I applaud you efforts and hard work. One of the problems doing this sort of thing i.e. using the internet as source material, is that you don't know if the original source is correct. I frequently find grave errors in advise or information about plants on reputable university sites. Sometimes they get their information from another web site and just repeat the incorrect info. There are so many myths and errors that are perpetuated this way.

I did a quick look at your site and found one such error. The source had it wrong. There is no valid taxon Majorana hortensis. Marjoram is Origanum majorana. You might consider consulting a horticultural reference book or two, written by botanists and taxonomists, to check for accurate botanical information. Otherwise, I like having a source for growing information, individual experiences etc. like you are providing.

Thanks for the comments, francescod. I try to keep only valid taxa as primary entries, but allow a bit more latitude in synonym definition (you'll notice that Majorana hortensis is listed as a synonym of the primary entry for Origanum majorana). Unfortunately, any reference book is bound to be out of date relatively quickly - which is why I tend to use GRIN as my primary source. It's tricky to keep up with all the reclassifications, though... And GRIN isn't comprehensive, so there I often have to deduce the validity of a taxon by the frequency with which it appears in web references, for example scientific paper quotations. Not exact, to be sure, but I try :-)

Wow! Rob you've put a lot of time and effort into this. No site is perfect, so I say, keep up the good work!. I'm currently taking the MG training and we are told over and over again that our first choice for info is always to be University sites. However just last night, a couple of us pointed out a couple of errors in some of the training material to the instructor... so you do have to be vigilant.
