, pref. morning so they can dry off from dew/sprinklers, etc. they need lots of compost, stuff like milorganite, Black Kow, Black Hen, Alfalfa pellets ( make sure there is no salt in them) , I have mostly OGRs-antique now, the modern roses are prone to Black Spot and I no longer spray... if you are near a local Rose Society, they have experience and people who have roses, can help a lot.... I try and get roses grafted on Fortuniana, because of the nematodes in the soil here... but hard to find OGRs on Fort., but most China roses do fine own-root, also the Earthkind roses... then the Noisettes and Antique Teas, and Bermuda roses, there is a lot of info. on-line as well, just Google 'roses for Fla.'--- good luck, sally

I'm sorry for the stupid question, but what exactly is Joseph's Coat? I've seen that name attached to very thorny single flowered climbers, floribundas, and one that looks, from the photos, like a hybrid tea, so I'm confused. Some have single colored flowers in various colors and some have a variegated bloom, too.

Joseph's Coat is a modern climber, very pretty multi-colored bloom.... you can Google is and lots of Nurseries have pics so you can see it... saally

The thing that I remember about Joseph's Coat is that it is supposed to have wicked thorns. It was recommended as a guard barrier--something to put in front of a window if you don't want people crawling in.

Personally, I wouldn't get it if it doesn't have fortuniana rootstock. As stated above most roses get their roots eaten by nematodes if they are not on this rootstock. The one exception to that is Louise Phillipe. Other old garden roses may do well on their own rootstock however.

My take on it is to just get it on Dr. Huey if you can find it for a reasonable price. You can then see how it does in your garden before spending a lot on a Fortuniana rose. If it starts to decline after several years due to nematodes and you still love it, get another on Fortuniana.

I've never personally removed a rose due to nematode damage, but I've removed plenty for other reasons. Given the choice I'd get it on Fortuniana, but I'd rather have a good variety than the perfect rootstock.

I have been replacing my modern hybrid-tea roses gradually, mostly because of blackspot defoliation and my no-longer spraying... with OGRs-Antiques, some are own-root... most are on Fort. I understand that the China do well own-root and have several, Ducher, Spice, Crepuscule, Louis Phillip, Champney's Pink, and several more, and guess I'll find out how they fare own-root....I think if that's all one can find, own-root...it's better to go ahead and enjoy it... and if the garden has a lot of compost and mulch, nematodes stay away, they thrive in sand.. try and keep a thick organic mulch at all times, and it pays off... the Fort. roses are more expensive, and by mulching, most of the own-root do quite well.... sally
