Hello! I'm New! I need Rose Suggestions! some pics too

Hey everyone- just wanted to say hey- I started my 'rose collection' last year in an apartment and just got a house with a decent size yard - my first thoughts were what roses am i going to plant! I am in NC with about 4-6 hours of direct morning/noon sun in the back yard- I am thinking about climbers on the fence (wooden fence) and maybe some tea roses else where- suggestions are welcomed! I want something that is hardy and somewhat resistant to disease- Maybe Crepuscule and new dawn?? these are pics of my potted roses from last year- i had peach and pink in two separate containers and somehow got these- which i then transferred- they are miniature start out real vibrant then fade to a real pretty light peach with pink outline. Is cross-germination common with miniatures? sorry if that's a dumb ?- like I said I am a newbie! ok thanks guys for any suggestions and happing gardening!

New Dawn is still one of my absolute favorite roses. She gets pretty darned big and thorny is my only complaint. She's also not fragrant, but I have so many fragrant roses now, nobody's gonna notice ;)

She's not the best on disease, but she's good enough that I never spray her. I do see some Blackspot here on her. It's never been bad enough to look embarrassing. Her blooms are my idea of perfection, in person. It's funny, because I usually prefer a different bloom form. The color and texture of the petals is part of why I love her. Just a gorgeous rose.

Oooh there are only ten billion others you can try, too :D Crepescule is so lovely! I don't grow her yet, though.

Another climber I adore here, since you like Crepuscule, is Royal Sunset, a climber with similar colors. She's just an easy, gorgeous rose here. That one is quite fragrant!

My new most favorite small rose is called 'Morey's Pink' or 'Morey's Pink China'. No scent, but she's just so pretty. And completely carefree for me.

I'm in the Piedmont, btw.

This is my grandmothers recipe for dill pickles. She did it this way for 50 years, and learned it from her mother. I have added comments for my own benefit to the original instructions. I scale this recipe as needed. If I have just 3-4 cucumbers in the morning, I can just one quart. Smaller amounts take shorter times. I grow my own cucumbers, garlic and dill. As the other poster noted, use wide-mouth quart jars if possible. My grandma called it pickling salt, but it is canning salt at the grocery store. Once you jump in and do a practice jar or two you will get the hang of this in nothing flat. Just like falling out of bed in the morning. * Exported from MasterCook * Garlic Dill Pickles Recipe By : Hazel Berens Serving Size : 6 Preparation Time :1:00 Categories : Canning Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 24 pickling cucumbers -- * see note 12 cups water 6 cups white vinegar 1 cup pickling salt -- rounded 12 heads fresh dill 12 cloves garlic -- cut in half This recipe will make 6-8 quarts, depending upon size of cucumbers. If more than 6 quarts, increase amount of dill and garlic required. Wash cucumbers and remove 1/16-inch from blossom end. Place in a 5-gallon bucket with cold water and lots of ice cubes. Soak in ice water for at least 4 hours but no more than 8 hours. Refresh ice as required. Fill enamel canner with water and bring to a gentle boil; this will take at least an hour. Boil canning jars in canner. Process lids in simmering water for at least 10 minutes. Do not boil lids, as this will compromise the rubber seal. All we want to do is soften the seal. Combine water, vinegar and pickling salt in a large stock pot. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. This will take 20-30 minutes. Make sure pot is covered so that solution does not evaporate. When mixture has come to a boil, remove a jar from the boiling water, making sure all water has drained from the jar. Place 2 half-cloves of garlic and 1 head of dill in the jar. Add 3-4 cucumbers, leaving 1-inch headspace. Top with an additional 2 half-cloves of garlic and another head of dill. Using a canning funnel, fill the jar with hot vinegar mixture, leaving ½-inch headspace. If necessary, wipe jar top and threads clean. Place hot lid on jar and screw on ring a little more than finger tight. Place jar on rack to cool. You should hear the "tink" of the seal within a couple minutes. Repeat with remaining ingredients. After jars have cooled, test seals. Write date of canning on lid using Sharpie. Store in cool, dark place for at least 6-8 weeks. Refrigerate after opening. Pickles will keep for up to 2 years if stored in a cool dry place. This recipe will give a much crisper pickle than those processed with a hot water bath for 15-30 minutes. Fair enough. Soy based inks have VERY VERY VERY LOW levels of VOC's. :) Heck, even wood releases some VOCs as do some trees as they grow (turpenes, for example). Actually, the USDA says none, if you want to believe them. "Using more soy oil in the vehicle means that less pigment (black, blue, red, and yellow) is needed, because the soy oil provides a lighter vehicle," says Erhan. And soy-based printing inks contain no volatile organic compounds." Note this is an OLD article, 1995, so take it for what it's worth. Curious, what makes you think that ALL VOC's are "unsafe"? Assuming they hired a professional designer to do the model living room, what I see is that under the best of circumstances, that living room is awkwardly set up. In the model room, there is space for three, maybe 4 people to sit. Only one seat directly faces the TV set. Look at the furniture in that room. One small sofa or loveseat. One armchair. One TV stand. One end table. One large coffee table that was chosen to fill up the empty space in the center of the room to make it look more furnished. Imagine that room without the coffee table and it starts to look a lot like the OPÃ¯Â¿Â½s room. There are three lamps, one of which appears to block part of the TV. And then at least 4 plants, to make the room appear more furnished and welcoming. I think they did a wonderful job making that room look open and inviting, and hiding the more obvious flaws in the design of the room. The roomÃ¯Â¿Â½s layout simply doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t function well. Either you have the sofa on the wall in the model room, and then you have a hard time watching TV, or you put the sofa on the window wall so you can see the TV set, and then you lose the view out the windows and have an awkward layout. OP, itÃ¯Â¿Â½s not you. ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s the room. Working with the furniture you have, the first thing IÃ¯Â¿Â½d do is take out the two small chairs. They donÃ¯Â¿Â½t work with the rest of the furniture. Then IÃ¯Â¿Â½d try to put the sofa on the wall where it is in the model room, and buy a table top TV swivel stand so that you could easily watch TV from there. Move the blue chair to the same position as the woven chair in the model picture and place an end table between the sofa and the chair. Down the line, look for a coffee table similar to the one in the model pictureÃ¯Â¿Â½glass or Lucite to keep the space looking open, and slightly oversized to fill the space better. And maybe a smaller unit to hold the TV.

