Sorry for the mistake in the first sentence. I often think of these two as happy sisters so Radio Times was on my mind along with Sharifa while I was typing. Another glorious warm pink rose. They definately belong in the same bed together, although Radio Times has a taller bush, so put her behind Sharifa.

Many of the older Austin roses are quite cold hardy due to the Old Garden Rose Genetics that is only one or two generations removed in their breeding. Mr. Austin has also used some Rugossa roses in his breeding programs which helps with hardiness. My personal list of hardiest Austin varieties is: St. Cecilia, Mary Rose and her sports,Redoute and Winchester Cathedral, Crocus Rose, Lilian Austin, The Reeve, The Mayflower, Saint Swithun, Teasing Georgia, Eglantyne. All of the roses named above survive and do well here without winter protection. Though aside from St. Cecilia and the Mayflower, the rest will have significant die back if not protected or covered by snow. I grow other Austin varieties that are somewhat more tender, but still do very well for me here with winter protection. I plant all my roses with the bud union three to four inches below the soil level. I cut my more tender rose plants back in mid to late November to approximately 12 inches and then cover them with straw and leaves, because I do not have reliable deep snow cover. Generally the yellow and peach roses are more tender. Cheers, RRL

Rosecanadian, male dogs are definitely silly, especially with their excessive marking habits. Of all the bushes and shrubs in my garden, he has to pick a fragrant rose to piss on, on the same spot, several times a day. I have given up following him around trying to catch him spraying on Sharifa, and resort to hose sharifa down then shake her foliage to get rid of excess water droplets. I do love dogs in general, and mine is just a big softie. so gotta forgive him.

Sultry is your LoS on its own roots, or on Dr.H or Fortuniana? I ordered one on its own roots this year from DA and they sent me a grafted one by accident (they are sending me a replacement one this week). I'm not sure if I'll like it enough to order it on Fortuniana yet, knowing it will take up a lot of room. I grew it once before and it didn't bloom much and the blooms were very small for me. But I only had it for about six months. I moved it into the ground then it started getting really large (still no blooms) and I realized it wasn't a good spot for such a large rose so I moved it again and it didn't survive the second move (poor thing, was all my fault!). Anyways, something tells me she'll do better in partial shade and maybe on her own roots so she doest get so large. I dunno. We'll see. If she does well for me I may get her on Fortuniana. I have two Pat Austins though, on Fort and they do really well and they are a similar color.

Sharifa Asma is quite good - the smell is always there, and she keeps on blooming non-stop in my garden.

I wonder why David Austin chose the name, "Radio Times". The reason why I keep avoiding this rose is because of the name. I wish it was something more striking such as,
"True Love", or maybe just the name "Times" will do it for me.

Alas! I've decided to take out my one-year-old Sharifa and put in Yves Piaget... I've been so taken with light pink roses, I feel like I need a little more punch in my rather small garden. I hope I'm not making a big mistake. I'm at the point that I have to remove one to get one. I don't even have enough sunny spots for pots anymore. If only I had a second story balcony!

We grew Sharifa Asma for many years, and we have a cool climate. But I NEVER saw that much color in the blooms.
Lovely blooms, make no mistake, and a delicious fragrance, but always a pale, pale blush.
It is gone because the foliage mildewed here JUST enough to always look a bit ratty. But I realize that's not a problem everywhere.

I like Sharifa Asma a lot, in particular on account of her scent and general toughness. I think of her as a white rose with a tinge of pink, and that's fine with me.

We have two of them, and they are beautiful - which is why I bought a second. I agree that I don't see that much color either, but I usually start looking when it is hot out.

I have never triead Radio Times because of the name partly, and I also have had a problem with the name of Sharifa Asma (asthma???) It sounds like a medical problem to me. But I couldn't resist the rose. (Doesn't Radio Times have another name?)

I love Sharifa Asma. Very forgiving rose; last winter, all new growth on the one I have was severely damaged by a late frost. It came back without any problem and bloomed from summer to fall. The color depends on the temperature. I noticed that when I moved the pot that it is in to a shadier spot, the color is a true pink. When moved into full sun, the color bleaches out quickly to a pale blush. In the heat of summer, it is almost white after a couple of days. Nonetheless, a great and easy to grow rose.

