For future years you might want to try just collecting a little seed for propagating and leaving the rest standing for the birds and insects. It not only provides food and shelter for wildlife but the dried plant material helps protect the crown of the plant and the soil. I always think the sturdier stems like echinacea are quite pretty with little snow caps on them during the winter. While eating the birds will drop some seed that will germinate too. In the spring you can cut back or pull away the plant debris and chop up some to use as mulch. Too much mulch though and the fallen seeds won't germinate and grow. In the winter use the seed you collected or bought and wintersow them in a weed free potting mix in the proper containers (see the wintersowing forum faq or wintersown.org if unfamiliar with method). They will have much higher germination rates than scattered seed and you can protect them until they are a little bigger and sturdier. Then you can use these seedlings as a guide to help you see what in your wildflower bed is desirable and what is a weed if you aren't familiar with the seedlings. You can use them to plug any holes in the bed or plant them elsewhere if the bed is filling in nicely on its own. This method has worked pretty well for me so far.

I on the other hand will lead you in the opposite direction and recommend leaving them in communal trays since this is when they start to fatten up. But I do agree that they can begin battling for resources. I have always believed in keeping seedlings together in a communal pot until 12 to 14 weeks of age. Transplanting them too early can stunt them just as well. To answer your question Phil, I do not recommend sowing them in individual containers. Newborns like to be in close contact with others. Christina welcome to the funhouse :) 1- for growing from seed I try to do a mostly inorganic mix - propagation pumice, horticultural charcoal and some akadama or coir. If you're going with a soil of a high organic content and you're not 100% on it's origins microwave it to be safe. Ive seen lots of different mediums used. 2- I've seen some expert growers keep their seeds sealed for 3-4 months but they've often sterilized their soil and applied a fungicide so it can go on that long without problems. Otherwise I say at most 3-4 weeks sealed off or when germination rates are good. 3- Ideal time to sow is when you can get a nice temperature difference and cool nights (your 50f is perfect) ! Haworthia seeds do not have a very long shelf life, if you want store them for a short while a dark, dry, cool environment is best IMO. 4- Days ranging from 60-80f is fine so long as they're able to drop temp wise at night and keep them out of direct sun or they'll roast in that container. 5- fungicides, that depends. If you plan on keep them sealed for several months then yes, otherwise no.