Hi Oldcrafty, I'm very happy to help in any way I can but there are two things I don't have a lot of experience with and they are (1) mosaics using glass and (2) the amazing extremes of weather that a lot of people on this site experience. eg We are in the middle of Winter where I live in Australia and the temperature at the moment is 25 degrees celcius. All of my outdoor mosaics don't have the problems associated with freezing etc..... That, I'm sure is a whole different ball game! However, to answer your question, pva glue is the opaque white glue that is quite cheap to buy.(in Australia anyway) It's used a lot in woodwork and is water soluable. I only use it to keep the ceramic tile pieces adhered to the mesh. It is definately not strong enough to be the 'final' mosaic adhesive. It's a little tricky when different countries call things a different name. For example, we don't have a product called Thinset. From reading lots of info on the internet, I've deduced it's equivalent to our cement based tile adhesive. I could be wrong (I'd love to be corrected if I am) If the thinset you are using is the same as our cement based tile adhesive, then I have used it a lot in outside projects (some verticle ones) and find it is just fine. Some projects have been out there for many years. But Oldcrafty, it may just be because our winters are so mild. Can anyone else on this forum answer this for really cold winter areas?

Welcome Viodom! I hope you enjoy the Rose Forum and its members as much as I have through the years. I've learned so much from them. Congratulations on your new home -and you have a great climate for roses and gardening. I can give lots of suggestions for wonderful roses, but my zone 5 is quite different from your zone. For example, I can't grow tea roses here. I have New Dawn which I do love, but I have climbers that I like even more. I'm sure the Carolina posters out there will give you some excellent suggestions. @ Meredith- thanks for the input and pics! Being in NC that helps- also i noticed some spots on my poted roses too which i treated organically but did pretty well during the summer-being so hot here- I just noticed fast fading on the blooms. still I am wanting a show all through summer so the new dawn was tempting ;)
@ Karen- thanks for the congrats! a new home with new room and ideas! the pics are lovely-the pic of your fence is what I am going for... you mentioned you like certain climbers - may I ask which ones you like best? even in dif zones I am curious :)

Karen, so gorgeous! Who could you dare like better? Teasing :D I just so often come back to New Dawn :)

vlodom, the summers can be so hot the blooms aren't the best of the year. Still, it's amazing how beutiful they can be. I have ND in a fair amount of shade, and she is fabulous in the summer. And the very Southern roses look great in the heat (look for the Earthkind list; good list there).