Jumbojimmy, 'Radio Times' was chosen to honor the 70th anniversary of the British radio program guide of the same name. The link below is to a wikipedia article on the guide. I admit it doesn't make the name sound any more attractive. I just searched Helpmefind to see if the US has a 'TV Guide' rose. Fortunately, we don't.

Maybe next to Mr Darby. I think Sharifa is a beautiful name but I must admit "Asma" does twist my tongue a bit, I think she's from Saudi Arabia. They probably think my name is odd too! Brandy

Maybe it is pronounced with a softer 'a', not the broad flat 'a' in the word 'asthma'. With a bit of a stretch, one could almost imagine it as 'Princess Ozma'. That makes this rose a must for all Oz fans.

Mine is good but is so virused visitors say, "Hey, I didn't know there were roses with variegated foliage!" Anyone have a non-virused one? Where did you get it?

I'm not sure if my Sharifa is virused or not but it does have varigated leaves, especially in the spring (iron deficiency?) but she just gets better with time. She has to be 6' tall and just keeps putting out sweet-smelling blooms. She is a keeper!

Sharifa Asma is one of my favorites - the smell is incredible. But mine is more of a very light pink - blush.

Sharifa Asma have a really strong fragrance. Even as mature buds a few days before the petals unfurl ... they have a very strong old rose fragrance. BUT: I had to get rid of mine from my garden and plant them in my cutting garden. They suffered so badly from mildew! (In spite of heavy spraying!). And what was even worse: if the mature buds gets wet they ball! So not a rose for rainy climates. On dry days however; wonderful rose blooms!

The Princess Sharifa Asma is a member of the royal family of Oman, not Saudi Arabia. Rosefolly is correct on the pronunciation -- 'Ozma' rather than asthma.

In his catalogs, David Austin is careful to explain the names of all of his roses. One notable exception is 'Sharifa Asma', which has no explanation whatsoever. I wonder if the omission reflects a concern that an Arabic association might pose something of a backlash these days . . .

Try Heirloom Roses. They guarantee virus free stock and Sharifa is among their English Rose collection.

The color in the image that I posted earlier from Hortiplex isn't typical of Sharifa in full blazing sun during the summer. She is only this pink during the coolness of spring and autumn, although the color can be improved a little if given shade during the hottest part of the day. In all honesty I'm not picky about the color. I like the fade out to a pink tinged white ala Souvenir de la Malmaison, which reminds me of the finest pink pearls.

But what I like most about Sharifa (besides the AMAZING fragrance and lovely flowers) is the growth habit: upright yet slightly bushy, similar to a Portland. In my zone 6b garden Sharifa is a nice medium sized bush. As I mentioned in the first post, she is no Jolly Green Giant and fits nicely into my small garden.

David Austin classifies SHARIFA ASMA as one of his "Old Rose Hybrids". I concur because she reminds me a lot of Jacques Cartier/Marchesa Boccella, only with better fragrance and none of that notorious Portland crud (although she will get black spot in my region without spraying).

DISCLAIMER: If black spot is your biggest rose problem, and you have a no spray garden, then Marchesa Boccella is a better rose.

When I see the name "Radio Times" all I can think of is "Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane!" The interview show on NPR -- but I didn't think D. Austin would name a rose for that.

I have a young Sharifa too & flowers are more like a pinkish tinge to a creamy pale salmon. But frequent bloom right to frost last year & great scent.

Does anyone at all have this one for sale? Or offer cuttings? This last winter l lost my Sharifa Asma. Not to weather...but a huge mishap! ( My husband sprayed chemicals on all my potted roses to get rid of gnats ( no gnats were harmed....all my roses all of them! Died . I have replaced almost all . Sharif'a l cannot find. Please. Please. Anyone?

It's one of my favorite Austins. It's a tough, vigorous , shrubby plant with great rebloom and wonderful fragrance. It is seeming like a more bs resistant rose lately. I can see by my post above that my plant is 15 years old, grafted from Pickering. My own root one is about 3 to 4' tall. Does not do as well but it's in a tough spot.

This 6' or 7' plant is actually in a large pot but it's rooted through the hole.

I am really excited to have my first Sharifa Asma bloom, (many thanks to Feiy). As a virgin bloom, her fragrance already matches if not exceeds, Beverly, one of my most fragrant roses.
