Mostly healthy, can be grown no spray climbers here are:
Quadra - red, good repeat
Illusion - red (more leaf loss to BS then Quadra, but still reasonable), good repeat
New Dawn or Awakening - pink, will loose 30-50% leaves, but good repeat and good vigor, fragrance depends on your nose (very fragrant for me)
White Cap - white, good health (less then 30% leaf loss), excellent repeat, fragrant
Carefree Sunsite, light yellow, smaller then others, can be grown as a bush too, good repeat and fragrance

mbkrucow1968, how large do you want the climber to be? Besides BS resistance, what else do you want from it?

Darlow's Enigma is a shrub. It just doesn't grow like a climber.

Yes, my DE grows like a big very nicely shaped bush, no desire to climb. However I saw Lori's DE trained as a climber. So I know it is possible, but probably requires some skills.

I've had good luck with...

Westerland(Orange fades to pink). Gets a good spring flush followed by sporadic blooming until winter. Gets some BS, but it doesn't seem to hurt it much. Sprawling growth.

Dublin Bay(Red). Good repeat bloomer. More upright growth habit. Gets some BS but blooms well regardless.

These are good climbers I used to have...
New dawn that got RRD. It grew very well and had two good flushes in the spring and fall. I wasn't crazy about the blooms. They were very light pink. I like darker colored blooms.

Antike 89. Extremely healthy and vigorous. Too much so. it would produce about 20, 8' long canes every year. It only bloomed in the spring and produced hundreds of blooms. I had to cut it back after blooming or else it would take over.

I've had others, but that's all I can think of right now. I stopped spraying a few years ago. I have 3 young kids and don't have time to do it. I guess my roses suffer because of this, but I don't notice. I don't miss spraying.

Darlow's Enigma is quite thorny with thick canes and doesn't train very easily as a climber. Mine sort of leans and grows up on a trellis rather than being trained like most of my usual climbers.

For repeat-blooming climbers I would recommend Aloha or Rhonda for short, mannerly climbers. Awakening or New Dawn for large, massive climbers. Cornelia is a very pliable and easy to train short climber but it defoliates quite a lot from BS.

York_Rose, to answer your question, I would like the climber to cover the trellis and rebloom often, fragrance isn't as important as appearance to me as the arbor is in the middle in the garden. It is 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide and about 4 feet deep. The hub and son went a little overboard!!

In that case you probably want something a little less vigorous than New Dawn, Awakening, or Dr. van Fleet (all are nearly the same plant). That's a rose probably more vigorous than your trellis is designed for.

What color would you like the flowers to have?

The arbor is very sturdy and and staked with rebar about two feet down so it isn't going anywhere. Vigorous is good in my opinion!! My favorite is apricot or orange, but I really didn't have any one color in mind. Just want something to do the arbor justice!

Westerland? Royal Sunset? I am not familiar with them in your area but they'd be perfect if they're happy there. Westerland is orange to pink; Royal Sunset is a yellow/apricot blend with wonderful fragrance.

Westerland and Royal Sunset are not really that resistant here. Westerland will loose more then 50% -70% leaves, RS will be naked.

Westerland does great here. I do spray it about every 3 weeks with Bayer fungicide and it stays clean. It grows vigorously and produces blooms June through early October. It completely covered my 7' arbor in just 3 years, so this year I cut it back to 5' to get more blooms lower on the arbor. I added Betty Corning clematis to provide constant bloom throughout summer.

Thanks, Olga. We did have moderate BS in my California zone (lots of summer fog), and with no spray, I saw just a little occasional spotting on my gorgeous Royal Sunset. No defoliation. It's amazing how that can change in another zone. I thought it was a great rose but I think I will stop piping up about it in threads about locations far removed from where I know it works well!

The summers of the Mid-Atlantic region provide pretty much exactly the conditions in which black spot thrives best, with lots of humidity (even during droughts) and daily highs in the 80's or 90's.

Westerland and its sport, Autumn Sunset, both do wonderfully for me in Virginia. They get black spot but don't seem to mind.

I loved Rosarium Ueterson at my former home. Was blackspot resistant like some of the other Kordes roses that I had. I'm trying to find a special place at my new house. It is a gorgeous and unusual rose.

I would recommend Roberta Bondar, a yellow climber from Palatine Roses in Canada.
It is a Kordes rose and like most of the Kordes Roses are quite winter hardy. This one is special for me and I love it.

New Dawn is pretty foolproof - even I can do it! Seriously, they're my first "real" (ie not Knockout) roses, and they did GREAT in their first year last year. I planted them the previous autumn. I'm really excited to see how they'll do this year now they're well-established (and just hoping the supercold winter we had hasn't affected them!). They get some blackspot, but seem to laugh it off and keep right on growing and blooming....

I have five Madame Alfred le Carriere roses to climb up and cover a deer fence we had to put up. They bloom all season and will tolerate a little shade.

I second the suggestions for New Dawn; I have one that is failsafe and gorgeous.

Graham Thomas is a lovely yellow climber; mine last year had so many blooms on it a couple of the canes broke off from the weight! It grew to 12' last summer.

Madame Alfred le Carriere will require spraying here. I used to grow this one and really loved it. I lost it to RRD three years ago, still feel sorry. But it is goinig to be naked soon after spring fliush if grown no spray.
