Who is going to a Harry Potter party?

So many to choose from! We think we settled on the Borders bookstore at the Grove in Los Angeles. They are expecting over 4 thousand fans...woo hoo! Wish we could get to London or New York ....I think we will have a great time. We have one Slytherin, two Hufflepuff, a Dementor and a Gryffindor.

Let me know if you are planning some fun as well or are lucky enough to be in New York for one of the big parties.

Also, how many out there are planning to read Deathly Hallows all weekend?

Hey, I went to the party at the Grove Borders last year -- It was lots of fun! There were many more grownups than children.

I'm going to the Borders HP party near my home this time and looking forward to it, even though it will be a lot smaller. I noticed the local Ralphs supermarket has cakes and cupcakes with HP decorations, jellied slugs, every flavor jelly beans and DVDs of the films.

Yes, I will get my copy of Deathly Hallows and start reading immediately, but I hope it won't take me all weekend.

There are 2 parties we know of so far. One at a local giant supermarket, they throw a good pre-Harry Potter book party, and seems to attract the younger kid crowd, DH will take my 11 & 9 year old to that one. Just for the cupcakes & candy,

My kids, 15, 14, & 13 year old would like me to take them to the Border's party. It is "cooler" than the supermarket one, geared more for teens and, ahem, moms.

We will be purchasing two Deathly Hallows books since my eldest daughter & I will vie for the book and probably tear it in half trying to see who will get to read it first.

I liked the movie a lot, especially the darker tone as the witches and wizards get older and their lives get more complicated. Ironic that the longest of the novels results in the shortest film--consequently there are parts of the novel that never made it to the screen or are truncated, especially Sirius as the black dog and the incredible difficulty the kids experienced getting into the Ministry of Magic. Those are things I recall with special interest from the novel. But quibbling aside, I found the film well-paced and less reliant on gimmicks--though quidditch brooms and pictures that talk, etc., are certainly still there, they are now just part of the woodwork as the kids move past that stuff. I think Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) is terrific as Dolores Umbridge--that sweetsy exterior over a core of rigid and witless incomprehension of her own evil and literally abusive treatment of children (my daughter found this the most distrubing part of any of the novels/films so far). Luna is a great addition to the series. Like you, Petaloid, I loved her spacy charm (her patronus is a bunny rabbit), but more than that, she grounds Harry in crucial ways. While Ron and Hermione are perplexed at Harry's "seeing" things, she sees them, too, and enables him to stay anchored and focused, less full of the self-doubt that always troubles him. Luna thus embodies, at least to me, one of the novel's central themes--that Harry is never as fully isolated as his position as Voldemort's nemesis threatens to make him. I can understand that sometimes he pushes his friends away because he is so beset with danger from V. Luna brings him back. Someone told me she is an Irish actress who, when she read the novel, decided that only she could play Luna, applied for the part, and there she is. And hasn't Daniel Radcliffe come a long way as an actor. He got very good reviews for his role in Equus, and I think he's good here, too. Not only does he get his first screen kiss--though he's no Johnny Depp, it's slightly sexy--and take on the role of leader, he also understands through these experiences that he cannot go it alone and comes to see himself as part of a larger series of issues. Ron doesn't get much screen time in this one, though his hilarious twin brothers do--I LOVE their antics--and Hermione as problem solver is her usual take-charge self. Little Ginny Weasley is also growing up to be worthy of Harry and she is turning into a powerful witch. The one thing I missed was more screen time for Sirius Black, who is so tormented by his long imprisonment in Azkhaban that he can never really function in the "real" world, whatever that is in the world of Hogwarts. He certainly fares better than the Helena Bonham Carter character, who is completely bonkers and looks like one of the harpies from Dracula. She makes clear what Azkhaban does to its inmates, and even Sirius, while excaptionally concerned with and supportive of Harry, has been knocked a little cockeyed by his imprisonment. Bottom line: good film and I can't wait for the final novel to arrive at my doorstep this week. Will Harry die? I don't think so because it would kill the whole thing and the next two movies would be meaningless. Also, these novels have followed the formula for children's books and in children's books the heroes don't die. Alternatively, IF Harry "dies," his "death" will have an avenue of escape built in and HE'LL BE BACK!!!!!! But then I didn't think Dumbledore would die, either, until I realized that Harry can't reach full maturity until he can stand up as a leader on his own. Well, we'll all know on Friday.

