Anyone else gardening in middle TN? Tips & Favorite OGR's?

Hello everyone,

It's been a long while since I had time to invest into gardening and browsing this forum again, and I was just seeing if there are any other posters from the middle TN area. Would love to hear any tips or great OGR's that you've grown for our area, and if you'd encountered any issues that may help me dive back into this lovely hobby.

Right now I have a very small collection of Kronprincessin Viktoria, Souv. de la Malmaison, Rouge Royal, Eden, and Nur Mahal. I was thinking of adding Mrs. BR Cant and Lady Hillington, Duchess de Brabant and possible Lyda Rose this year. I was really looking for a vigorous rose, that gets fairly large (not always BR Can't large but 5x5' or larger) and is a shrub/bushy type in growth. I see belinda's dream too but the only ones I've seen looked to have RRV.

I tore up 6 rose bushes last year because of RRV and am very wary of putting too many roses in the yard this year for fear it will appear again. I guess I will just have to diligently spray to hope the mites that carry it won't end up on my roses. It seems to be everywhere when you know what you're looking for (outdoor shopping mall landscape roses & in neighborhood common areas on knock-outs in my neck of the woods)

Anywho, it would be nice to know of some local rose enthusiasts and hear from you all on what grows well around here. Nice to be back!

I live south of nashville in spring hill. I had a great collection of roses in pa , but am renting now so I just have pots. So I'm afraid I'm not much help , but wanted to say hi to a neighbor !
I found darlows enigma to be incredibly vigorous and smelled wonderful and disease resistant. I plan on putting one in a whiskey barrel . Not sure if it's old but buff beauty is another one I really love , not quite as vigorous but still grew like a weed!
If you have any favorite nashville nurseries id sure love to hear of them. I've been to bates and s&w nursery ... But down this far there isn't much.
I ordered eden from brushwood for this spring , so if you care to share how yours is I'd love to hear! Hope someone else posts and is more helpful to you !!

Natalie and Lilyfinch, Hi. I garden near Vanderbilt. So glad to have other locals on the forum. Are you all familiar with HMF? If so, check out Jean Harrison's garden. She had lots of healthy no spray roses in our area. Natalie, I have an "extra" Lyda rose I purchased and do not have room for...we all need to compare notes. When I was very little, my mother was struggling with keeping two climbing Peace roses in good health in the desert of west Texas, in Odessa. They grew on a trellis surrounding the window of my older brother's bedroom. I used to climb up the iron trellis and sit on the shelf under the window to read comic books and swat at the bumble bees that would amble past. Those roses were the size of the dinner plates Mother served us with! Later we moved back to east Texas, near my grandparents home, and I saw other types of roses. My grandmother always had a couple of old "Sweetheart Roses" (Cecile Brunner), and she would point out other old roses, and other heritage plants as well when I or a cousin would show an interest. She was NOT an avid hobby gardener- she had 13 children, (my mother was her middle 7th child), and needless to say, her hands were very full with children, grandchildren, my grandfather, being active in her church, and the Eastern Stars, among other things. She always had a neat, tidy yard, and they grew an enormous vegetable garden to feed the family, kept chickens for eggs and meat, had a couple of cows for milk and butter, etc. Their life style was one of a simpler day, and with very little "cash money", she wasn't about to spend it on flowers for her yard! When she was an old lady, she would smile at the efforts people would go to in order to maintain a St. Augustine lawn, and a bunch of landscaper designed plantings. In her day, passalong plants were about all she and her cronies had, and she loved all of them for the ease of care: plant, water during droughts, and let them fend for themselves! Anyone who lives in the south can recognize what I call the "Granny Yard": a couple of OGRs, some honeysuckle that has to be beaten back every few years to keep it from taking over the world, a wisteria of the same ambitious nature, a magnolia, a pecan, a couple of oaks or ashes, a warty looking "toothache tree", maybe a willow if there is a pond nearby, a bunch of volunteer onions and garlics here and there, oh, and of course the easter lilies of yesteryear in a bed at the back corner of the house... 'Fess up. You have all visited this house! I know you have! In my twenties as a young mother I played at gardening, and suffered disappointment after disappointment when my hybrid teas and grandifloras would croak for lack of high culture. I just could not make myself get too excited about anything that was that high maintenance. One year my mother in law mentioned that one of my sister's in law wanted a "start" of her old "Sweetheart Rose", and asked if I would like one too. That sparked the memory, and soon I had my own little Cecile growing in my yard. I have moved away, and didn't know about cuttings back then, so I didn't preserve that plant through the years. But luckily it is one that is widely available. I filed away for future reference the note that those old garden roses really are tough as an old boot. We bought this home in 1999, and when I was ready to finally start a real garden, I was introduced to the Antique Rose Emporium here in Texas. From there I learned about rose rustling, about all the classes of old roses and the modern shrubs that seem superior to hybrid teas. That was at least 300 roses ago. And counting. ~Allison