Royal Sunset blows more quickly and the blooms are a bit smaller. But it's darned hot, ya know ;) ? I get irked that the deep purples aren't the right color in the heat, but I have a few I really grow for the autumn scene (Night Owl, Othello, etc).

If you want bright for a climber, I love High Society. She's a lovely bright mulberry-red color in the heat (and takes heat great) and in the cool she's one of those gorgeous deep purple-reds. Fragrant, too! And no BS.

(If nobody carries her later (she's a J&P rose), y'all feel free to email me, anyone. I'd hate to see that one lost from gardens.)

Hi vlodom,

I was just going through some similar decisions recently and rhonda in upstate SC convinced me to go with Crepuscle. She posted a picture of it growing at one year old that is incredibly enticing. Plus, it will do that well in less than ideal sunlight. And it has few thorns. Just a really nice rose, I think.

I've been interested in New Dawn too. Someone has been working on me towards one of New Dawn's seedlings: Penny Lane. That one has really good shade tolerance, she said, and she loved its fragrance. I assume it will grow as well in the Piedmont as New Dawn will, though she was writing from Kansas.

Some other rambling or climbing roses you might take an interest in: Madame Alfred Carriere, Dublin Bay, Red Fountain, Quadra, Laguna, Reve d'Or, Jaune Desprez, William Allen Richardson, Sympathie, Goldfinch, Creme de la Creme, Climbing Pinkie (especially the cultivar at the Antique Rose Emporium). If you'd really like a lot of bushiness as well as the ability to put out some long canes, then take a look at Ghislaine de Feligonde. It ought to mix well with Crepuscle too. Avoid Iceberg, including climbing Iceberg, if you want to try to avoid having to spray for blackspot on the east coast. I wanted Iceberg so much that I decided to give it a try anyway... but sure enough, all I'd read about it being more of a problem on this side of the country turned out to be correct.

Welcome!! Congratulations on the new yard....and the house ;o)

I grow lots of roses here and they have to be tough. I don't pamper them. This means no spraying and no watering unless we are in real drought conditions.

I prune and fertilize in spring and then....live and let live.

I started growing roses on a rock cliff (my backyard) that they piled clay onto and then planted junipers. It was lovely (not). In this picture you can see where I tried a Knockout, just to see if it could grow in such poor conditions.

Blush Noisette (top of the waterfall)
Country Dancer (middle of hill--deep pink)

Mrs. Dudley Cross (gorgeous blooms that change color!)
Julia Child (One of the few yellows I can grow without spraying)

You will notice I am growing some old garden roses. We have some good luck with these when compared to a lot of the modern roses. It's definitely a class of roses worth looking into as you plan your garden.

Hello and welcome!
In terms of what to put on a fence or wall, have you considered Zephirine Drouhin? She's not peachy in the slightest, but she is bloomiferous and fairly trouble free. She is also happy in less than full sun (if you are serious about only 4 hours rather than 6, that would make many if not most roses less than happy.)
Did I mention her fragrance?
And that she's thornless?
Know that she can be a slow starter -- slow as in no blooms the first year, and perhaps even precious few the second. After that, stand back!

PS: She's also pretty easy to find, both online from mail order sources and in better nurseries when it bare root planting time comes in your area. (I always prefer buying what I can actually see is a healthy specimen!)

Viodom, I love tall Austin roses that I train as climbers - St. Swiftun, Golden Celebration, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Abraham Darby. I also love the Kortes climbers Rosarium Euterson and Rosanna. Here's a few:

whatever you plant, dig the hole twice as big as you think you should and fix the soil up the best that you can afford to. Start a compost pile and mulch the plants well. Then you have the best chances of success.

Most if not all David Austin roses will need spraying with fungicide in NC.

New Dawn and Crepuscule are very good choices. Other climbers with some blackspot resistance: Quadra, Laguna, Aloha Hawaii, Papi Delbard.

Modern bush roses with some blackspot resistance: Irish Hope, Mother of Pearl, Earth Song, Country Dancer, Prairie Sunrise, Winter Sunset, The McCartney Rose, Carefree Sunshine, Elina.