the misguided "my kid is so smart he can read HP when he is 5 so I let him" and "I don't really care what he watches as long as he is out of my hair" attitude Whoa there! Parents who let their kid read books at a high reading level because the child has an accelerated reading ability and parents who plop their kids in front of the TV to keep them out of their hair are in two VERY different categories. Not to say that there aren't parents who do both, but I'd say that those are few and far between. Kids who can read beyond their supposed reading level don't just do that on their own. Love of reading is fostered and encouraged by the parents and the parents have to give the kids access to these books. I'm not saying that no kid can read beyond his level without the help, or that parents who help are guaranteed a child who can read beyond his level. What I'm saying is that it takes a combination of both, and I'd argue that the vast majority of kids (I mean kids who are not otherwise disabled) could read at a much higher level if their parents would do the things which encourage reading. That includes reading to them at a young age and when they are older, having them read to you when they are able; visiting libraries and letting kids pick out books they are interested in; turning off the TV and video games and giving kids an opportunity to entertain themselves; discussing books they've read, and yes, challenging them to read books beyond their level. Kids who have the opportunity to read books beyond their level have a better chance to love reading because they are exposed to new and interesting words and ideas and plots which make them WANT to read more. I agree with lindac who says that it's far more likely that a child who can't read will turn to violence. And I still think most of these kids who can't read have trouble ONLY because their reading skills were not properly fostered by their parents & teachers, not because they lack the natural ability to learn. I have two boys, age 20 & 17, both of whom are avid readers and have been since they learned how to read. So I feel that I have a basis from which to speak regarding kids & reading, oh, yeah, and reading beyond their level, which both of my boys did practically from the beginning. Carla, I can't be certain, but nothing in your posts makes me believe you've read these books Yeah, I'd kinda like to know the answer to that question too. And I'd also like to know what other influences these violent kids you know have in their lives. Interesting discussion although we certainly strayed from the OP's questions. my3sons1, did you go see the movie? What was your decision in the end?

Well, I think they had to leave things out, but they did a much better job putting the more important parts in, unlike the other movies. And there was quite alot, in fact I would think if a person hadn't read the book they would be confused about all the new characters they added so quickly. I was worried about the camping scene, as this to me is a boring part of the book, but in the movie it was done well enough. As far as changes, I noticed a couple right off the bat; but I don't want to post any spoilers.