(9b v. 10a, Sunset Zones probably between 18 and 19 for you, 20 to 21 for me) It seems your soil is quite a bit different in origin from what I've seen on line, being more of a deeper alluvium. Mine is the white shale layer of the Santa Monica Mountain formations. I water enough to keep plants alive, but not "thriving", particularly during the worst of the heat. I don't fertilize with anything other than prunings I shred and throw back on the soil surface as "mulch". I don't amend using anything, period. I avoid "organic" fertilizers due to the legions of moles, gophers, skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, rabbits, rats, etc., all of which are either attracted by the organics themselves or to those which they attract. I don't need, nor wish to encounter any more "wildlife" that close to the house. Sometimes, it's a "witch" living this close to the "urban wilderness". I don't fertilize those in the ground with inorganic fertilizers, either. The soil is quite 'salty', as is the irrigation water. There has been no rain to flush the accumulated salts from the soil. Adding inorganics would only serve to intensify the "salts". I do use light, infrequent applications of inorganic fertilizer (always water soluble) to newly propagated, potted plants to replace the nitrogen they lose to watering. Being in an "extreme heat, extreme fire danger" area, I am allotted a relatively high level of "Tier 1" water use. I use, and have been using a quarter of that allotment, both to conserve the resource itself as well as to conserve the ever increasing cost of it. The areas I would normally irrigate show the reduced water consumption. I recently removed sixty feet of forty-plus year old escalonia hedge which had begun dying at one end and continued crisping and browning by the foot from the southern toward the northern end. Increasing the water to it had little positive effect, so eliminating the need, as I have done with all other plantings proving themselves "too needy", helps reduce the danger of combustion as well as need to increase the water bill. I’ve only just discovered this board but what a great thread! Building on Raye Smith’s suggestion, go round your house with your smartphone or camera. Take an overall picture of each room in each direction, then close ups of any smaller stuff, closet and drawer contents, identifying marks/serial/models numbers on appliances/TVs/other electronics, etc, etc. You can do this over several days if necessary. When you are done, add labels to each photo indicating what it’s of (Tommy’s room, master closet, jewellery box, etc) and upload the pictures to the cloud or copy to a flash drive and store in your safe/safe deposit box. Hopefully, you will never need it but in case you ever need to make an insurance claim, you won’t have to rely on memory. If you can manage it, update the pictures annually.

Lilyfinch & Susan, Great to "meet" you both :)

I am a member on HMF- and I ran across Jean Harrison's list of disease resistant roses the other day and put it in my "clippings". I think I may have drooled on my keyboard after reading that list of what she grows, If I can develop 1/10th of her gardening skills I will be thrilled :)

Lillyfinch- I have had my eden for 3 years now, and it has outgrown the largest trellis I could find. I need to get an obelisk to weave it through, it is a stunner come May, even just at 2 years old and 4' tall. Not a great cut rose but there is such a sweet quality about it's blooms and it is great for the back of the flower bed up against the house. I will take photos sometime this spring for you.

I *had* some really great climbers but had to rip them up because of RRV- I'm just glad that Eden survived the shovel pruning I had to do. Every rose in the backyard had to go, but a few in the front were sheltered from the outbreak. Photo attached of what used to be my back fence. Hoping to get back into rose gardening without going through that experience again anytime soon-

It is still a couple of hours away, but Petals from the Past is in Alabama and they have OGR's, I've wanted to make a trip down there but just haven't found the time as of yet to make the trip, link included below for their website. I'm a facebook fan and they also do fun seminars that I'd like to attend around the blueberry and blackberry season. I can't wait for Spring!

lilyfinch- I found this photo of some of some flowers from the garden and it has eden's blossoms right in the front- the only reason why the blooms aren't the greatest cut rose is they fall apart a bit sooner than I'd like, but they actually are quite nice in a vase :)

I'm also in Middle Tn, south of Nashville in Williamson Co!

I've got all three that you listed, Mrs. BR Cant and Lady Hillington and Duchess de Brabant. I bought them as bands last spring and they did great in pots building size all summer. I may have gotten them in the ground too late to really get established before our unusually cold November and right now none of my new tea roses look very happy. I'll just have to wait and see what ends up surviving.

I also picked up a Belinda's Dream from Petals from the Past on a quick detour home from Auburn last summer. It seems very hardy and happy. I'm hoping to stop by on another drive by in a month or two when I know what I've lost from the cold and do a little replacement shopping.

I've only been doing this a couple years and I would say my biggest surprise is that the toughest thing I have to deal with isn't blackspot but rose slugs/sawfly larva.

subk3- Nice to meet you! I'm also in Williamson county south of Nashville. I'm a bit jealous that you have been to petals from the past, I've been itching to make a trip, but my hubby and I have very busy and fast paced careers, so I haven't been able to make it a priority yet. I think I will place a big order from them this year- I have my eye on a fig tree and some herbs as well from the PFTP website :)

It's so cold today, I hope your plants surprise you and do well come spring!

Black spot hasn't been a huge problem for me either, at least not on any ogr's- the only big issue I've ever had was RRV, even though there have been quite a few *huge* green caterpillars that I've discovered eating the largest unopened buds on my roses and had to have the husband come and take care of. For some reason, really quishy large caterpillars really gross me out and I don't like to be the one to dispose of them, they were quarter size around and about 3-4'' long, yuck!

I've totally just icked myself out ha, well, Spring still can't come soon enough in my book :)

I saw there is a Nashville gardening event in April (Mid Tn Plant Sale) you all let me know if you plan on going or if you go to any events gardening related in the future and we might cross paths and be able to say hello!

Hello! I too am in Nashville. I have a fairly young garden at my current home but it includes Duchesse de Brabant, Lady Hillingdon, Gruss an Aachen, Belinda's Dream and Clotilde Soupert. I am officially done with winter and ready to see my crocuses quietly poking their shoots above the cold earth. Hope we can cross paths one of these days!
