Hybrid Perpetual for 5b

Like many, I'm eyeing all the gorgeous Loubert roses available as pre-orders from Vintage Gardens.

However, I know that as a rule, HPs don't necessarily do well in my climate.

Can anyone tell me if Silver Queen really *does* survive down to 4b (as stated on Help Me Find) and whether Camille Bernardin might make it in my garden?

And if you don't know about these specific roses, can you name any other light pink or crimson HPs that might work for me?

I've stayed away from this class in the past but must admit that my Alba and Moss-heavy planting scheme (assuming everything made it through the terrible ice storm we had this winter) could use something that blooms later in the season too.

I just ordered Silver Queen, took a chance, so about 2014, or so, I can be in a position to comment.

I note that Dr. Masaryk is grown in Lower Saxony and in Lithuania.

I am also researching like mad, in my entire rose library, inheirited from my father, also an OGR addict, and added to by me, to develope a protocol for black spot. I do love rugosas, but I simply am not willing to do without albas and Portlands, not to mention New Dawn and her descendents.

Keep in mind that global warming is for reals, weather we like it or not, so zones will continue to get warmer. This winter had one night of -20 temp. and that night all my yard slumbered under 18" of snow cover. Mind, I am not cangratulating myself yet, but we shall see what is left come spring. Right now I am thinking that the squirrels, skunks and other rose munching critters are more damaging than the cold. Except fpr that one night, the rest of the lows never got below -10F, and rarely below 0F, which puts me, for this season, in the colder part of zone 6.

I also would like to hear from anyone who can comment on the hardiness of the Loubert offerings.

You might like to check out the offerings at High Country Roses. They have a found alba, Jeremiah pink, a climber, Hattie Burton, which looks lovely for our climate, and another climber, Prairie Dawn, from Horvath, which also looks nice.

If you would like to try without a monetary risk at this point, I can send you cuttings of a couple when you get warm enough for that. I have a Rose Edouard and a Buffalo Bill that are both certainly big enough for 'extra' cuttings.

I don't know if y'all need them grafted or not, but it's a thought :)

You are correct, Jenny Duval is not a Hybrid Perpetual. It is one of those roses that experts are still arguing about his past and where to place it. They even think it isn't Jenny Duval but is ( I think) President de Seze. Baron de Bonstetten was a close personal friend of the French hybridizer. He grows tall and upright in my garden. He is a favourite because the flowers are alway neat and shapely. I don't like the bad hair day look. They are also very fragrant and the red is a really deep rich red . IMO he is one of the best deep reds.

Baronne Prevost has been blooming consistently for the past 2? months or so. I find it difficult to get good pictures of her, especially in the bright sun. She’s been blooming mostly in clusters of about 5. They usually open at different times, so I can never bring myself to cut them, until the last buds of the cluster begin opening. By then, the first blooms are finished blooming. Today, I cut a few blooms left from such clusters, and put them in a small vase. I discovered that my phone captures Baronne Prevost’s color much better indoors! There’s non of that harsh neon color, I get in the sunlight. Here’s a few of her blooms from this morning. Although this bloom looks more red here, (it’s not really). I like seeing her stamens. They remind me of some of my beloved Bourbon roses. Lisa

Totoro, we'll bring some of them to the new abbey for sure...others it's not possible. I've got a Miss Atwood that's about 14' high and maybe 16' wide. You'd need an earthmover to get it out, and I don't know if a rose that size would survive a transplant. To be honest, I'm burying my head in the sand about this moving to the new place. It's going to be a bittersweet experience: our current site is woefully inadequate for our needs, but it's been home for 33 years now, and it will be very emotional leaving it.

[chuckle] I love Star Trek so I don't mind being compared to its computer, but it's pretty laughable considering how much of a low tech person I am. I think that's one of the many appeals of gardening, particularly if it's organic gardening (or in my case, lazy gardening). I have only ever logged in to post on two websites ever, this one and the "other" rose website, and it took 4 years of lurking here for me to even manage that much! Glad the final paragraph was useful, Vap! Not everyone wants to read the full encyclopedic spew of information that resulted from scanning and musing on my rose lists, so the summary is a good idea. With your comment I looked back and realized I'd shamefully forgotten to include Marcesa Boccella among the cold zone favorites. I listed her in an edit right next to Grandmother's Hat. Being a low tech person of course, I'd already finished this message and went back to edit, and didn't realize that I'd lose all this typing in the process. Hope it doesn't post twice. Katyajini, I did grow Deuil de Dr. Raynaud for several years in a part shade situation and it survived and came back for me, though without any surviving cane. He had nice dark color and deserves a positive mark for hardiness too, but I killed him when I needed to move him for some reason. Thanks for reminding me that I need to replace him this year. I've grown the hybrid perpetual Henry Nevard for about 5 years here in my zone 5 garden, with good hardiness and disease resistance. A very pretty rose.
