I currently grow Zenaitta and Cassie, both polyanthas of great vigor and bloomiferousness; however, I cannot give any information as to cold hardiness, since I live in Southern California. I have also grown Wee Butterflies, which is an interesting plant, but it never exhibited much vigor for me. I need to replace it as some point, but have not yet got around to it. JimD

About ten years ago I purchased a book called Peter
Schneider on Roses, which contained a photograph of one of
Mr. Jerabek's roses called, Alice Pat, that he named after
his wife. I was very impressed with the photograph and
started to correspond with Mr. Jerabek (since he didn't
have a computer). Mr Jerabek kindly sent me cuttings of
Alice Pat, which I still have today. This is one of the
very few examples of the rose being as good as, if not
better, than the photograph. I have thoroughly enjoyed
this rose and can understand why he named it after his
wife, who I'm sure is as beautiful as the rose that was
named for her. This is a bullet proof gorgeous rose that
I'm ashamed to say has gotten almost no care from me, since I've had it. I just bought a new house and am preparing
several large rose beds. Alice Pat will be at my front
door. I know Mr. Jerabek will not see this, but I want to thank him for hybridizing such a great rose.

I have 3 of his roses.... MELVIN, PAW MAW and BROWN STUDY.

I absolutely love MELVIN! He's a gorgeous rose. I almost lost him before the septic dig up two yrs ago. The coloring is just so unusual. He's in a pot til I figure where he's going.

PAW MAW is pretty cool too. It grows huge! My plant is in a semi-shady spot and it grows 6ftx3-4ft. Blooms pretty well even in the part shade...

BROWN STUDY hasn't done as well as the other two, but I still like it. It stays under 3ft so far. Doesn't bloom as much as I'd like, but when it does it's pretty cool! (I probably just need to feed it more..)

Beautiful photos, Beth. Jerabek is one of my favorites and I've been collecting his roses for years. I now have 11 of them, mostly from Roses Unlimited.

Alice Pat is a pretty floribunda. It's a fairly good grower, about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide.

Aunt Ruth is a climber. It's the only grafted Jerabek rose I own. It came from K&M and is grafted onto fortuniana. I'm not a lover of own-root roses in general, so I'm pleased with the way most of the Jerabek roses grow very well on their own roots.

Brown Study came from Vintage Gardens and is not a really good grower. It has stayed fairly short for more than 10 years and has only three canes. It is a fabulous looking russet rose, though.

Sometimes it's a brighter orange.

Melvin is a star! Imagine an own-root floribunda that's 12 or 14 feet tall and about 10 feet wide.

Milan is similar to Melvin in coloring, but it's a much smaller rose bush.

Ohio Belle is another climber.

Our Pearl is one of my favorites. It's also a climber.

It produces big bouquets at the tips of its canes.

Paul's Pride is another climber.

Paw Maw, a grandiflora, is almost as tall as Melvin.

Peggy M is the very best Jerabek I own. It blooms in clusters of several colors.

Some of the blooms open up into a quartered shape and look positively delicious, like summer wedding desserts.

Photogenic is another huge rose bush.

It also produces nice clusters.

He was the one that started me hybridizing. He would answer my questions promptly on postcards. He was always ready to send pollen, seeds, and or cuttings. I got the impression that many of his roses had (at that time) "The Fairy" in their heritage. At one point he had a lot of crown gall that almost discouraged him to the point of giving up roses.

Yes, I remember mourning his death and wishing he had been able to produce even more roses. Too bad the ones he did produce aren't more widely available.

Any suggestions on where to purchase any of Mr. Jerabek's roses? I have a new house and would love to add them to the garden in his honor.

Roses Unlimited may still carry a few, but they used to be listed separately as the Jerabek Collection. The new RU website doesn't include that collection, so it might be best to call and ask. K&M Roses still carries Aunt Ruth.

O they are beautiful! I never heard of any of them, or of Mr. Jerabek! It is SUCH a shame that Knockouts and DA's flood the market, whilst so many roses, far more interesting and worthy,are ignored and all but unavailable. So frustrating!!!

Henry-k not to jump off topic but I have a hybridizer friend who has recently had trouble with many of his 2-3 year old seedlings infected with crown gall. I've read gallex was the only avalible treatment for nursery plants. Did Paul Jerabek ever find a soulution?

I grow Snowbelt, aka Cassie, which blooms here almost year round with zero disease. Saw it at Eurodesert when Eurodesert was closing. Snowbelt had a sprinkling of small white flowers and was clothed almost to the ground with very dense foliage which is its habit. It was just coming into bloom at Eurodesert so the image was of a round totally green mound just starting to be dotted with white flowers. Seen from a distance, the foliage habit doesn't at first give the impression it is a rosebush at all but some other landscaping plant. So if you like a different look in your garden this rose might be a good choice. Since I live in the inland Southern California heat, I don't know about its cold hardiness.

Seeingreen, sorry, as I mentioned, I kept all of the postcards that Paul had sent me, but I cannot find them now. Also, my 80 year old brain does not recall how he handled the problem. Perhaps Peter Schneider can help you.

That is my Uncle Paul is my Great Uncle His son Peter Jerabek lives in Northfield Center and is in the book.

Because of this thread, I bought a "Paul's Pride" climbing rose from RU this past spring. What beautiful healthy foliage! It grew to 6 feet this year, own root. I didn't let it flower, and I mounded up some cane protection a few weeks ago. I will post again about this rose next spring/summer.
