My friends man friend had a spell with that a few months ago! He was beside himself with the pain. Strange as it sounds, he took Apple Cider Vinegar (the good stuff...with the mother in it) and it helped! He now takes it daily...to prevent it from happening again..and so far, it's worked!

The apple cider vinegar works

My husband had gout and the doctor read off a list of foods not to eat and it was everything he loved. He stopped eating it and the problem went away.

Tell your friends man if he starts to retain fluids to stop the vinegar. If he takes meds for fluid retention tell him to stop.

I feel your pain. My gout flares up in my knees and ankle and I suffer a lot with it despite taking meds. I get a flare up more than once a month and the pain is awful. Mine tends to flare up more when I am dehydrated or eat something with high purines which I do try to avoid. With your compromised kidneys and dialysis you most likely have restrictions on how much you can drink.

I keep a crutch under my bed to use when my ankle flares up because there is no way I can put any weight on my foot because of the intense pain.

There is a drug your Dr can prescribe for you when you do have a flare up. My sister takes it the first sign of gout pain and swears it works.

I hope your flare up doesn't last too long.

I had gout in my feet a few years ago, from eating hotdogs and bologne for a solid week - there is no pain like the pain from gout!

I drank lots and lots of cranberry juice + water and it went away, but, OMG - I could barely walk because the pain was so severe - since then, I steer clear of nitrates!

The last time I had a flare a friend told me she was advised by her doctor to avoid asparagus. I had been eating a lot of it, so I (reluctantly) stopped. Haven't had a flare since (knock wood).

Oh you poor sweetheart! My hubby is on a maintenance drug because his is severe. Avoid peanuts, organ meats, shrimp and anything high-fat. One food that seems to help are black cherries.

Oh, Dink, I'm so sorry. I started on dialysis about the same time you did (2007). I've had both gout and heel spur pains since. I bought some Dr. Scholls foot/shoe pads and they help some. Make sure you tell your kidney doctor. You can control somewhat by cutting down on salt, potassium and phosphorous in your diet. A good dietician can give you more info. I take a phosphorous "binder" prescribed by my doctor, it's called Renagel and I take 2 a day. Good luck, sister, I feel your pain.

DH has gout on ocassion and is in terrible pain for days. Doctor prescribed Indomethacin. Gave him the relief he needed. He has to avoid foods high in purine and even that doesn't all ways work. When he has an attack I put him on a diet of egg salad and beet soup, for some reason that helps him.