Hi I'm new to the forum but I've been dying to post what I think is coming to book 7... also forgive me if this has already been mentioned :). 1.) I truely believe Snape is still on the good side for a couple of reasons: a.) I think Snape was in love with Lily. It's kind of hinted in book 5 when Harry was in Snape's memory and Lily came to Snape's rescue. I think the only reason he said that nasty remark to her was because he was embarassed that he just showed HER and the other kids on the lawn his dirty undies and was made a fool by his competion. This is probably why James (had a hunch about Snape's feelings for her) and Siris (100% loyalty to James) hated Snape so much and why Snape hates James/Siris. Also, he probably hates Harry so much (not because his father saved his life and was jerk to him) because Harry is a walking/talking reminder Lily picked JAMES (in every book it remarks how Harry looks exactly like James. So everytime Snape looks at Harry he sees Lily in Harry's eyes and her decsion for a husband in Harry's other physical characteristics). b.) You have to admit, JKR was seriously setting up for everyone to hate Snape. I mean it was TOO built up to make everyone think he's on the dark side. Just seems like her to give us a twist. Plus, in EVERY book so far Snape has been Harry's number one suspect except book 6 when he's hunches are seemed to be confirmed... but are they? c.) It seems to me like DD was begging Snape in book 6 to kill him like he promised (if you remember Hagrid caught them fighting about something Snape didn't want to do). d.) JKR seems to be building Snape up for this great... whatever its called where he can shut out his thoughts and feelings from others... and I bet he can also do that against Vold. Why else is he the PERFECT spy? Its not secret Snape is a very powerful wizard and amazing abilities. e.) Last reason (there might be more but this is all I can think of =P) Snape did two things on the Hogwarts lawn... first he prevented Harry from performing the unforgivable curse. Well, you might say "well duh Snape didn't want to die or be tortured" but that comes to the second thing Snape did on the lawn. He didn't kill Harry. Some think that this might be because Voldamort had other plans for Harry and was ordered to not harm him, but I don't think that was it at all. Vold got what he needed from Harry in the 4th book and he couldn't get what he need in the 5th book (which he also needed Harry for). I honestly think Snape was keeping Harry from harm and keeping him from going to Azkaban. 2.) R.A.B. I have two ideas who this is. The first one is Siris' brother. I think it mentioned that his initials are Relmus A. Black (sorry if I botched his first name... but it starts with a "R" anyways). If you remember from book 5, a heavy lockit was found by Siris and he pitched it in the bag AND Remus was killed by the Dark Lord for wanting to back out... but they never got into the details...

Oops, I meant to say we'll go to the local Barnes & Noble. I mail-ordered one copy of the book which is due to arrive on Saturday and will pick up another at the party so DH and I will each have our own to read. Let's see who finishes first ...

Sorry, my sister said it was a Barnes& Noble at the Grove, not Borders. Hope Harry can survive this last book. I don't think Snape will live however, I think he will sarifice himself. What a great character he is!

Snape is a great character. He's got such a peculiar voice. That actor was also in "Sense & Sensibility which came out some a few years back.

Three of the actors in "The Order of the Phoenix" played together in Sense & Sensibility, I wish I knew their names but Snape and another one of Harry's teachers, the one who teaches Divinations class, & Dolores Umbridge were all actors in S & S.

The Divinations teacher played the main role, Snape played the loyal lover, & Umbridge played a lesser role. Talk about connections!

Just got back from the Potter party. It was fun. There were about 400 people lining up for their books at midnight -- We were number 175.

We got the book and a goodie bag, plus we made a new friend. One girl who won the prize for best costume really seemed to think she was Luna, reciting long passages from the books by heart.

I'll sleep a little now and then start reading -- it will take me at least a day to finish, judging by the size of it.

I went to the Border's party last night as well. The Ann Arbor Art Fair was in full swing right in the middle of everything so there were tons of folks in the store as well as witches of all sizes up and down the streets.

I saw many people & noticed that the scar they paint on the forehead is in a different position that previous years. Now it is off to the right side, & colored light brown, no longer that deep black in the middle of the forehead...interesting, I noticed that Harry's scar in the movie is now more off to the side & lighter in color as well.

I did not get the book last night but will try to hunt it down today w/ the kids. Fun!

Done! It was very good. We ended up going to get it on Saturday morning as the last time we did a midnight release it was crowded and chaotic and not much fun. I was setting up the drip system most of the day Saturday, but I ended up reading all night and finished Sunday afternoon. I wanted to finish by Monday as I didn't want the ending spoiled for me. It's hard to avoid spoilers sometimes - we were waiting for the dvd of the Sopranos but they spoiled the ending the day after it aired.

Bought the book Saturday morning. I'm halfway through. So far so good nobody has spilled the beans I still don't know what happens in the end!

My friend -- and what a friend! -- and her husband already finished reading the book and she brought it to practice today. I didn't even ask her for it! How cool is that! I am a reading junkie.

What fun we had! Thanks everyone for sharing. I just finished the book before my mom who is listening to it on CD- Seems to me the story took off like a bullet train right from the start. I could recognize Tolkien, Dickens, Bronte and C.S. Lewis in her writing. Any other authors seem familliar to any of you?
