What should I do?,,bareroot planted now a problem

Hi, I planted 2 bare root Z.Drouhins (about a month ago)(both in same location about 3+ ft aprt),,,one doing great. Other one as I've posted on before, first started out with leaves on it that were drooping. Advised to cut them off, I did. Well, some canes started to go dark brown from the cut point toward the bud union. Read some more and thought I'd better cut that part off and use glue on the ends to prevent cane borers etc. Did that 2 days ago and now the dead looking ends starting again.

What does this mean and should I do anything about it? Thanks from a Newbie,,,,Nicole

Nicole, where did you purchase them?

Since one is doing well, and the other is crashing, perhaps you might want to alert the vendor of the situation.

They came from Green Thumb Intl. that is a really good nursery here. I'll grant you I kept them both really well hydrated and I did have to tear out this area where they would go AND I took a non performing rose that was in that hole out. I pretty much dug the whole area out, heavily amended the area, got the fine root hairs out too so I don't know if it's the "not supposed to put a new rose in an old hole' thing or it's just taking longer to come around. I will say I did sneak and left 2 little leaflets on the bare root (for an experiment) and took off all the rest, the ones that were drooping, so I just said 'okay, I'll let it put all it's energy into root production etc." I figured I could remove the 2 I left on if they drooped, which they didn't. They still green, still sticking out like they should etc. I'm learning fast, but now that I started to get into this, I'm surprised all the other bare roots I've planted in my life made it! Maybe I'm just paranoid since I really want both to go well and the other one is thriving. The other one does get a little more sun that the one in question so who knows why. Should I just wait it out? It doesn't look like it's dying but it could be better. Do all bare roots, when you do the 45 degree angle cut for shape, yourself, have this happen to the canes? I probably shouldn't have done that. Thx, Jeri!!

What do you do now? Have patients, tend to the weeds, and watch for pests. In my opinion, you probably want to water two or three times per week for the first week, then down to twice a week for the next week or two then, as mudflapper says, once a week should be just fine unless it gets hot. I would increase the frequency of the watering for these first few weeks only because your seedlings need to develop their roots for a bit. However, you should be checking on your soil moisture several inches down. If it still quite moist don't water! When you do water, make sure you are watering deeply (ensure that the water is soaking the soil down to six or eight inches), then trust that the roots will get there. Have patients! Trust the slow release of your fertilizer, but watch for anything strange with your plants, especially off colors. If you get anything that is off color, check back here. If you start to see pests, take a picture and check back here. If other strange things begin to pop up, check back here. Have patients! You will, most likely, start to see some positive changes in many of your seedlings in a few days and most of them within a week. You will see some really dramatic changes at about two to three weeks. Steve Oh, did I mention that you should be patient? It's difficult, but try.

Hi dark lady Nahh nothing wrong at all The air temps arnt as cold as they should be here either As you mentioned you had just planted em the soil dug was also warmed up too.. The roots know what to do and when to do it. Warmer fall days are not in our control. I know your not ferting but do be on the look out for PM and fall BS ( if you have this type of rose plant ) Indian summer is here too but it wont last much longer. This week in climate from Zone 6 Several morings of frosted dew Our coldest night 27, hottest mid day with full sun 78. Every tree is now bare. Two short snow spittings over the last three weeks.In the garden:I too have had some broken buds by the missing tree leaves providing some added full sun times from the missing shade and bonus higher heat, They won't even be fair if I leave em on to long. As of last week end they have no bussiness doing this late season trick in this zone. I still see some of em budding and........ I cut em off. Bareroot perennials & plants, can I put them out now?

Hey there! I've not grown perenials but annuals. The final frost date for our area is around April 15th. You definitely should transition them for about a week. Bring them out in the shade for an hour, then a couple of hours, then a half day, gradually moving them into the sun. This way they don't go into shock. If you wait a week, then do that next week, you'll be planting them in mid-April. Good luck!

Many of my neighbours have had sewage problems, now what should I do?

"What's really sad is that they are your neighbors, and you haven't ever just said hi?" Well, for the first part, they live further down the street, maybe 20-22 houses down to be more precise, so they're not really close neighbours, and for the second part, I work on evening shifts, leaving home at 2 o'clock and I come back usually around 12:45, so when I leave they are still at work and when I come back they're probably sleeping. When they are home in the morning then I'm sleeping. I did however speak with my second door neighbour, who confirmed he really just renovated his upstairs bathroom. Also, It is pretty obvious they did have sewer problems; I have seen plumbers replace their sewer lines from the street to their houses, and lots of drywall, flooring and carpeting went into dumpsters. On two houses, the city even got involved and parts of the street were opened up to perform work down below. So, I might be wrong, but I think it's safe to say there's a 90% chance if I go see them, if they don't tell me to fly off, they will tell me they had sewer problems. Perhaps I could try to get a hold of them during weekends and ask them about the specific reason why they needed the work done, but I thought someone on this forum might already have a clue. I will however ask one or two good plumbers for their opinions.
