Fall Update on 1st year No Spray Garden
Comments (30)JBCarr, I could not agree with you more about monoculture and especially with roses. I'm learning more about gardening than about roses although they will always be my first love. They shine much more when planted amoung other plants rather than with other roses. As I change my gardening habits, I'm keeping this in mind and replacing these monocultures with different shrubs. Just my opinion on gardening, no judgment call. I'm reminded of the story of Mrs. Wilmont's Ghost. Seems Mrs. Ellen (?) Wilmont, a gardener of some repute, was asked by many to come evaluate their gardens. Her assessment was almost always, not enough contrast, not enough diversity. A few weeks after her visit, the gardener noticed a number of sea hollies (a course looking, prickly perennial) sprouting in the bare spots in their garden. Mrs. Wilmont often carried seeds of this plant in her pocket to "help with the contrast and diversity." Len511, I wish my Felicia was doing well. She is bare caned; not pretty at all. Good luck! I hope yours continues to do well. And my Felicia is prone to sending up those long canes, but is too broad to be a climber. Jeri, I suspect weather is the greatest most uncontrollable factor in any garden. We've had years with drought but this year we've had above average rainfall, except for a dry August. Now, with all the hurricanes, our weather has turned wet again. Still, there is very little mildew compared to the last two years. I think most of the roses are going through "withdrawal" from chemical dependency. Some I know will never recover. I can only wait and see. Barbara...See MoreBest repeat, Septer'd Isle, Sharifa Asma
Comments (11)Thanks all. It sounds like Sharifa, Scepter'd or Tamora would fill the bill. I think a taller, but narrower bush might be better in that spot. Does anyone grow tamora in a hot climate. It says 3', but nothing stays 3' here, usually 5-6' which would work well there. Anyone for The Generous Gardener or St. Patrick? Thanks for all of your help. Judith and Harry, lovely pictures. What gorgeous roses you both grow. Nancy...See Moreown root source for Sharifa Asma?
Comments (5)I got three plants from Chamblees last winter. They were healthy looking when they arrived and have, by far, done the best of all my own-roots (with the possible exception of my Wise Portias from Amity). I was frankly nervous because Clair Martin had said they had to be babied for years in our climate but by midsummer they were sturdy 2' tall bushes loaded with flowers. I wouldn't hesitate to order from them....See MoreYour favorite Austin rose for the midwest
Comments (19)We have Golden Celebration, Gertrude Jekyll and The Prince, though I"m not 100% certain that last one is an Austin. Golden Celebration is leggy this year, with fewer blooms than last year, which I'm putting down to the wet spring we've had. Gertrude Jekyll is a gorgeous bloom -- but I wouldn't get it again if I had the choice. Gertrude peters out in the heat and barely blooms at all after the first flush. She sends up very long canes, but no buds. I just pegged my GJ to see if I'll get any more blooms that way. The Prince is a nice bush, but IMO, the bloom is a nasty color. I wouldn't have it again, unless the only feature I cared about was fragrance. It smells wonderful. CHARLES DARWIN -- I had one for three weeks this spring. It was a BLACKSPOT MAGNET -- the worst I've ever seen, when no other roses in the bed had a touch of the disease. In one 8-hour period, the entier bush went from green to black-and-yellow. The nursery refunded my money ($35!!) because so many of their Austin roses had come down with terrible blackspot, too. They told me they won't use that grower ever again. I replaced Charles Darwin with one Knockout and one Bill Warriner -- not Austins. I think I'm through with Austins. I think they're overrated....See MoreKrista_5NY
