I think the concrete chemical reaction which produces heat would melt the snow. It would be great if it worked tho, we sure have plenty of snow and its free! Maybe if it wasn't a too detailed form, packed down, and you lined it with plastic? Kathy

I'm in Salt Lake City. My soil is mostly organic matter (tested last March) by design. I posted the details of the seeding in September. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/lawns/msg0900352018060.html?7 The cultivars I chose performed well in the heat of July and August, retaining color and spreading. I watered twice a week at .75inch per watering during the extreme heat (I think we had something like 21 days of 100F or above). I did keep the soil moist in the months immediately after germination (May & June) to nurture the new seedlings, but nothing extreme. I have an easily adjustable automatic Rainbird digital sprinkler controller. I cut way back on watering in September and didn't water at all past Oct. 15. From what I can find on the web about gray snow mold the fungi are always present in lawns, but don't present a problem unless the grass is wet and temperatures stay around 32F or just above - conditions found under dense, slowly melting snow pack, exactly the conditions on my lawn for the last two weeks. I don't think my cultural practices have contributed to the snow mold (other than leaving the grass too long last fall), but it's just been one of those very wet years as I think you know (aren't you up in Davis County?). Now that they've revised the weather forecast to rain for Saturday afternoon, I think I'll wait a few more weeks for the first mowing and hopefully the lawn will repair itself as it greens up and starts to grow in April. I'd give up early spring greening if I didn't have to deal with half dead patches of grass until May. If my lawn was Rye or TTTF instead of creeping bentgrass, I would have had to reseed a ton of little circles everywhere. Thank god for the stolon spreading ability of bent. No winterizer for me this fall. I'd rather have brown dormant ALIVE grass than snow mold EVERYWHERE. I'm also putting down Daconil before the first snowfall to give me some extra help. I think winterizer is more for people who live south of the constant winter snow field. I think I read somewhere that it takes about 20-30 days to start snow mold growth, which we definitely get here EVERY winter.

Then jaryvinem, I'd give it a go. Eastern U.P. you have those two little small ponds to the north and the south of you to keep things cooler. And plus, because come fall fer cry eye, ya got other things to think about up there like deer camp! - not grass, LOL! Seriously, this is why putting your location into your profile and stating the location in the post is all so important. Not everyone lives in the standard recommendation for grass.
