Mulching grass = have to dethatch???

Ok, tired of carting off bags of grass and dumping, I've ordered a mulching kit for my John Deere tractor. But talking to a fellow homeowner yesterday, he told me that the "downside" was that I would have to dethatch in the fall.

True?

I know there are some real mulching disciples here. I have a thick, KGB front lawn, underground irrigation, fertilize 2-3 times a season, and generally cut it at about 3.5".

But just tired of driving off in the woods to find someplace to dump the grass.

Also, I ordered the John Deere mulching kit for my tractor which I assume contains blades and a blocking plate. Only $38 shipped. But I now hear about Gator blades, I can get them for about $46. Can they be sufficiently more effective than the JD ones. For the money, I could just re-sell the JD kit and get gators.

TIA
