New to orchids and I got a problem already

I picked up an orchid last week that was discounted because it had no blooms. I thought it would be nice to see if I could get it to bloom. I got it home and I have not had a chance to transplant it to a bark mix that would be better drainage. This morning I was checking it out and noticed that over the last few days it has a really sick looking leaf. I wanted to know if there is something wrong I'm doing like to much direct sun or watering it wrong.

Any help would be great as I would like to see if I can get it to grow flowers.

If it is infront of the sun, i would shield it a little.

Juli it sounds to me that it got really dried out way too much. There are several things that have to happen and several things that might happen. First Vanda's are heavy feeders. They like to be misted like they are in a rain forest for 5-15 minutes. The good roots that are Grey will turn green and as the plant gets healthier you will see the end of the root looking very healthy. The entire plant needs a good soaking always in the morning or day so that it can dry out at night. Water in the crown will rot it out over night. Sometimes I water mine by misting several times a day. Just give em a good soaking. Next they need high light. Since yours is stressed put it somewhere where you can keep a close eye on it and baby it along for now. You can mix up some fertilizer like a 20-20-20 week weekly meaning a week solution 1x per week. They are heavy feeders. Mix 1 tsp per gal. for weekly fertilizing. Now for the what might happen. The plant may be so stressed that it might throw off a kiki = a baby plant at the bottom cause it wants to survive and the top plant is dying. There are other tricks you can do to try and promote more roots from the stalk but it sounds like you have some good ones still and thats good. Vanda's are fairly easy when they have enough water, wind and light. If you do the fertilizing you could be rewarded with many flowers a few times a year depending on the variety you have. Good luck!

Do you *honestly* believe he's not even flirting online anymore? And are you completely comfortable that he'll be faithful to you while he's deployed and his buddies all go off tail-hunting? Because if you don't seriously believe that, and if you don't trust him 100% to be faithful, then what you have isn't really a good marriage. You can admit it now, get a quickie divorce, and try again in a little while as a woman who's older and wiser. Or you can string this thing out until you catch him again and he admits it but promises never to do it again, or 'sorta' catch him but don't have 100% proof and he denies it, or maybe just 'smell a rat' but can't prove it beyond a doubt. This gut simply doesn't sound 'beyond a doubt' trustworthy. Honestly, I'm NOT one to give up on a marriage easily, and ended up staying in a bad marriage for a long, long time. But now that I'm older and wiser, I'd say take a good hard look at what you've got, and without cleaning it up and 'fixing' him (he won't change) -- decide if that's the marriage you want. Then decide. If it's not the marriage you want, End It! You've got no kids. You don't *have* to try to work it out. Unless you see concrete proof that he's really, really changed, I honestly wouldn't believe it. And new passwords is certainly NOT proof that he's changed. If anything, it's proof that he hasn't.

Thanks chris45ny~ That's what I was thinking too, however they sent out someone I have never even seen or spoken to before to look at the counters and she was poo pooing the whole thing and saying "Well this is a natural product it is in the nature of the stone to have these variances..." I said , "Well Absolute black is pretty uniform in every piece I have seen and I don't think the person laying out the template did it correctly, they should have avoided the gray area and not placed it front and center of my sink." She was trying to see "What I wanted to get." I said "I want it to look right, period." She was then going to go back and talk to the boss and let me know what would happen... Meanwhile they wanted me to sign a paper that said everything had been delivered and was in fine condition which I said I would not sign. I am sitting now with a sink that is not hooked up, a dishwasher that is not hooked up all because I am waiting for them to decide what they are going to do! Since last Friday... Any more advice??? I feel your pain. My gout flares up in my knees and ankle and I suffer a lot with it despite taking meds. I get a flare up more than once a month and the pain is awful. Mine tends to flare up more when I am dehydrated or eat something with high purines which I do try to avoid. With your compromised kidneys and dialysis you most likely have restrictions on how much you can drink. I keep a crutch under my bed to use when my ankle flares up because there is no way I can put any weight on my foot because of the intense pain. There is a drug your Dr can prescribe for you when you do have a flare up. My sister takes it the first sign of gout pain and swears it works. I hope your flare up doesn't last too long. Anne

sunburn. The plant looks healthy. Reduce the the amount of direct light. The leaf will not repair itself. But it can still grow and flower.

Mine get early AM sun only and high indirect light for the rest of the day. I keep them out of afternoon sun.
A little chill in the air (lows at night in the mid 50's) and shorter days will induce flowering. Reduce watering a little when you chill them. Avoid artificial light if possible. They should respond in about 10 days to two weeks by spiking.

Sunburn was what I was thinking because I have it placed in the front of all my plant in a south facing window.

Should I remove the leaf from the plant now?

Leave the leaf alone. It still benefits the plant. Move the plant to reduce the light...

I wanted to know if I should repot the plant since this is the pot I got it in from the garden center. Also, the moss it is planted in seems to hold water long. How often do I need to water the plant as well as how often do I use fertilizer?

Thanks for the help. I would like to see if I can grow these as I hear they are not easy to grow. I think my wife will love the flowers. If I can get them to grow.

I would leave it in the moss until it needs to be repotted. Moss is not a bad potting medium if you do some things correctly. Water when the top of the moss seems to be just slightly moist. Use bottled or distilled water and very little fertilizer. The moss becomes a sponge to fertilizer minerals and will eventually burn everything. Phalaenopsis will bloom when night temps drop by 15-20 degrees. I would keep it as warm as possible through winter and in spring let it get cool and flower for you. It needs that drop in temperature for at least two weeks.

Or sit it by an open window in the evenings now (for the 15-20 degree temp drop from day/night) for 2-4 weeks and you may get flowers this late winter or early next spring. About 1/2 of my hybrid phals have started spikes, the rest should start spiking in the next month or so.

I'm new to orchids too but some people do cut off parts of leaves I've seen that. I think you might need to clean the thing with alcohol or something afterward as it could cause rot or disease or bugs. I know some experts do cut them if there's a problem.

I'm with Matt on this one. A plant that is stressed shouldn't be repotted. Your plant doesn't look too stressed (new leaf is a good sign), but I would still wait until Spring to repot.
