Rogue Valley Roses has a category for thornless roses and many of the hybrid musks show up on it. One of those may work. I think it's wonderful that you're planning a memorial garden for Loki :)

Great Maiden's Blush is really popular in your area. ZD takes a while to establish. Peggy Martin and Veilchanblau are thornless also.

brhgm, cheers for advice - can't find peggy martin anywhere but henri martin is a lovely moss rose which ought to fit the bill. As the chainlink is only 2m high, i think veichenblau might cause it to collapse.
Mad Gallica (great name)AG is a good possibility - i love the wichuranas for their foliage and flexibility.
Lavender Lassie has her finger on it with the hybrid musks - I have been meaning to get one before Beales sale is over! I am finding this quite hard - if there was a rose called 'little cat' I would get it in a heartbeat - it is really difficult picking a rose which has personal meaning as well as pure desire. Perhaps I should not think too much about choices and let fate take a hand. Often, keeping an open mind bears surprising fruit.

I don't know if they sell this in your area, but Rogue Valley Roses has a sweet little rambler called Bleu Magenta. It has tiny blossoms, with no repeat bloom, but it's charming...a mixture of pinks, blues, lavenders, etc. I ordered one for a little arch in my fairy garden. There's a picture of it on RVR's website :)

Sorry. Forgot to mention it's thornless. I picked out all thornless roses for anywhere the kids play or walk under, or close to the house for painting/repairs. I chose Bleu Magenta for it's beautiful color combination, thornless, and small flowers. It's a small arch and I wanted something that would work with my gallicas. Hopefully, it will seem "magical" when the roses change color in the fairy garden :)

There are handful of "blue" ramblers Graham Stuart Thomas mentions approvingly in his book on antique roses. Here's the entry for Bleu Magenta:
This rose reached me from the Roseraie de l'Haÿ near Pairs, but I have been unable to trace the name anywhere. This is unfortunate, since it is the largest in flower and the richest in colour of the purplish ramblers. Fully double flowers in dense clusters, darkest violet-crimson fading to dark parma-violet and grey, with an occasional white fleck. Practically scentless. Shining dark green leaves on nearly thornless green wood. An effective garden plant. About 15 feet. The last to flower of the purple ramblers.

It's apparently available from a Dutch grower.

It's a lavender-pink color. It's supposed to be nearly thornless, with 8' long arching canes. In England Beales is supposed to sell it:

you can find a European source for it!

Night Owl

The flowers are purple, and single or semi-double.

According to commenters this remontant rambler is available in Europe (including England):

Perennial Blue.

York rose - I love R.Bella - in fact, i really like all the cinnamoneae roses. I amordering it along with schoeners nutkana and also Ghislaine de feligonde as so many of you have commected favourably on this lovely little rambler.

Bleu Magenta is scentless to me. I love Alexandar Girault which has a light scent and is very disease resistant.

I envy you. Moss roses don't like our climate. Peggy Martin, the rose that survived Katrina and a bulldozer at my home after Gustave, is often mislabled as Seven Sisters in the U.S. If you can't find it in the UK, Seven Sisters or any hybrid multiflora will do like Carnea, Veilchenblau or Seven Sisters. You may consider Dorothy Perkins and Excelsa for flexible caned roses.

i can't find peggy martin in any of my rose books - what is it like?
I am counting the days till the end of Peter Beales sale (31st March) when I will be able to relax for another year after all the lusting.

According to HelpMeFind "Peggy Martin" is a found rose from the wreckage of flooded New Orleans in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath. At least one of the more experienced commenters there thinks the rose is probably actually Climbing Pinkie, a sturdy rose that was once very popular in the American South, but now is only available from rose specialist nurseries (although it is still a sturdy rose that grows well).

It's purple(but not a climber), but what about The Prince. Didn't you say that you referred to Loki as a little prince?

Also not a climber, but Harkness has a rose called Fairy Prince which is a red polyantha. I don't know anything about it, but is available in the UK according to HMF.

A climber that is coral-red (not the vermilion/orange you suggested) is Tantau's climbing floribunda called Piccolo - its registration name is TANolokip (notice 'Loki' is embedded in there). HMF also says it's available in the UK.

It's not Climbing Pinkie. Climbing Pinkie has thorns and is not nearly as aggressive. Climbing Pinkie is also a found rose that may be a forgotten antique. Peggy Martin was an old found rose that Peggy Martin had growing on her fence in New Orleans. As is rose rustler tradition it is named after the person who owned the original rose bush. It survived 20 feet of water, but sadly Peggy Martin's home was ruined. She moved to Mississippi. Cuttings were made and given to Chamblees, the Antique Rose Emporium and other vendors to sell. One dollar per plant of the proceeds goes to the Greater Houston Community Foundation. My Peggy Martin survived being crushed by a bulldozer after Gustave.

I am sorry for your loss of your dear pet cat, it is obvious how much you love her.
As for roses, for a rich re-blooming purple rose, I think you could do no better than "Reine des Violettes" it is not like most H.P.s in that it's bloom size is smaller, c. 3 inches wide, and the bloom style shows a pertness that the larger blooming Hybrid Perpetual roses which produce large "cabbage" shaped roses, don't show. It is of a rich purple color with violet-red hues, the red shows more in weeks of warm weather. It is also fragrant and smooth stemmed. R. D.V. has smooth whippy canes that are easy to train on an arbor, or peg down to the ground so that the entire cane is wreathed with roses. Of all the Old Garden Rose classes H.P.s are among the easiest to train or peg, because many of them have pliable canes. In Northern California its' canes grow to be c. 6-7 feet long, and arch over near the top. I don't know your climate zone, but I'd expect it to grow to c. 5 feet tall in summer if you must hard prune in winter. It is also a graceful plant with pretty foliage.
"Renae" is a pink rose with lilac shading and mostly thornless. The fragrance is alluring when it shows up in the right weather, it reminds me of a blend of floral scents with an end scent note of watermelon. It grows to be a short climber where I live, c. 6-7 feet tall. "Renae" has a growth habit and foliage which are similar to that of a Hybrid Musk.
I grow 'Lavender Dream" and it is a big bushy branching plant that can be grown against a fence, but is not a true climber. In Northern California it grows to be c. 5' feet tall in summer, if hard pruned in winter. It is about 95 % pink and 5% lilac, here but in a cooler climate the lavender hue could be a bit stronger.

Oh Luxrosa, thanks for reminding me about RDV. I have always liked this rose and the smoothness of stem is a bonus. My daughter's cat, Josie, is a fearless climber and would ramble about the pergola happily but the couple of times Loki attempted to follow(clumsily), he got pricked by Madame Gregoire's thorns and retreated quicksmart. However, he would happily loaf on the wall where Zephirine Drouhin grew. So, I think I am going to go for an overdose of pinky purples with RDV, Schoener's nutkana and Zephirine Drouhin. If I muck about with the compost bins, I could maybe fit R.Bella too. There is about 7.5m of chainlink to cover. A million thanks for your thoughtful and supportive suggestions. Cheers, Suzy
