Any suggestions for red climber?
Comments (12)Thank you very much for your advices and pictures. It looks like Dublin Bay is a very strong candidate. Blaze, Dynamite and other are also interesting. Does anyone grow "All Ablaze"? It has interesting parents, Don Juan and Trumpeter. I have seen Trumpeter in Rose Garden in Portland, always covered with many orange red flowers. The Portland's Rose Garden has three red climbing roses, Dortmund, Don Juan and Altissimo. Dortmund is impressive there, but the other two roses looks mediocre. The rose on the last picture may be Don Juan -- my has the same grow habbit, but is darker (almost maroon color), and some of the flowers turn black before opening. Does anyone know why? Thanks again, Marek...See Moreoops- here's a larger photo. red climber z 5-who am I?
Comments (15)It looks a lot like Gruss an Teplitz. It will get at least 10' tall however, since it was before. It looks a lot like Dr. Huey. It has weathered -10 degrees and likely -15 degrees. While this was a mild winter, it has been around for at least 9 years. How much longer before that, I don't know since I just remember Mrs. Clarke pointing it out to me when she was still in her nineties. I can't think who would have planted it for her, though, so it may have been around for a lot longer before I noticed it....See MoreHelp me think of a deep pinky red purple rebloomer
Comments (23)Can you do a climber? Field of the Woods (Rhode Island Red) is exquisite. Munstead Wood another one if you aren't Austin adverse. Souvenir de Francois Gaulain is an unusually mauve red tea and Princesse de Sagan is crimson in cooler weather. Indigo is a deep pinky here but so far no signs of red/purple. It defoliates and refoliates pretty quickly though. Not a romantic name but Flamenco Rosita aka Ivor's Rose is the best deep pinky red with a touch of mauve that I own. Quartered blooms like a bourbon. Covered in blooms like a poly. Big and healthy. Takes pruning. Bred by your own countryman Peter Beales. A SUPER rose here. Definitely cool tones. Verdun is a nice cool tone poly here. Louis Phillipe is a great crimson china. Susan...See MoreDark climbers...
Comments (13)In answer to your query " means down to (not up to) minus 20 Celsius/ minus 4 Fahrenheit?" yes :) - its just a difference in phrasing.. HMF is great, but it is dependent on user input ...being addicted to encyclopedias and looking up stuff, I tend to use HMF a lot, just for the pleasure of browsing through it; its possible to search for users in your area,( if they specify it) then you can see what they grow (if they list it) and even send them queries. From memory you don't get any more information about zones with a paid membership, but there is often a bit more about ancestry (that is if the breeders supplied more info than "seedling x seedling grr) What it is great for is being able to search through categories. You can specify as many as you like...colour, growth habit, height, remontantcy, class , zone, - its great for narrowing down the perfect rose. I have to confess I'm not currently subscribed ( unemployed so I can't afford to renew membership ) but it was worth it for the use I got out of it, and continue to, and definitely worth it considering I would miss it badly if it wasn't available ! :)...See Moresemiplenus
